Preserve and relive your memories with Photolane photo books (Giveaway)

Photolane photo book
I received a sample for review.

Some of the happiest moments of my life have been spent traveling with my family. Experiences, not things, make me happy, and I'm never happier when I'm exploring new places and enjoying new things with the people I love.  Things come and go, but memories last forever.... well, sort of.  The feelings of joy and happiness associated with those memories will always stay with me.   But the details?  Not so much.  Those memories last a whole lot longer when you have photos to help you relive them!

That's why I love creating photo books for each trip we take, and I love taking the photo books out from time to time, letting the photos spark the memories, helping us retell our adventures and our stories.

A few weeks ago, I discovered an easy new way to preserve and share stories: the Photolane app. Photolane lets you create a gorgeous photobook with your photos and video clips in just minutes. You can share the digital photobook online, and you can order a physical photobook, which has 32 pages and measure 8" square. For only $40 you get a hand crafted, one of a kind lay-flat book delivered straight to your front door, in just 5 days. Photolane invited me to create my own photobook and share my experience.

Photolane is an iPhone app (it's not yet available for Android, but that's coming soon).  Download the app on your phone or iPad, and you can use the photos on your device to create and edit as many photo books as you want.  I love that you can save your work and come back to it another time.
Photolane photo book

Select a theme and a set of photos from your phone, and Photolane will autopopulate your photo book for you. You can also select more photos from your phone if you want.  Photolane claims you can create a book in as little as 5 minutes, but honestly, it took me way more than 5 minutes.  Now that I've created my first book, I could probably create one in 10 or 20 minutes, but it took a while to check out the styles and the layouts, and to figure out how to drag pages around.
Photolane photo book

You can select from a variety of layouts for each page, including single page layouts, multiple page layouts, and 2-page photo spreads.  Some layouts have text, some don't. Everything is super simple and super easy to use.
Photolane photo book

You can switch around the order of the pages -- although to be honest, I found it really difficult to do so.  You touch and hold a page, then drag it to where you want it -- but more often than not, it ends up dropping in the wrong place because the pages scroll by so quickly.  You can avoid (or at least minimize) the frustration I went through by selecting the photos in the order in which you want them to appear in your photo book.
Photolane photo book

I forgot about all my frustrations as soon as I clicked "order".  The photo book arrived at my home in just a few days, and quality
Photolane photo book

The photo book came inside a cardboard sleeve with 4 photos printed on it (protecting the photo on the front of the book), and a cutout window revealing the photo book title. It's a special touch that I wasn't expecting, so it was a nice surprise!
Photolane photo book

I am so happy with how this photo book turned out! Photolane did a fantastic job.  The layout is minimal and ultra clean, so the focus is on the photos, not the embellishments.  The photos are printed out in beautiful color and detail, on heavy, high quality paper. The pages lay flat, so it's easy to flip through the book and relive all your memories.
Photolane photo book

The learning curve for using the app was a bit steeper than I expected, but now that I know how to use it, churning out gorgeous photo books is going to be so easy!  We've got a few trips scheduled this spring and summer, so I'm definitely keeping Photolane app on my phone...

Mosaic photo books: the easiest way to preserve your memories in print

Mosaic photo books
I've always been a big fan of Mosaic's lovely-to-look-at, easy-to-use, quick-to-arrive photo books. And as an Android smartphone user, I'm an even bigger fan now that the Mosaic app is available for Android!  Now it's easier than ever for me to create a beautiful photo book from the photos on my phone.  A Mosaic photo book costs just $20 plus shipping and handling, which is a great price for such a beautiful book.

