Give the gift of color this holiday season: Color Blind Glasses

Color Blind Glasses by Vino Optics

Alfie is the most color blind person I know. He was told that he has pretty much the highest degree of color blindness there is. Forget mistaking green for red. He also frequently mistakes pink for brown, and blue or lavender for pink. When we watch soccer, he often can't tell the difference between the two teams playing because they're both wearing dark colors and we're viewing the players from a distance. It's difficult to comprehend exactly what his world looks like, but the closest I've come to understanding it is his explanation: Go to your tv and turn the controls for color way down, just a few steps above black and white. Yikes.

When I first heard about color blind glasses that help color blind people see colors, I was so excited, but Alfie was skeptic. He felt that he was so color blind that he would probably be one of the few people for which the glasses wouldn't work. Also, how could we ever tell that he was seeing the colors that you and I see? Finally, wouldn't they cost thousands of dollars?

Lucky for us, I got the chance to review Color Blind Glasses by Vino Optics for O2Amp. They're available on Amazon for $304, which is significant but not outrageous... if they work. So, did they? I'm happy to report a big, colorful YES!!  Alfie put the glasses on and passed the Ishihara color blindness test with flying colors (pun intended). Glasses off, he couldn't distinguish a single number. Glasses on, he saw them all.

So, what's it like when a color blind person puts on these glasses? When Alfie puts the glasses on, he says amplifies the intensity of everything he sees, even the colors he can identify. He says that objects almost glow neon (or what he identifies as neon, anyway!).
Color Blind Glasses by Vino Optics

How about when a non-color blind person puts on the glasses? The glasses are tinted pink, so when my kids and I put the glasses on, everything turns pinkish. Interestingly, Alfie doesn't notice the pink tinge! We also notice that color intensity increases, but not as dramatically as it does for Alfie. He's really fascinated by how well he can distinguish colors!
Color Blind Glasses by Vino Optics

Alfie's final word? He's still a bit of a skeptic -- he says that we still don't know whether we're seeing the same colors..... but then again, who is to say that any two people see exactly the same colors! Also, these are not glasses that Alfie would wear every day. He already has prescription glasses, so he can't wear both at the same time. Also, these glasses have a distinct style, with a wraparound athletic look that would suit road bikers, but probably wouldn't look good when you are wearing a tuxedo at the opera (unless you're Bono).  They are definitely something every color blind person should get. Whether they wear it all the time is up to them. Anyway, Alfie looks forward to seeing the Grand Canyon wearing these glasses!

About the glasses

Looking for “outside of the box” holiday gift ideas to share with your audience? Consider the Color Blind Glasses by Vino Optics for O2Amp. These glasses are a remarkable gift to give to the loved-one in your life who is color blind. Giving the gift of color is a once-in-a-lifetime gift!

For the remarkable 8 percent of men and .5 percent of women with Northern European ancestry who have the most common form of red-green color blindness, they no longer need to let their vision impairment hold them back in life or career. The Color Blind Glasses by Vino Optics for O2Amp further enhance color vision signals, thus aiding those with color blindness to see proper color, perhaps for the first time.

American Girl Holiday Accessories for Dolls

Holiday Accessories for Dolls (shrug)

Yesterday I reviewed one of the American Girl 2015 holiday items: the Joyful Jewels dress. But what is a holiday outfit without accessories? The American Girl Holiday Accessories for Dolls set has everything a doll wants to complete her holiday celebrations. I received a sample of the accessories set to review, and I agree, it's the perfect complement to the Joyful Jewels dress. If you're getting your daughter/niece/goddaughter/granddaughter the Joyful Jewels dress, make sure you get this accessory set to go along with it!

Holiday Accessories for Dolls (complete set)
The full set includes:

  • A velveteen shrug to add a bit of warmth to any fancy dress
  • A ring to add a glimmer to the festivities
  • A glitter globe that makes a great gift for a special friend; it has loose glitter and a little tree inside (no liquid)
  • Pretend striped glossy ribbon candy
  • A candy box
  • A pink gift bag covered in foil snowflakes
  • A sheet of red tissue paper

Here's a close up of the gift items. The ribbon candy is so pretty, and so is the snow globe. Proportion-wise, I'm not sure the two items work well together (compare the size of the globe next to the size of the ribbon candy; if that globe were the size of a child's palm, that candy would be huge!!), but I love the level of detail in both of them.
Holiday Accessories for Dolls (partial set)

Here's a close up of the ring. It fits on American Girl dolls' pinkie fingers or index fingers. The ring's size is adjustable, but take care because it can easily fall off a doll's finger.
Holiday Accessories for Dolls (ring)

How I wish this were available in real-person size! Who wouldn't want to see this under their Christmas tree with their name on it?! Right now, the Holiday Accessories for Dolls set is on sale for $22 (originally $32) so it's a great deal.

