Make the holidays brighter with Balsam Hill

There's no better way to get into the holiday spirit than to decorate your home for the holidays! A few weeks ago we were invited to the opening of Balsam Hill's holiday tree lot. Just like at our visit to Balsam Hill last year, we previewed Balsam Hill's amazing assortment of holiday trees and wreaths. Balsam Hill's premium greenery is so lush and thick, and their special molded plastic needles look so much like the real thing, why wouldn't you make the investment and get a Balsam Hill tree that will last for generations?

Balsam Hill doesn't just sell trees and wreaths; they also have swags and bows and ornaments and all kinds of seasonal decor. Everything you need to decorate your home for the holidays is available at Balsam Hill!  Jammy fell in love with the mama and baby polar bear figures that are so soft and silky, everyone will want to give them a cuddle. They're also so sturdy, an 11 year-old can sit on them!

Prizes were raffled off to event guests, and we won this beautiful German-made Santa Nutcracker. It is so well made, with intricate details like the berries on Santa's tree staff and the gift tag on Santa's burlap sack. We are thrilled to display this on our holiday mantel!

Balsam Hill designers were on hand to show off some of their creations and offer wreath decorating tips (speaking of tips, check out my recent post with wreath decorating tips for beginners).

The highlight of the evening was a wreath decorating contest where bloggers were given huge pre-lit wreaths to decorate. We were given access to a table full of ornaments, flowers, branches and bows, as well as crafting materials like florists wire, scissors and a glue gun, and forty-five minutes to put everything together.
Balsam Hill holiday trees and decor

The wreath decorating contest was so much fun!! Just like at last year's Balsam Hill event, I had two secret weapons: my assistant decorators, 3Po and Jammy. Sometimes having too many decorators in a wreath decorating contest is like having too many cooks in the kitchen, but we made an awesome team, and won FIRST PLACE!! All the other wreaths were amazing, so it was indeed a great thrill and honor to have all three judges (the Balsam Hill decorators) vote unanimously for our wreath.  The boys were over the moon!

Our prize for winning the contest was a Balsam Hill gift card, which we plan to use to buy a new holiday tree. Our current tree is not pre-lit, so we want a pre-lit tree to save us the hassle of stringing lights. Jammy really wants a pre-lit tree that has a remote to control the lights! Yes, Balsam Hill has trees where you can switch from clear lights to colored lights with the push of a button. How cool is that?

What with our new Nutcracker, our new award-winning wreath, our wreath from last year, and our new tree, our home is going to look amazing this holiday season! Thank you Balsam Hill for all the inspiration!

Check out more photos of the beautiful trees, wreaths, garlands, ornaments, and seasonal decor available at the Balsam Hill tree lot and at Balsamhill.com:

Holiday Decorating with Balsam Hill

Balsam Hill holiday party
You want your home to look gorgeous for the holidays, but unless you're Martha Stewart, it can be intimidating to decide on a great holiday look, and it can be even harder to make everything look as good as it does in your head.  Luckily for Bay Area folks, the Balsam Hill showroom is now open for the holidays!  Located in Millbrae, customers can gaze at dozens of beautiful Balsam Hill trees, all done up for the holidays, to get ideas and inspiration.

Last week, Balsam Hill invited me and a group of bloggers to attend the showroom opening.  Everything looked so beautiful -- their trees and wreaths and garlands are so lush and thick, and each one was decorated in its own unique style. Balsam Hill also sells decorations, so everything you need to decorate your home is right here.
Balsam Hill holiday party

The main event for the evening was a wreath decorating contest. Balsam Hill provided eight contestants with a beautiful Balsam Hill wreath, wire, scissors, glue gun, and glue.  We were allowed to pick anything we wanted from an assortment of leaves, berries, bows, ribbons, ornaments, and all kinds of beautiful things to decorate our wreaths. Just like the design challenges on the Food Network, we were given 30 minutes to decorate our wreaths, then each of us presented our wreaths to a team of judges, who decided on a winner.    It was so much fun!
Balsam Hill holiday party

I've never really decorated a wreath before (tying a red ribbon on a wreath does NOT count!), but luckily I love crafting.  Also, I had my secret weapon:  two awesome helpers, 3Po and Jammy.  We decided on a red and gold theme.  We scattered red holly berries around the wreath and added five golden flower accents, one for each member in the family.  3Po added five red robins to the wreath, also to represent each one of us -- he even put two robins together in the center to symbolize Alfie and me!  Jammy made a big gold ribbon in the center and glued a glittery Santa Claus ornament in the center of the bow. We worked right up to the last second, but we managed to finish... and it looked fantastic!  The boys were so proud of their creation and so pumped that they had participated in the kind of challenge that we love to watch on TV.