You can literally create a Mosaic photo book in five minutes.  It will take you longer to select your photos than to create the book!  In fact, it might even take you longer to select your photos than it takes for Mosaic to print and ship your photo book!  Here's all you have to do:

Step 1: Choose your photos.  You can choose 20 photos from your camera roll, and you can choose the order in which they will appear in your photo book.
Mosaic photo books

Step 2: Choose whether you want your photos to appear on a white or a black background. You get 1 photo per page, no cropping, no zooming, no captions, so if you want to edit your photos at all, do it on your phone or tablet before loading them into Mosaic!
Mosaic photo books
Mosaic photo books

Step 3:  The first page of your Mosaic photo album is a randomly generated collage of 13 of the photos in your book.  If you don't like the photos that appear, you can reshuffle.
Mosaic photo books

Step 4: Place your order.  That's it!  You don't have to create an account, just give your name and address.  Your book will be printed in 48 hours and delivered in 4 days.  It arrives in stylish kraft paper box -- perfect for gift giving and for storage.
Mosaic photo books

I've made many Mosaic photo books from our past vacations, and they make wonderful conversation pieces when family and friends come over to visit.  No one ever has photo albums any more, so all our photos are hidden away on a hard drive or in the Cloud.  It's so nice to be able to show people something they can hold in their hand -- and since it's just 20 photos, you won't bore them to death.  Somehow, crowding around a computer screen is just not as fun as flipping through the pages of an actual book!
Mosaic photo books

Don't forget, today is Father's Day -- what better way to celebrate the dad in your life than with a Mosaic photo book or a Mosaic gift card so he can create his own photo book!

A Handy Dandy Guide to PhotoPass+ at the Disneyland Resort

Disneyland family photo

I'll admit it, I'm a photo person.  I love taking photos at events and vacations, and I love looking at them afterwards. I love bringing back all the memories, and I love seeing how we have grown and changed through the years.

The problem is, I'm not a great photographer, and I don't have the best equipment (I get tired of lugging our DSLR around, so I mostly rely on my smartphone!), so my photos don't end up looking all that great.  And as the family's official photographer, I never end up in any of the photos.

That's why I think Disney's PhotoPass service is so great.  You can get your photo taken by PhotoPass photographers all around the Disney parks, and they give you a PhotoPass card so you can claim your photos online.  You can edit your photo online and add cute Disney-themed borders.  You can purchase photo prints, photo gifts, and photo downloads of any, all, or none of your photos.  The photographers do a great job capturing your family at the most pictureque spots.  They can even do "magic shots" that superimpose Tinkerbell or a fun element like balloons into your shot!
Disneyland family photo

Individual photo downloads cost $14.95* each, so the cost can definitely add up. However, Disney offers a great package deal: the PhotoCD, which includes a CD or download of all the PhotoPass photos taken during your visit.  It costs $69.95.  An even better deal is Disney's PhotoPass+ ($69.95 when purchased 14 days in advance, $99.95 otherwise), which includes the following:

1) PhotoCD (or download) of all photos taken by PhotoPass photographers throughout the Disneyland Resort

2) Download of all attraction photos taken at:
California Screamin
Space Mountain
Splash Mountain
Radiator Springs Racers
The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror

3) Download of all dining photos taken at:
Goofy's Kitchen
Ariel's' Grotto
Disney's PCH Grill
Plaza Inn

4) Disney's Photo Gallery CD with other 350 hi-res photos taken around the Disneyland Resort

We used PhotoPass+ for the first time on our recent vacation at the Disneyland Resort, and I can't tell you how great it felt to get ALL of our photos -- and how happy I am with them.  It's a real treat to have such precious keepsakes from our vacation.  The PhotoPass+ photographers captured some beautiful photos of us!
Disneyland family photo

It was also great to be able to get all our ride photos.  Instead of taking a photo of the preview screen and getting photos that look like this:
Disneyland ride photo Tower of Terror

You'll get a high-res photo that looks like this:

We were able to get thirteen ride photos in less than 3 full days at the park!

How to order and use PhotoPass+

Order your PhotoPass+ package online, at least 14 days before your vacation ($69.95*). If you can't meet the 14-day  deadline, you can purchase PhotoPass+ for $99.95 at a PhotoPass Sales Center at the Disneyland Resort.