American Girl Playful Polar Bear pajamas

Playful Polar Bear PJs and Cozy Christmas Scene

The holidays have arrived at American Girl, and there are gift ideas galore for every girls big and little, and budgets big and little! Right now all their regularly-priced merchandise is on sale at 20% off until December 12, so don't delay, get those presents for your American Girl today! The sale is good at Americangirl.com, the American Girl catalog, and the American Girl stores.

I'm really loving the Playful Polar Bear PJ set that American Girl sent me to review! The set (modeled below by McKenna) features a red long-sleeved tunic top with a polar bear graphic and polar bear print pajama leggings. Also included are knit red bootie slippers with white faux fur trim and red rubber bands so you can keep her hair in pigtails or braids. This set is so festive and it looks just like something a little girl would wear.
Playful Polar Bear PJs and Cozy Christmas Scene

The Cozy Christmas Scene is the perfect backdrop for photographing McKenna in her PJs (or any holiday scene for that matter!). I just couldn't resist purchasing it (especially with that 20% discount), and I'm so glad I did. It really looks as though McKenna is relaxing with her polar bear friend and his holiday present (neither are included in the pajama set nor the backdrop, BTW) in her beautifully-decorated home. At just $12, the Cozy Christmas Scene makes a great inexpensive present. I'd say it would make a great stocking stuffer, but it's too big to fit into a stocking!

American Girl Joyful Jewels Dress for Dolls

American Girl holidays 2015

When I first saw American Girl's 2015 holiday doll outfit collection, I was immediately drawn to the Joyful Jewels outfit. There is just something so fun and festive about a red party dress; whenever I see it, it puts me into a holiday mood!

Joyful Jewels Outfit

When I received a sample of the Joyful Jewels Outfit to review, I got to see the beautiful detail and fell in love with it even more. The dress has a red velvet bodice with a neckline adorned with gems, sequins, and a taffeta overlay. The skirt is red tafetta and tulle, with a taffeta bow. This dress is sugar and spice and everything nice, but it's also fire and sass and a whole lot of class.

Note that the black shrug is not included in the outfit; it is included in the Holiday Accessories set (review coming soon!).

The outfit also comes with shiny black t-strap shoes and a red headband. Just look at the detail on the jeweled headband!

You can also get the matching girls' dress so your American Girl and her doll can match! Make the holidays brighter with Balsam Hill

There's no better way to get into the holiday spirit than to decorate your home for the holidays! A few weeks ago we were invited to the opening of Balsam Hill's holiday tree lot. Just like at our visit to Balsam Hill last year, we previewed Balsam Hill's amazing assortment of holiday trees and wreaths. Balsam Hill's premium greenery is so lush and thick, and their special molded plastic needles look so much like the real thing, why wouldn't you make the investment and get a Balsam Hill tree that will last for generations?
Balsam Hill holiday trees and decor

Balsam Hill doesn't just sell trees and wreaths; they also have swags and bows and ornaments and all kinds of seasonal decor. Everything you need to decorate your home for the holidays is available at Balsam Hill!  Jammy fell in love with the mama and baby polar bear figures that are so soft and silky, everyone will want to give them a cuddle. They're also so sturdy, an 11 year-old can sit on them!
Balsam Hill holiday trees and decor

Prizes were raffled off to event guests, and we won this beautiful German-made Santa Nutcracker. It is so well made, with intricate details like the berries on Santa's tree staff and the gift tag on Santa's burlap sack. We are thrilled to display this on our holiday mantel!
Balsam Hill holiday trees and decor

Balsam Hill designers were on hand to show off some of their creations and offer wreath decorating tips (speaking of tips, check out my recent post with wreath decorating tips for beginners).
Balsam Hill holiday trees and decor