While waiting for the judges to decide on the winner, we were given a demonstration of Balsam Hill's amazing Flip Tree.  The Flip Tree is so easy to assemble -- just roll it to where you want it, flip it over, and attach the tree topper!  It's pre-lit, so you don't even have to worry about stringing lights.
Balsam Hill holiday party

Here I am with my friend Cam, posing with our wreaths.  Cam delegated the decorating of her wreath to her mother, and her wreath was so GORGEOUS that I was sure she would win first prize.  I was right!!
Balsam Hill holiday party

For winning the contest, she received  a beautiful Balsam Hill 7-foot holiday tree!  She is so lucky, because Balsam Hill holiday trees look just like real trees, without the fire hazard and the stress of having to water it and sweep up fallen needles.  The only thing you'll miss is the fresh pine smell -- but guess what, Balsam Hill sells scented ornaments ("scentsicles") will fill your home with a natural pine scent.
Balsam Hill holiday party

We're not at all bummed out that we didn't win (although Jammy whispered confidentially to me, "I'm SO proud of our work!!  Even though we didn't win, I think ours stood a pretty good chance!").  We had a great time.  I never realized what a fun family activity wreath decorating can be!  You can get individual wreaths for everyone and make it into a contest, or  you can all work together on one wreath.  If you use wire instead of hot glue to secure your decor to the wreath, you can dismantle it after the holidays are over, and reuse the wreath every year!  If you have a sturdy, high-quality wreath, like the Balsam Hill, you'll be able to enjoy it for many years to come.  Thanks, Balsam Hill, for introducing us to a new holiday tradition!

New Downy Wrinkle Releaser Plus: "Ironed" clothes, without the work

New Downy Wrinkle Releaser Plus
Even though I work part-time, I'm technically the stay-at-home parent, so most of the traditional "housewife" duties have fallen to me.  I cook, clean (sort of), do carpool duty, and do the laundry.  But the one thing I will NOT do is ironing.  Alfie is a stickler for perfectly ironed clothes, so he irons his own stuff.  As for the rest of us, I only iron out the worst wrinkles, so the kids and I go out in wrinkled clothing quite often.  I detest having to slave over a hot iron!

I've heard of wrinkle release sprays for quite some time now, but I've never actually used them until I got an offer from Downy to try out New Downy Wrinkler Releaser Plus.  Now that The Pea is a teenager, she cares a lot more about how her clothes look, and I get way too many requests to iron her clothes!  I figured it was time to see if New Downy Wrinkle Releaser Plus could actually save me a lot of work.

The Basics
When the kids are out of school and wreaking havoc on the house every day, what parent has time to get out the ironing board, wait for the iron to heat up and then iron an outfit in the morning? Finding time to shower and brush your teeth is hard enough. This summer when your linen, cotton and lightweight summery shorts and shirts are a wrinkly mess instead of ironing, you can simply spray the wrinkles away with the new Downy Wrinkle Releaser Plus. Spray it on clothes, give them a tug to loosen wrinkles and then smooth them flat. As your clothes dry the wrinkles will magically disappear.

The Bongga
WOW.  This stuff actually works!!!  Just spray, tug the fabric to stretch it a bit, and smooth it flat.  I tried New Downy Wrinkle Releaser Plus on linen, cotton, and stretch cotton (the fabrics that seem to wrinkle the most), and the results were great.   Check out how much better my fine cotton cardigan looks:
New Downy Wrinkle Releaser Plus

Here's close-up of another section of my cardigan.  As you can see, the wrinkles are pretty bad in the "Before" shot, but New Downy Wrinkle Releaser Plus took care of the worst.  Note, this is still not a perfect substitute for a hot iron.  You'll have to drench the fabric (see the wet spots in the "After" photo where I was a bit too trigger-happy?) to really get rid of the deepest wrinkles -- which means your clothes will smell like fabric freshener.  But it does make the difference between going out looking like a wrinkled mess, and looking presentable.
New Downy Wrinkle Releaser Plus

By the way, Downy Wrinkle Releaser is not just for clothes!  Here are some other uses:
  • remove creases from holiday ribbons
  • remove creases from tablecloths, cloth napkins, and drapes
  • remove odors from furniture, pet beds, and infant car seats
  • eliminate static cling from clothes

The Blah
I'm not a big fan of scented anything, so I wish they made an unscented version.