If you've purchased in advance, Disney will mail your PhotoPass+ package to your home.  It includes a PhotoPass+ voucher, PhotoCD voucher, and a Photo Gallery CD.  If you've purchased in advance, you can keep your PhotoCD voucher and Photo Gallery CD at home. You won't need those while you're on your Disneyland Resort vacation.  Take the PhotoPass+ voucher with you to the Disneyland Resort.
Disney PhotoPass

Once you arrive at the Disneyland Resort, take your PhotoPass+ voucher to a PhotoPass Sales Center and hand it to a Cast Member.  He or she will exchange your voucher for a special PhotoPass+ Card.  Ours came with a lanyard and a card listing all the attractions and dining experiences we could use the card at.  Keep this card safe.  They'll give you a receipt for the card so if you lose it, you can replace it, but you can only replace it once.
Disney PhotoPass

After you're done with an attraction that offers photos, go to the photo preview area and take note of your photo number.  Tell the Cast Member your photo number, and when he/she brings it up, verify that it's indeed your photo.  Give your PhotoPass+ Card to the Cast Member so he/she can scan it, and the photo.

Go online to disneyphotopass.com and create an online PhotoPass account (you can do this at night or after you get home from your vacation).

Enter the code on your PhotoPass+ Card to claim your photos and associate them with your account.  You can also enter the codes from any other PhotoPass cards you used while on your vacation.
Disney PhotoPass

Once you've claimed all your photos, you can edit them and add all kinds of cute Disney-themed borders.  Note, you cannot add Disney-themed borders to any attraction photos.
Disneyland family photo

Once you've edited to your heart's content, it's time to order your photos! Place a Disney's PhotoCD in your cart, and enter the code in your PhotoCD voucher into the Promotion Code field on the shopping cart page.  This will remove the cost of the PhotoCD.  Then complete the checkout process.  You can chose to have a CD mailed to your home, or you can choose to download the photos.  Make sure you do this within 30 days of having your first photo taken, otherwise they will expire from your account.

Is a PhotoPass+ Worth It?

There's no doubt that PhotoPass+ is a better deal versus purchasing each individual package separately. Here's what's included in the Disneyland Photopass:

Attractions+ package (unlimited attraction photos): $49.95
Photo CD (unlimited PhotoPass photos): $69.95
Disneyland Photo Gallery CD: $39.95
Disney PhotoPass

That's a total of $159.95.  PhotoPass+ costs $69.95 with 14-day advance purchase, $99.95 otherwise. It's simple math.  The real question is, do you really want everything that's included?

Now that is a tricky question, and it all depends on how much you value high quality vacation photos, with you, the photographer, in the shot.  Remember, the PhotoPass photographers are also happy to take group photos with your camera -- but they may not know the setting, and I'm betting your smartphone camera won't produce the same results as the photographer's nice equipment.

Let's look at this another way.  Individual photo downloads, whether it's an attraction photo or a photo taken by a PhotoPass photographer, cost $14.95.  If you think you'll only want one or two photos, I recommend purchasing them individually for $14.95 each.  But it only takes 5 photo downloads to break even on the $69.95 Photo CD, and if you're going to do the Photo CD, you might as well purchase the PhotoPass+ in advance for $69.95! You'll be getting the PhotoCD and Attraction+ packages, all for the same price as a PhotoCD!

Even if you don't purchase in advance and pay $99.95, it only takes 7 photos to break even.  I'm sure there will be way more than 7 photos you're going to want to keep -- especially if you've booked character dining experiences!

