Aerobie Skylighter Flying Disk review and giveaway

All summer long, we've had tons of fun tossing around our amazing Sprint flying ring -- but now fall is here, with shorter days and earlier dusk. The twilight hours haven't stopped my kids from playing outside, and now, thanks to Aerobie's new lighted flying disc, the Skylighter, playing outside in the evening is more fun than ever. Aerobie sent us a Skylighter to review and play with, and they're even providing one to give away! Keep reading to find out more...

The Basics

About the Skylighter: Extend the fun of playing with an Aerobie flying disc into the night with the new Skylighter lighted disc. Its bright LEDs illuminate the clear center and the translucent colored rim to make the entire Skylighter appear bright in the night sky. With the patented Aerobie spoiler rim design, the Skylighter is easy for players of all skill levels to throw well. Its narrow profile and large 12 inch (30cm) diameter make the Skylighter fly far and straight.

The Bongga

The Skylighter is a wonderful frisbee! It flies really nicely, even when the boys don't throw it perfectly.

The boys are really having some great, active afterschool fun tossing the Skylighter back and forth! They love the way it "floats" in the air.

But it's when you turn the LED light on that things get really special. The Skylighter has a little switch underneath that turns the LED light on (I like that you can turn it off when you're not using it so you save the battery).

It's so much fun to see the lighted-up Skylighter in the air! It looks great even in the daytime, but at dusk it really looks like a UFO!

The Blah
Compared to the Sprint, the Skylighter is bulkier and heavier, and doesn't fly as fast or far -- which is actually not such a bad thing, because it can't get lost as easily!

The Bottom Line
I can't put it any plainer than this:

Translation: The Aerobie Skylighter will light up playtime and put a smile on your child's face.

Willow Creek Sleeping Bag by Coleman

I finally got a chance to test out the sleeping bag that Coleman sent me a couple of months ago! I took their Willow Creek sleeping bag with me on the Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure, and The Pea used it when she invited her best friend over for a sleepover. Here's what we thought of it:

The Basics

The Coleman Willow Creek Scoop Sleeping Bag is great for warm-weather camping. It measures 33-Inch wide by 78-Inch long, and fits most people up to 5-Inch11-Inch. The unique scoop shape makes a comfortable headrest, keeping your head and pillow off the ground. The Willow Creek Sleeping Bag is durably constructed of a soft brushed-polyester cover and liner, with 3 pounds of ThermoTech insulation to keep you comfortable down to 40°-60Degree Fahrenheit. The Willow Creek features the QuickCord storage system for easy storage -- no tying required. Coleman-Inchs ComfortSmart technology means your sleeping bag is packed with features to keep you warm and comfortable: ZipPlow plows fabric away from the zipper to prevent snags; Comfort Cuff surrounds your face with softness; FiberLock prevents insulation from shifting keeping you warm and increasing durability; ThermoLock reduces heat loss through the zipper, keeping you warmer; Zipper Glide tailoring allows smooth zipper operation around corners; and Roll Control locks the bag in place for easier rolling.

The Bongga
This sleeping bag is a welcome addition to our arsenal of Coleman gear for some outdoor family fun! It served me well when I camped out in San Francisco last week, and The Pea's friend slept like a baby in it when they had their sleepover. Here's what I love best about this sleeping bag:

* It feels soft and cozy, like your favorite comforter.

* I love color scheme -- the brown and blue look so cute, and since they're a gender-neutral color, you can buy this for an older daughter, then pass it on to a younger brother a couple of years afterwards.

* It was unbelievably easy to pack! I didn't have to struggle at all; no sitting on the sleeping bag to make sure it stays rolled, or straining to get the cord all the way around so I can tie it. Usually I end up with a huge lumpy mess that looks like it's going to burst, but this sleeping bag packs up easily into a neat, compact roll. At the 3-Day for the Cure, we were limited to a single bag, including sleeping bag and sleeping mat, and this is the only adult-sized sleeping bag we have that actually fit into my duffel bag.

The Blah
This sleeping bag is supposed to fit adults up to 5'11'', but I'm 5 feet, 8 inches tall, and I found this sleeping bag to be just too short. Also, I'd revise the temperature rating to between 50 and 60 degrees Fahrenheit. When I used it in San Francisco, nighttime temperatures were in the low 50's, and dropped to 45, and even though I wore 4 layers of clothing, I was just too cold. I think it's much more suited to kids -- they can move around it in comfortably and the sleeping bag will still cover them well, and since kids don't feel the cold as much as adults do, they'll sleep well when the temperatures are in the 40's, and won't get too stifled when the temperatures are higher.

The Bottom Line
Coleman's Willow Creek Sleeping Bag is comfy, cozy, convenient -- just perfect for a girls' sleepover and kids' warm-weather camping!

We've got one more camping trip coming up in a couple of weeks, so stay tuned for a review of our new Coleman tent!

My Gym At Home Review and Giveaway

Did you know that May is National Fitness Month? With obesity levels among kids rising to alarming rates, there's no time like the present to start making good choices for our kids, not only with what they eat but also with what they do. With the days growing longer and the weather getting better, May is the perfect month to take your kids outside to play!

To celebrate, and to participate in the annual National Fitness Month awareness campaign, My Gym Fitness Center is holding a Family Fun & Fitness Day today, May 1, with fun activities, enrollment discounts and special offers at select My Gym locations (go to www.mygym.com to check events and schedules at your local My Gym).

My Gym has also launched a baby and toddler fitness DVD, My Gym At Home, for parents bring some of My Gym's fun programs and exercises home to do with their children at home. I was given a copy of the DVD to review, read below to see what I thought of it:

The Basics

Here's a description of the video from the distributors, Baby First TV:
Hosted by My Gym personality Monique Vranesh, My Gym At Home is a fitness title program aimed at children 3 and under featuring exercises designed to assist in the formation and development of children's motor skills, flexibility and social skills. My Gym's team of children's fitness professionals joined together with BabyFirstTV's educational experts to develop and produce My Gym At Home bringing young families fun My Gym exercises that parents can perform at home together with their babies and toddlers.

The Bongga

This isn't your typical Jane Fonda, leg-scissors exercise video. It's fun! The video is structured a bit like a typical My Gym class, with parents sitting in a circle, helping their kids do movements like arm circles and leg lifts and the like, set to kiddie music. My favorite part is the headstand class -- teacher Monique shows parents how to help their child (the kids in the video looked like they were about 15 months) do headstands! She gives tips on how to do it in a safe, controlled way (use your hands to support your child at the hips, no pressure on the neck). Babies and kids love going upside down, so it's a great exercise!

The Blah
This DVD seems to appeal more to parents than to the children. True, kids do like to look at photos and videos of other kids, and that might be enough to keep them interested, but some animation sequences of some animated characters doing exercises might be a nice change.

The Bottom Line
My Gym At Home brings all the fun of a typical My Gym class to your home. It has lots of ideas for parents who want to share some fun, active playtime with their young children, and it's a fun way to get babies and toddlers moving!