The highlight of the evening was a wreath decorating contest where bloggers were given huge pre-lit wreaths to decorate. We were given access to a table full of ornaments, flowers, branches and bows, as well as crafting materials like florists wire, scissors and a glue gun, and forty-five minutes to put everything together.
Balsam Hill holiday trees and decor

The wreath decorating contest was so much fun!! Just like at last year's Balsam Hill event, I had two secret weapons: my assistant decorators, 3Po and Jammy. Sometimes having too many decorators in a wreath decorating contest is like having too many cooks in the kitchen, but we made an awesome team, and won FIRST PLACE!! All the other wreaths were amazing, so it was indeed a great thrill and honor to have all three judges (the Balsam Hill decorators) vote unanimously for our wreath.  The boys were over the moon!
Balsam Hill holiday trees and decor

Our prize for winning the contest was a Balsam Hill gift card, which we plan to use to buy a new holiday tree. Our current tree is not pre-lit, so we want a pre-lit tree to save us the hassle of stringing lights. Jammy really wants a pre-lit tree that has a remote to control the lights! Yes, Balsam Hill has trees where you can switch from clear lights to colored lights with the push of a button. How cool is that?

What with our new Nutcracker, our new award-winning wreath, our wreath from last year, and our new tree, our home is going to look amazing this holiday season! Thank you Balsam Hill for all the inspiration!

Check out more photos of the beautiful trees, wreaths, garlands, ornaments, and seasonal decor available at the Balsam Hill tree lot and at Balsamhill.com:

5 Reasons Renting Toys can make more sense than Buying New Toys

Pley toy rental service

One of the best things about the holidays is seeing my kids' faces light up with joy when they receive that toy they've been longing for as a present. One of the worst things about the holidays is realizing that I have to make room for a ton of new toys. Not only do we have 3 kids, but 2 of them have birthdays on December 30, so our house fills up with Christmas AND birthday presents!  And once the novelty wears off, half of the toys end up abandoned and forgotten.

The concept of renting versus buying has been around for a long time, but in the age of e-commerce, it has been showing up in many more industries besides homes, cars, and furniture. Consumers can now rent clothes, shoes, bags, even video games! So why not rent toys as well? That's the idea behind Pley, a toy rental service that lets members receive unlimited toys (one at a time) delivered directly to their door. Plans start as low as $19.99/month and all plans include free delivery and unlimited rentals.

Pley toy rental service

Renting toys can make so much more sense versus buying them. Here are five great reasons to rent toys instead of buy new toys:

1) Reduces cost
Buying new toys costs money. Renting them costs less.

2) Reduces clutter
When you own a lot of toys, you need space to store them all. With Pley, you send back toys once your child is done playing with them to make room for a new rental toy, so there are less toys to store.

3) Reduces waste
New toys always come with a lot of packaging. Also, there's bound to be a toy or two or ten that your child ends disliking, so it ends up gathering dust in the back of the closet.

4) Lets kids try a variety of toys
When you rent toys, your child can try any new toy he or she wants, without having to fork over the money for a new one. If your child doesn't like the toy, it's not a big deal, just return the toy!

5) Keeps kids interested
Done with that puzzle? Return it and get a new one!  Kids never have to get bored with their toys because they can always get a new one. They can look forward to a new toy whenever they're done with their current toy.

Check out Pley on the web and on Facebook. A Pley membership could be the best present your child receives this holiday season!

Celebrate the Holidays at the Disneyland Resort

Holidays at the Disneyland Resort

The last time my family celebrated the holidays at the Disneyland Resort was quite a while ago, but it is one of those memories you cherish forever. Holidays at the Disneyland Resort are really special, because Disney really goes out of their way to create special holiday traditions and memories for all their park guests. From special decorations to special food to special entertainment and special attractions, Disney sprinkles everything with pixie dust and holiday magic!