Two more factors to help you decide: the length of your vacation and how often you visit.  You may not want to buy a PhotoPass+ for a 1-day visit, but the longer you stay, the more photos you'll take. And if f you're not likely to visit the Disneyland Resort in another 3-5 years, I definitely recommend purchasing PhotoPass+.  Your kids will look completely different the next time you visit, and you'll want some great photos to capture all those memories.
Disneyland family photo

Tips for Making the Most out of  PhotoPass+

Purchase your PhotoPass+ online at least 14 days before you arrive at the Disneyland Resort.  You get a significant discount -- $69.95 when you purchase in advance, versus $99.95 when you purchase at the Disneyland Resort. The 14 day period is to give them time to mail you the PhotoPass+ voucher and PhotoCD voucher.  You don't need your PhotoCD voucher until after your vacation, but without the PhotoPass+ voucher, you won't able to get your PhotoPass+ card and you won't be able to take advantage of unlimited attraction photos or unlimited dining photos.

Once you redeem your PhotoPass+ voucher for a PhotoPass+ Card, you have 14 days to use it before it expires.

Take a photo of each PhotoPass card you collect.  That way, if you lose the card, you still have the code to load your photos into your PhotoPass account!
Disney PhotoPass

This may seem obvious, but it bears repeating: take as many photos as you want! PhotoPass photographers are happy to take multiple shots to make sure you're looking your best.  And sometimes ride photos don't come out the way you want (i.e. closed eyes, weird expressions, other people blocking your face, etc..).

If your party splits up while in the parks, the group that does not have the PhotoPass+ Card can still have their photos taken by PhotoPass photographers.  They can get a regular PhotoPass Card for the photos they have taken, and add those to your online PhotoPass account later.  HOWEVER, they will NOT be able to add any attraction photos.  Only the bearer of the PhotoPass+ Card will be able to get ride photos scanned in.

You have 30 days from the time you take your first PhotoPass photo to claim the photos and order any photo products, including photo gifts, prints, and downloads.  After 30 days, the photos will expire and you will not be able to get them back.  If you tend to procrastinate or can't make up your mind about what to order, you can purchase a 15-day extension for $19.99.

You can upload your own photos to your online PhotoPass account (from your computer or from Facebook) in order to add Disney-themed borders -- but the border styles are extremely limited, and you won't be able to download the enhanced photos. All you can do is order 4"x6" prints ($0.19) or sticker sheets ($9.95).
Disneyland PhotoPass

You don't have to wait for Disney to burn and mail you a PhotoCD with all your PhotoPass photos.  You can select the Download option when you check out, and your photos will be loaded onto a zip file (if you have lots of photos, they may split it up into multiple zip files) and placed in the "My Downloads" section of your online PhotoPass account.  Note that each file has an expiration date -- don't forget to download before the expiration date!

Giveaway: Check out the Tiny Prints 2013 Holiday Card Collection and win a $50 Tiny Prints card!

Even though it's Thanksgiving week, I'll bet that even as you're defrosting the turkey and cutting up veggies for the stuffing, you're thinking about the winter holidays.  Christmas, Hannukah, Kwanza and New Year's Eve are right around the corner!  Have you picked out your holiday cards yet?  Don't forget to stop by Tiny Prints before you decide on a design!  I've loved Tiny Prints' beautiful designs and superb quality cards for many years now, and this year's collection looks to be more gorgeous than ever.  Here are five of my favorite designs from the Tiny Prints 2013 Holiday Collection:

1) I can quite honestly say that Tiny Prints' Christmas Comic design is the most original holiday card I've seen this season!  It's bright and bold and perfect for the pop culture-loving family!
Tiny Prints holiday cards

2) Here's another novel idea: a clear card!  Tiny Prints' new plastic clear cards have beautiful transparent embellishments that let the light shine through (my favorite is Pure Snowflakes).  This is definitely a one-of-a-kind card (again, I haven't seen this anywhere else, just at Tiny Prints) that will take center stage in your friends' holiday card displays.

