Holiday Card Checklist -- what to do to ensure the perfect family holiday card

Adoramapix

The holidays are coming, the holidays are coming! It's time to start planning your annual holiday cards! Here's a checklist of things to do in the next 3 weeks or so:

  1. If you haven't had your family holiday photos taken, now is the time. Book a photographer or set up a tripod and do it on your own.
  2. Go through last year's card list. Make sure all mailing addresses are current. Don't forget to add all the new friends you've made in the last year!
  3. Family newsletter: yes or no? Some people love 'em, some hate 'em, but if you're on the love side it's time to start thinking about what you want to include.
  4. Buy holiday stamps at the post office before the rush begins
  5. Print out holiday address labels or order personalized ones online.
  6. Last but not least, choose your holiday card designs!

Speaking of holiday card designs, check out AdoramaPix's  AdoramaPix's holiday collection. Choose from a wide range of stunning designs and paper options. Then, upload your photo and customize any holiday card with your own personal touches. Holiday snail mail has never looked so good!

Add More Pixie Dust to your DisneySide Party with HP and MyPrintly

DisneySide party invitations with HP photo paper

One of the easiest ways to save money when throwing a party is to make some or all of your own decorations.  You can make wall posters, banners, bunting, signs, and so much more, with just some paper, pens, and paint.  If you don't consider yourself the artistic type, then substitute pens and paint for a good printer!  The internet is teeming with great ideas and images to print out.

One of the most useful things that I received in my DisneySide At Home Celebration box was a set photo paper cards from HP.  I used them to print out invitations and thank you cards for the party.  The theme of my DisneySide party was Paintball Mickey (because my son celebrated his 11th birthday with a paintball party), so I found an image of Mickey, an image of a paintball gun (from Disney Infinity), and some images of paint blobs.  I combined them with a photo of the kids in their paintball gear for a cute and memorable thank you card.  I also have a more generic Mickey Paintball invitation and thank you card image at the bottom of this post -- feel free to download and use for your own Mickey Paintball party!
Mickey Paintball party thank you cards

We held the party at our local paintball field.  The place had a picnic area with first-come-first-served picnic tables, so I decided to make a birthday sign to mark our spot.  Artist Simon Phipps generously allowed me to use his adorable Mickey Paintball artwork for the sign.  I added a few more paint splotches and a Happy Birthday sign, then printed out two copies.  I pasted both printouts onto a sheet of stiff cardboard, then attached it to a wooden stick.

I stuck the sign into a glass jar filled with plastic beads in order to make it stand up.  I also added a few smaller Mickey Mouse Clubhouse signs to make the display more festive.  Everyone thought it looked cool, and all our guests had no problem finding our party table!  Thank you so much Simon for letting me use your artwork!  (Please note, the Mickey Paintball artwork belongs to Simon Phipps and cannot be used without his permission!).

Below are the Mickey Paintball invitations and thank you cards that I designed.  They should be printed on 4x6 photo paper.  Feel free to download and print (if you do blog about them, please mention me and link to this post!). To see what other great things you can do with photo paper, go to MyPrintly, HP's new site for printing projects and ideas.  Enjoy!

Holiday Card Trends for 2014 featuring Minted

This holiday season I noticed a few "trends" in the holiday cards that we received from family and friends:

Holiday photo cards are more popular than ever
About 75% of all the cards we received had photos on them!  I'm so happy this continues to be the case because I love looking at photos.

Lots of cards were from Minted
I always look at the backs of the cards to see the up and coming companies. I was pleasantly surprised to see so many people used Minted cards!  We used Minted cards this year, and ours turned out spectacular!  I've already received many compliments on our cards.

More and more people are including newsletters
Again, I love this trend because the majority of my family and friends don't live near me, so I don't get to catch up as often as I want, so I always enjoy reading end-of-year summaries and finding out what people are up to. Many people print out their newsletters on separate sheets of paper, but I prefer shorter summaries printed out on the card itself.  One of the reasons I like Minted so much is that you can customize your card and add so many different kinds of text and photo layouts.