The Bottom Line
Downy Wrinkle Releaser has officially joined my list of laundry closet staples.  Finally, I can tell The Pea to "iron" her own clothes!  And I can remove the worst of the wrinkles in my own clothes, with minimal effort.

Dress up your sink with Softsoap's Decor Collection liquid hand soap line (and a Giveaway for you!)

I received sample products to review

When it comes to home decor, sometimes the smallest things can make the biggest impact.  Softsoap recently sent me samples of their new Decor Collection liquid hand soap line and challenged me to dress up my sink with them.  The Decor Collection line comes in three scents -- Peony & Plum, Orchid Petals & Mint Water, and Wild Basil & Lime. Each one smells heavenly, and each one is packaged in beautiful decorative bottles so you don't need to transfer the soap to another container.

I decided to use the new Softsoap Decor Collection to freshen up the look of our downstairs bathroom. Usually, the countertop is a mess.  The photo on the left shows the state of our bathroom on a good day -- a red floral display (that clashes with the bathroom's color scheme!) that I added one Christmas three or four years ago and never bothered to remove, ugly plastic liquid soap dispenser (because I can't be bothered to pour the liquid soap into a nicer looking container), two soap dishes (we never use solid soap anymore so I have no idea why they are on the countertop), nail files and other junk that the kids use and leave in their place.  This SoftSoap challenge couldn't have come at a better time!

The first thing I did was replace the red accent piece with a blue-green one.  Our sink is lined with decorative tiles that have a feather motif, so I put two peacock feathers in a small stem vase. Then, I cleaned up the random items on the countertop -- put the nail files and hair gel in a drawer, put the glass bowl back in the kitchen, got rid of the soap dishes. I also replaced the hand towel with a fresh one in a mint green color. I added a scented candle and a bottle of Softsoap Decor Collection, and in just five minutes our bathroom looked cleaner and prettier.

The Softsoap Decor Collection really does enhance our bathroom decor!  The bottle has a simple, clean look, and you can select which soap you use based whether you want the soap color (green, blue, or lavender) to blend or stand out with your bathroom's color scheme.  Of course, you can also select the soap based on which scent you love the most! My personal favorite is the Wild Basil and Lime, which smells heavenly and happens to blend really well with the green accents on our decorative tiles.  By the way,  I love how the shiny silver accents in the label and the pump top go so well with the chrome finish of our taps and towel bars.  If you must have items like lotions or creams on the countertop, just line them up for a nice, neat look.

To make your countertop look even more organized, you can place loose items in a basket.  This setup will look so nice for our guests the next time we have someone spend the night!

Softsoap's new Decor Collection liquid hand soap line is available at Target, Walmart, CVS, Rite Aid, and large Food stores for a suggested retail price of $2.49 for a 10 fl.oz. bottle.  It's amazing what a $2.49 bottle of soap can do to inspire you to beautify your bathroom sink!

Get organized with the new Home Collection by Post-it and Scotch

Scotch and Post-it Home Collection for organization

My kitchen is usually a big mess -- but the funny thing is, half of it isn't even related to food.  The kitchen is where I write, where I pay our bills, where the kids do their homework, where we all craft and draw.  So in addition to pots and pans, there are all kinds of papers and artwork strewn all over our kitchen.  There's not enough space on our fridge and message board, so I usually just stack them up and sweep them aside.

I've long wanted to utilize the insides of our kitchen cabinets to keep our papers, but we had new cabinet doors installed just a few years ago, and there's no way Alfie will allow me to screw in a clipboard or plastic organizer into the doors!  Hearing about Post-it's Home Collection was like drowning in the sea and being given a lifeboat -- finally, a way to organize our papers and display the kids' artwork that doesn't mar the cabinetry or walls!  The Home Collection is full of inexpensive solutions to clutter and mess, perfect for your New Year's Organization resolutions!