3) For 2013, Tiny Prints has more trim options than ever.   Many cards let you choose from square, rounded, bracket, ticket, or scallop, like the Vibrant Spirit design below. I'm a big sucker for photo cards with design overlays like the "Love & Cheer" message on the bottom hand corner.  It keeps the photo front and center, which is really what I want my friends and family to notice anyway!
Tiny Prints holiday cards

4) Tiny Prints' holiday card ornaments are always a favorite.  This Crystal Sequins design has bright, shiny snowflake prints on the back that glitter and sparkle, but there's no glitter on the card to fall and mess up the floor.  I still have dreams of decorating our Christmas tree entirely with Tiny Prints card ornaments!
Tiny Prints holiday cards

5) In the end, the best holiday card design is the one that's right for you -- and that's what makes Tiny Prints so great.  They have so many great designs, you're sure to find that perfect design! Their 2013 Holiday collection includes Contemporary, Classic, Vintage, Full bleed photos, All That Glitters, Bold Expressions, Simply Chic, Woodland Wonder & The New Tradition styles.  Despite all the great design innovations, my top choice is the Vintage Christmas design, because it complements my holiday photos perfectly.  This year, I took photos of the kids holding up chalkboard signs to spell out J-O-Y -- and what better way to frame the photos than with simple, striking black with beautiful white embellishments?
Tiny Prints holiday cards

For each holiday card design, Tiny Prints lets you order matching matching address labels and envelope liners, as well as photo stickers, notebooks, and other photo gifts in matching or complementary designs.

Aren't these gorgeous cards? Which card design would you choose?  Share your favorite, and you could win a $50 Tiny Prints gift card plus free shipping!

Mosaic photo books: the fastest, easiest way to create a photo book

With the advent of smart phones, it has gotten way too easy to take a photo!  Nowadays, I probably take more photos in a month than I did in a whole year, ten years ago.  Everyone I know has tons of photos on their phones, and for the most part, those photos end up taking permanent residence on that phone, so no one ever gets to admire them.

One great solution to get those photos off your phone and in front of admiring friends and family would be to create photo books from your favorite photos.  But I have to admit -- even with autocreate software, it takes me ages to create photo books because I'm always tweaking the layout, captions, background decor, photos, etc...  I know the software can do it all for me, but I'm such a control freak that I just have to meddle!

Sometimes it's nice to get all of those decisions out of the way, and that's just what the Mosaic photo app does.  Mosaic creates photo books out of 20 photos on your phone -- all you have to do is select the photos, and Mosaic does the rest.  Each 7x7 inch book costs a flat $20, with $4 shipping.  You don't even need to create a Mosaic account (thank goodness, that's one less password to remember).  Ours arrived in just 5 days, and it turned out gorgeous.

Seriously, the hardest part about creating a Mosaic book is selecting the photos that you want to appear.  You'll need to pick out 20 photos, no more, no less.  Just tap on the photo you want, and it will appear in the bottom bar.  You can change the order that your photos will appear by dragging and dropping.  When you're done, select "Next", and your Mosaic book is created.  That's it!

On the very first page, Mosaic showcases out a selection of your photos in a beautiful collage.  The selection and layout is random but if you don't like what appears you can reshuffle the photos and try your luck. Your 20 photos appear on pages 2 thru 21, one photo per page.

There's no zooming or cropping: Mosaic will print the photos on the pages in their original proportion (which means that if you want the largest possible photo, use square photos!).

Many people don't like the 20-photo restriction, but I actually don't mind it.  I worked around it by using a photo collage!

Pretty much the only thing users can do is select the photos, select the order of the photos, and select the background color (black or white).  No tweaking, so meddling.  It takes less than 5 minutes.

I do wish that users could add captions to the photos (I don't need fancy banners or stickers, just plain text would be great!), and I do wish that users could choose from two or three sizes (maybe 7x7, 12x12, 20x20?).   But I do get it: simplicity does have its trade-offs, and there is beauty in simplicity: you can't beat that clean, uncluttered look.   It takes so little effort and time, you just want to keep creating Mosaic books!