People are sending cards later and later
We received quite a few cards on December 26!  I can't complain, because I sent out my cards quite late, and I'm sure a few of mine will arrive between Christmas and New Year.  The holiday season is already so busy, I don't hold it against anyone for taking more time to get holiday cards out.  Besides, there's always Happy New Year cards!  Or Chinese New Year cards!  Are you planning on sending New Years cards?  Today's Mama is having a giveaway for $50 towards personalized holiday cards at Minted!

Disclosure: I received a gift card from Minted so I could review their 2014 holiday card line. The views and opinions expressed here are my own.

Find the perfect holiday photo card at Minted

holiday photo cards from Minted
We've reached a milestone in our holiday planning:  our photo for the annual holiday greeting card has been chosen!  This year we've decided to feature our visit to Stonehenge in the summer, because it showcases our love for traveling and our love for Stonehenge and its timelessness, much like our love for each other.  Also, we all look good in this photo!

Now, how do we showcase this photo in a way that will make our family and friends proud to display this on their holiday mantels, in the same proud way that we display theirs?  Why, go online to Minted, of course!  Their 2014 holiday card collection features hundreds of exclusive designs from indie designers all over the world in a variety of styles. Classic, modern, vintage, whimsical, bold, you name it.

I've been a fan of Minted and their premium cards for years.  I love how you can upload a single photo and see what it would look like on each and every card design in Minted's online portfolio.

You can customize your name and message on the front and inside of your card, using Minted's easy-to-use online tools.

They even have square cards and round cards!

There are so many beautiful designs, I'm still not sure which one we'll choose.... but I'll be making my decision soon!  Stay tuned to see which one makes the final cut, and what the actual cards, look like!  Knowing Minted's reputation for quality, they will be exquisite.  I can't wait!

Get 20% off your order at Night Owl Paper Goods

Night Owl Paper Goods

I've blogged about Night Owl Paper Goods before; out of all the online stationery stores, they are quite unique in that their medium of choice is wood, not paper.  I'm not talking about chunky tablets; their personalized cards and journals and other stationery products are made of the thinnest sheets of wood, giving them the thickness and weight of stiff cardboard, but with a texture and feel that is beyond compare. Their designs are as unique as their medium: whimsical, rustic, modern, and folksy all at the same time.

Naturally, this kind of quality does not come at a bargain basement price; you get what you pay for.  But I have two pieces of good news for those wondering whether they can afford Night Owl Paper Goods' adorable cards this holiday season:  first, their holiday designs are also available in cardstock!  That's right, you get to choose between wooden cards and paper cards (which are less expensive and quite reasonably priced).  Second, they are having a fantastic Early Bird Special: use code SHINE2014 and get 20% off all Personalized Holiday Cards PLUS free domestic shipping on all orders $49+ until October 31!

Night Owl Paper Goods' 2014 holiday collection has larger size standard cards, more ornament shapes and more back designs than ever before. Here are the deets:
Night Owl Paper Goods

  • Choose from 200 modern-yet-folksy designs, custom-printed on sustainably-harvested birch wood. All designs also available on budget-friendly FSC certified paper.
  • Quick and easy personalization! Simply add your own greeting, photo, photos or logo and let our professional graphic designers do the rest.
  • 12 unique back options: 2015 Calendar, Photo, Text, Festive Patterns, Faux Walnut, Postcard & more
  • One-of-a-kind ornament cards: Gingerbread, Angel, Reindeer, Otters, Birds, Dove, Bulb & Scalloped Round
  • Envelopes contain 30-100% recycled post-consumer waste.
  • All Night Owl Paper Goods products are handmade in the USA.
Here are some of my favorites:

Night Owl is known for their forest creatures.  I love their otters and their deer, but I can't resist these holiday hedgehogs:
Night Owl Paper Goods
It's a card.... it's an ornament.... it's a keepsake.... it's a one-of-a-kind!
Night Owl Paper Goods
Many designs can be personalized with your favorite photos..... (love that tree icon!)
... and you can personalize the back of the card with a message, your choice of patterns, a photo, or a 2015 calendar!

Put the Cool in School with Mabel's Labels

We've only been back to school for two weeks, and already our school's lost-and-found closet is overflowing!  Despite all our threats and warnings, kids will inevitably leave stuff behind, or leave them in the wrong bins, or pick up someone else's stuff, so labeling everything is essential.  I've been a big fan of Mabel's Labels for years because they're so durable and colorful, with fun designs that my kids love.