About the Home Collection
The collection, which is currently available at The Container Store, features a range of Post-it Products and Scotch Products and simple solutions to tackle everything from reminders to to-do lists, family schedules, meal planning, displaying children’s artwork and more. The collection pairs functionality with stylish design and soft hues, featuring products can be used individually or work together to create a unique and approachable organization system.
Scotch and Post-it Home Collection for organization

3M sent me a variety of Scotch Brand and Post-it Brand items from their Home Collection to help me get organized:
Scotch and Post-it Home Collection for organization

I love how everything can be removed, repositioned, and replaced so easily -- without peeling off the paint on our walls or cabinets!
Scotch and Post-it Home Collection for organization

My favorite items are the View and Go Pockets.  I stuck them on the inside of my kitchen cabinets, so I can keep all my loose papers -- school notices, field trip permission forms, coupons, etc... -- all in one handy place, without cluttering up our kitchen table.  The only thing missing from these pockets is an extra adhesive strip for the bottom of the pocket.  Only the top has an adhesive strip, so the pocket dangles (I took an extra adhesive square from one of the other products to secure the pockets!).
Scotch and Post-it Home Collection for organization

The Scotch Restickable Strips serve a similar function: you can press photos and paper onto them, and they will stick (they're wonderful for stainless steel fridges where you can't use magnets!).  Stuff sticks to them so well that you need to be very careful when peeling them off.  The strip is made of a gel-like material, so it will probably end up gathering dust in the areas not covered by paper -- but believe it or not, it's washable!  Just wash and dry, and the strip will be just as good as new.
Scotch and Post-it Home Collection for organization

The Restickable Designs are also a big hit.  They're great for hanging posters or happy birthday signs on the walls -- and the best part is, they're reusable!  Just rinse them in water and dry them off to "recharge" their sticky properties.  I have no doubt they'll peel off the walls cleanly but I still have my doubts about whether they will stick to the poster itself.  If it does feel like the poster is going to tear, I'll dampen the Restickable Dot and see what happens.
Scotch and Post-it Home Collection for organization

I think the Scotch Display Frames are a stroke of genius.  They have Scotch adhesive strips on the back, so you can put them anywhere.  They make your kids' artwork and photos look much more finished and elegant than just plain old magnets!
Scotch and Post-it Home Collection for organization

Other products in the Home Collection include (clockwise, from top left):
Scotch and Post-it Home Collection for organization

  • Post-it Full Adhesive Note Tiles
  • Post-it Reminder Tags
  • Post-it Shopping Books, Meal Planner and List Pad
  • Post-it Dry Erase Message Center
  • Post-it Notes with Hashtag Pattern
  • Post-it Dry Erase Planner and Message Center

Giveaway: Pledge FloorCare for hardwood floors

I participated in an Ambassador Program on behalf of Mom Central Consulting for Pledge. I received a product samples to facilitate my review and promotional item as a thank you for participating

Pledge is a brand that I have known and trusted since I was a little girl.  My mom polished all her wooden furniture with Pledge; I grew up with the scent of lemon around the household, and to this day, I associate it with well cared-for wood!

So when Mom Central Consulting invited me to join the Pledge-to-Pledge Challenge as a Pledge Ambassador, I was only too delighted.  I had just discovered Pledge's new product line for hardwood floors:  Pledge® FloorCare Wood Concentrated Cleaner, Pledge® FloorCare Wood Squirt & Mop,  Pledge® FloorCare Wood Trigger, and Pledge® FloorCare Wood Finish.    If any brand knows how to care for wood, it's Pledge!

I've been using these products for a couple of weeks now, and I'm extremely happy with them.  Check out the photo above -- you can really see the difference between our kitchen wood floors before and after using Pledge FloorCare products!  My favorite is the FloorCare Squirt & Mop, because it's so easy to use.  I also love the FloorCare Wood Trigger, because it cleans up spills and messes in a jiffy.  Last week my son 3Po had food poisoning: he woke up in the middle of the night and threw up all over the floor!   Fortunately, their bedroom (along with 95% of our home) has hardwood floors, so I was able to clean everything up with a bit of water, some towels, and Pledge FloorCare Wood Trigger and Squirt & Mop.

Air Wick introduces the National Parks Collection of fragrances

Air Wick
I participated in a campaign on behalf of Mom Central Consulting for Air Wick. I received product samples to facilitate my review and a promotional item as a thank you for participating.

I never considered myself an outdoorsy, nature-type person... until I visited Yosemite National Park for the first time.  For the first time in my life, I was surrounded by beauty everywhere I turned.  The scenery made me want to run, dance, hike till I dropped, snap a million photos, and just sit and drink in all of nature's beauty.  Yosemite is truly one of my favorite places on earth, and I'm so grateful to the National Park Service for working so hard to keep Yosemite the way it was (or as close as it can be) and has been throughout history.