In Disneyland:

  • “A Christmas Fantasy” parade, a Disneyland holiday treasure, presents Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse and an array of Disney characters celebrating the holiday season. The daytime parade features 100-plus performers including Santa Claus, who brings jolly holiday wishes from the North Pole.
Disneyland Christmas Fantasy Parade
  • After dark, the Diamond Celebration “Paint the Night” parade will bring its own brand of glittering magic to Disneyland, with dazzling special effects, unforgettable music, energetic performances, Disney characters and spectacular floats. The luminescent parade creates a river of color flowing down Main Street, U.S.A., with more than 1.5 million brilliant LED lights.
  • “Disneyland Forever,” the dazzling, new fireworks spectacular, is a street-to-sky, immersive experience like nothing seen before at the Disneyland Resort, with pyrotechnics, original music and viewing locations throughout Disneyland Park. Guests will be surrounded by the worlds of timeless Disney tales, from the tips of their toes to the sky high above, thanks to the largest installation of projection mapping technology in a Disney park and surprising special effects.
  • “it’s a small world” Holiday offers a worldwide celebration of the season, with more than 60,000 twinkling LED lights on the attraction’s façade. Inside, animated dolls representing children of many nations are dressed in holiday attire, singing holiday songs as well as the classic “It’s a Small World After All.”
It's a Small World
  • Haunted Mansion Holiday presents a spooky but lighthearted mashup of the Halloween and Christmas holidays as imagined by Jack Skellington from the Walt Disney Pictures animated classic Tim Burton’s “The Nightmare Before Christmas.” Continuing an annual tradition, a new gingerbread house is created each year for the Mansion, adding a humorous touch to the ballroom scene. This year, the gingerbread house design features gingerbread zombies constructing a teetering “house of cards.”
Haunted Mansion Holiday
  • Jingle Cruise, an instantly popular addition in 2014, returns to take adventurous guests on a fun-filled expedition. They discover a cargo of holiday gifts and decorations that have been jettisoned over the jungles of the celebrated Jungle Cruise attraction in Adventureland. This year, a few new surprises have been dropped into the Cruise’s African veldt scene.
  • This year Santa Claus brings holiday cheer to Disneyland guests in a new location in Critter Country, specially designed for him by Winnie the Pooh and his friends.

In Disney California Adventure:

  • For the first time, two splendid versions of the “World of Color” spectacular will be presented nightly during the Holiday season on Paradise Bay. The holiday-themed show, “World of Color − Winter Dreams,” features host Olaf the snowman along with classic winter scenes from beloved Disney and Disney●Pixar films such as “Bambi,” “Toy Story” and “Frozen,” the blockbuster Disney film. For the Disneyland Resort Diamond Celebration, “World of Color – Celebrate” pays a fun, surprise-filled tribute to Walt Disney, whose imagination led to the creation of Disneyland and so many beloved characters. “World of Color – Winter Dreams” is the first show of the evening, followed by “World of Color – Celebrate!”
  • “Disney ¡Viva Navidad!” is a daily celebration of Latino culture and holiday traditions with music, dancing, vibrant colors and delicious food. Disney characters join the fun in the lively “Disney ¡Viva Navidad! Street Party,” presented multiple times a day.
  • “Olaf’s Snow Fest” celebrates its return to Hollywood Land with Olaf, the comical snowman from “Frozen.” Stage 17 is transformed into a charming castle courtyard inspired by the “Frozen” kingdom of Arendelle. Kids of all ages have fun in a giant wintry play area with real snow where they are encouraged to build snow creations and zip down a snow slide. Guests who wish to observe the icy fun will have a nearby viewing area. Music and storytelling entertainment will be presented throughout the day
  • The residents of Radiator Springs will welcome guests with a “Snowcar” at the entrance of Cars Land, and each address along Route 66 – Flo’s V8 Café, Fillmore’s Taste-In, Cozy Cone Motel and more – will feature holiday decorations reflecting the personalities of the “Cars” character who lives there.
Cars Land Entrance Sign
  • Flik and his buddies decorate “a bug’s land” with giant Christmas lights and holiday ornaments, adding to the festive spirit.
A Bugs Life
  • Early in the new year, the Disneyland Resort celebrates Three Kings Day (Dia de los Reyes) in Paradise Garden. The event runs from Jan. 2 through 6, 2015, with fun activities that create a grand finale for “Disney ¡Viva Navidad!”

At Downtown Disney

  • In the Downtown Disney District, guests may take a break from holiday shopping and dining to go skating on “Olaf’s Frozen Ice Rink.”
  • The Downtown Disney Winter Village around the ice rink creates a festive mood and guests may purchase holiday gift items from the windows of the charming village chalets.