This school year, Mabel's Labels has come up with some new designs, not just for kids, but for kids at heart. Their new Stylish Scholar Combo swaps the kiddie graphics for subtle, stylish background patterns (think stripes, chevron, plaid, and floral) and muted colors, so even sophisticated middle schoolers and high schoolers can label their stuff without worrying about looking too juvenile.  I received a Stylish Scholar Combo set to review, and it has already been put to good use for my 5th graders and my 8th grader!

The Stylish Scholar Combo includes:

• 40 Skinny-Minis™ -- great for attaching to anything and everything, including lunch boxes, pencil cases, water bottles, books, binders, boxes, bins, rulers, scissors, tape dispensers, calculators, phones, cameras, chargers, sports equipment, instrument cases... basically anything and everything that can get lost, left behind, or confused with someone else's property! These sturdy labels are dishwasher and microwave safe.

• 50 Tag Mates™ -- great for attaching to clothing care labels or any items made with fabric (they are washer and dryer safe), including clothes (these stick best on clothing labels!) hats, visors, cloth sandwich bags, pencil pouches, and more.

• 16 Round Labels -- great for labeling shoes and other items made with fabric, including hats, visors, cloth sandwich bags, pencil pouches, and more. These labels are waterproof and UV resistant.

• 2 Teeny Tags™ -- Great for labeling anything where regular labels might not stick, as long as they have a hook or hole or somewhere to attach to, such as backpacks, lunch boxes, instrument cases, duffel bags, sports bags, and more. These tags are waterproof and UV resistant.

At $42, they're a great way to send your kids (and their stuff) Back to Cool.

Simply to Impress Graduation Cards

This is a sponsored post

The schoolyear seemed endless last August, but now that we're  less than 2 months away from summer, the time seems to have flown by!  It hardly seems possible, but school is almost over and my kids are moving up a grade.  For those with kids graduating from grade school, middle school, high school, and college, the end of the school year has even more significance.  I still have a year until my boys graduate from grade school and my girl graduates from middle school, and I'm already teary-eyed just thinking about it.
,
There's no better way to commemorate your child's graduation than with a party, a special dinner, or even just a graduation card sent to family and friends to proudly announce your child's achievement.  To that end, Simply to Impress has a beautiful line of graduation announcements and graduation invitations.   This online stationery company is impressive by name and impressive by nature!  They sent me a sample box of graduation cards and invitations to examine, and each one is exquisite.

Simply to Impress has dozens of designs to choose from, ranging from traditional and classic invitations to more modern, whimsical designs, in a variety of sizes, including square.  You can add photos of your graduate and you can customize the wording of your announcement or invitation.  You can choose from four finishes: glossy, matte, linen, or fashion pearl. Some designs have fancy edges and borders.  You can even customize the back of your card!  They have a variety of colors and patterns, or you can add photos or text to the back of the card.

Your order arrives in a beautiful box that is perfect for storing the graduation announcements and invitations of all your child's friends.  The cards are printed onto heavyweight cardstock; you can really see and feel the quality.

What's even more impressive than the quality of their cards is the quality of their service.  Every order is personally examined -- and I know this because I ordered holiday cards from Simply to Impress last December.  I was emailed by a Simply to Impress customer service representative who informed me that my photo resolution was too low.  She then worked with me to change my photos and layout and make my card even more gorgeous!  I was so happy with the quality when they arrived -- but that wasn't enough for Simply to Impress.  I received a second box of cards shortly after my first box arrived, because they discovered there had been a quality issue with the printing.  I certainly couldn't see anything wrong with my cards, but Simply to Impress sent me a replacement order, for free.  I can honestly say I have never received this level of service from ANY stationery company.

A graduation is a special event, and it deserves to be celebrated in a special way.  Make sure you honor your child's achievement and shout it out proudly to the world with Simply to Impress!