I know I'm not the only person in the world inspired by Yosemite National Park and all the other amazing national parks across America.  For national park lovers who want to keep their memories of their time in the parks fresh, Air Wick® has come out with a limited edition set of fragrances: the National Park Collection. These are fragrances inspired by six popular national parks, each one representing the unique flowers and scents in each park.  They are perfect for people who want to keep the memories of their national parks visit fresh!

(before I go on, how cool is the photo above?  The Pea created it for me!  She digitally superimposed a photo I took of some Air Wick products I received for review, with photos of her favorite national parks like Yosemite and the Grand Canyon.  It just goes to show you how inspiring those national parks can be!)

About the National Parks Collection
America’s national parks are a source of inspiration to all of us. That’s why Air Wick® is proud to partner with the National Park Foundation in an effort to preserve and protect the very essence behind our new expertly crafted National Park Collection of fragrances.

The National Parks limited edition collection was crafted by fragrance experts who spend countless hours creating the perfect harmony of fragrance notes representative of the natural elements found in these national parks and pays homage to the brand’s “The Craft of Fragrance” creative platform. This collection brings a sensory park experience into the home.

The Air Wick National Parks Collection is available in scented oils, scented candles, reed diffusers, and a freshmatic spray.  There are six fragrances, each inspired by the unique flora and elements of six popular parks:  the Grand Canyon National Park, American Samoa National Park, Honokohau National Historic Park in Hawaii, Denali National Park, the Gulf Islands and Virgin Islands National Park.  I had the opportunity to sample the first four scents in scented oils, and the American Samoa fragrance in a scented candle.  They are all wonderful fragrances that are great to have in any room.  I love having them in our guest bathroom or in our entryway!

Here's a list of all the fragrances with a brief note about how the parks inspired them, along with my own thoughts:

o Grand Canyon: Be awestruck by the breathtaking majesty of Grand Canyon National Park and discover the subtle floral notes of delicate cactus blossoms carried in the warm summer breeze.

It's difficult to put into words just how Grand the Grand Canyon is, when describing it to someone who has never been there before.  I like how Air Wick didn't even try to capture grandeur and majesty in their Grand Canyon fragrance, and instead went the other way, being inspired by the small cactus flower rather than the gigantic canyon.  The fragrance is delicate and sweet and a great reminder to appreciate the small details, not just the big picture.

o American Samoa: Explore the lush paradise of American Samoa National Park to experience the sweet refreshing notes of native coconut and island palms.

I had the opportunity to sample this fragrance in both the scented oil version and scented candle version.  It's very very sweet, and you can definitely detect the coconut fragrance -- which reminds me of tall coconut trees and coconut fronds rustling in the breeze... definitely an island paradise.

o Hawai’i: Escape to a tropical island sunset at Honokohau National Historical Park and savor the
unspoiled notes of exotic papaya and hibiscus flower.

When I inhale this fragrance, the mix of floral and papaya scents send my mind traveling back to the first time I visited Hawaii.  As Alfie and I entered our hotel lobby, an attendant offered us the most delicious drink -- an orange, guava, pineapple and papaya blend that set the tone for a wonderful vacation.

o Denali: Seek renewal in the sun-drenched valleys of Denali National Park to breathe in the clean notes of pure cotton grass and fresh spring air.

I think Denali is my favorite fragrance in the collection.  It smells so crisp and fresh!  I've never been to Alaska (that's on my bucket list) but I can definitely understand the inspiration; when I close my eyes and inhale, I think of the cold mountain air up in the Tahoe National Forest.

o Gulf Islands: Bask in the fragrant scents that take you to the Gulf Islands, rich in white sand beaches and seashores that evoke sun-drenched sweet notes of a summertime paradise.

I wasn't able to sample this fragrance, nor have I been to the Gulf Islands, but I've been to some pretty beaches, and I would love to be able to escape to white sand and blue surf just by lighting an Air Wick scented candle!

Virgin Islands: Find yourself in the idyllic paradise of Virgin Islands National Park and uncover the delightful notes of tropical plumeria and sweet honeysuckle.

I was not able to sample this fragrance, but I grew up among tropical flowers like plumeria (Filipinos call it kalachuchi), hibiscus (pictured above) and honeysuckle, so if the Virgin Islands scent has those notes I'm sure I would love it.  It would remind me of home!