Be impressed with photo holiday cards from SimplyToImpress

If you haven't ordered your holiday photo cards yet, TODAY IS THE DAY -- and SimplyToImpress.com is the place!  They have a great Cyber Monday deal offering 20% off plus free shipping with promo code BESTDEAL2013.  And if you have any doubt whatsoever that you're not getting the best deal, just check out how the cards I ordered from them turned out:

THEY ARE GORGEOUS!  I'm so happy with them!  The cardstock was nice and thick, and the layout and printing were exquisite.  It's no accident these cards turned out so nicely:  a few days after I placed my order, SimplyToImpress emailed me with a proof of my cards, and suggested that I change one of the photos because the resolution was too low and it might not print out as nicely as they would like.  They also offered the option to change all the photos in the layout, so I completely redid the photo layout -- and it turned out to be far nicer than my original design!  I really appreciate all the effort they went through, because I ended up with a beautiful holiday card that I'm proud to send to my friends and family.

What's more, soon after I received my cards, I received a second box of cards, exactly like the first.  I was completely puzzled because I hadn't ordered more -- until I read the note inside.  A few customers had seen white spots on their cards, and they traced it to a malfunctioning printer.  Rather than just replace the cards for those customers, SimplyToImpress decided to replace cards for all the customers whose cards had been printed in that batch!  They wanted to make absolutely sure that all their customers were satisfied.  I am sooo impressed with SimplyToImpress -- their designs, their quality, and most of all, their customer service.  I truly believe that if there's anything at all about your cards that doesn't meet your expectations, they will work round the clock to fix it!  Great job, SimplyToImpress!

Giveaway: Check out the Tiny Prints 2013 Holiday Card Collection and win a $50 Tiny Prints card!

Even though it's Thanksgiving week, I'll bet that even as you're defrosting the turkey and cutting up veggies for the stuffing, you're thinking about the winter holidays.  Christmas, Hannukah, Kwanza and New Year's Eve are right around the corner!  Have you picked out your holiday cards yet?  Don't forget to stop by Tiny Prints before you decide on a design!  I've loved Tiny Prints' beautiful designs and superb quality cards for many years now, and this year's collection looks to be more gorgeous than ever.  Here are five of my favorite designs from the Tiny Prints 2013 Holiday Collection:

1) I can quite honestly say that Tiny Prints' Christmas Comic design is the most original holiday card I've seen this season!  It's bright and bold and perfect for the pop culture-loving family!
Tiny Prints holiday cards

2) Here's another novel idea: a clear card!  Tiny Prints' new plastic clear cards have beautiful transparent embellishments that let the light shine through (my favorite is Pure Snowflakes).  This is definitely a one-of-a-kind card (again, I haven't seen this anywhere else, just at Tiny Prints) that will take center stage in your friends' holiday card displays.

3) For 2013, Tiny Prints has more trim options than ever.   Many cards let you choose from square, rounded, bracket, ticket, or scallop, like the Vibrant Spirit design below. I'm a big sucker for photo cards with design overlays like the "Love & Cheer" message on the bottom hand corner.  It keeps the photo front and center, which is really what I want my friends and family to notice anyway!
Tiny Prints holiday cards

4) Tiny Prints' holiday card ornaments are always a favorite.  This Crystal Sequins design has bright, shiny snowflake prints on the back that glitter and sparkle, but there's no glitter on the card to fall and mess up the floor.  I still have dreams of decorating our Christmas tree entirely with Tiny Prints card ornaments!
Tiny Prints holiday cards

5) In the end, the best holiday card design is the one that's right for you -- and that's what makes Tiny Prints so great.  They have so many great designs, you're sure to find that perfect design! Their 2013 Holiday collection includes Contemporary, Classic, Vintage, Full bleed photos, All That Glitters, Bold Expressions, Simply Chic, Woodland Wonder & The New Tradition styles.  Despite all the great design innovations, my top choice is the Vintage Christmas design, because it complements my holiday photos perfectly.  This year, I took photos of the kids holding up chalkboard signs to spell out J-O-Y -- and what better way to frame the photos than with simple, striking black with beautiful white embellishments?
Tiny Prints holiday cards

For each holiday card design, Tiny Prints lets you order matching matching address labels and envelope liners, as well as photo stickers, notebooks, and other photo gifts in matching or complementary designs.

Aren't these gorgeous cards? Which card design would you choose?  Share your favorite, and you could win a $50 Tiny Prints gift card plus free shipping!
