28 reasons to walk

Growing up in the Philippines, I never walked anywhere if I could help it. With all the heat and pollution, I rode in cars any time I could. Since moving to California, I've come to love spending time in the outdoors, but I still drive around way too much (living in the suburbs doesn't help!). So LinkI'm really quite proud of myself for sticking to the Walkabout Challenge that I began with Orthaheel and Weil Integrative Footwear 3 weeks ago. 49 other Walkabout Ambassadors and I were challenged to walk every day for 28 days (4 weeks), and amazingly, I've been walking every single day! It hasn't been easy, but I've managed to walk every day for 30 minutes or more. Most of the times those walks have been short jaunts around the neighborhood -- picking the kids up from school, or making a quick trip to the drugstore. Normally I'd drive, but this month I used my feet instead of my car. Those little trips have added up, and I've been enjoying the benefits already. Here are 28 reasons I'm enjoying my daily walks, 28 reasons I'm resolving to continue my walking habit even after the Challenge ends -- and 28 reasons you should incorporate more walking into your life:

I'm saving gas money
I'm reducing wear and tear on my car
I'm reducing my carbon footprint
I don't have to worry about finding parking
I'm saving parking money
I'm increasing my life expectancy
I'm strengthening my heart
I'm reducing my risk of cancer
I'm lowering my blood pressure
I'm keeping my bones strong
I'm doing a low-impact form of exercise
I'm maintaining my weight
I feel better about giving myself a treat now and then
I'm firming up my glutes
I'm shaping up my calves
I'm working my hamstrings
I sleep better at night
It's a great excuse to buy cute exercise wear
It's a great excuse to buy cute new walking shoes
It's a great excuse to hold my husband's hand
I'm spending more time outdoors
I'm enjoying the beautiful spring flowers
I feel more in tune with nature
It's a better way of relieving stress than a pint of ice cream
It's a way to force me to get away from the computer
I love the natural high I get when my body releases endorphins
I'm setting a great example for my kids
I feel good knowing I'm doing my body and mind so much good!

Disclosure: As an ambassador for the 28-day Walkabout Challenge for Orthaheel USA and Weil Integrative Footwear, I received a package containing a pair of Dr. Weil footwear and other promotional items. I will not be receiving any other form of compensation for my participation. Don't forget to check out what the 49 other Walkabout Ambassadors are doing! The views and opinions expressed here are my own.

Reviewing the Crest & Oral-B Pro-Health Clinical Line

Going to the dentist is always a treat for me. My dentist and I joke about how it's like going to a spa, because I get an hour of KID-FREE TIME to lie down, close my eyes and have a professional work her magic on me to make me healthier and prettier. As an added bonus, I go home with toothpaste and floss samples, a fresh and squeaky-clean feeling in my mouth, and a renewed determination to keep my mouth healthy. If I had my way, I'd visit the dentist every month!

Of course, it's a different case when you actually have to go. A couple of weeks ago I wrote about how I used to go to the dentist four times a year because my gums were, shall we say, in less than perfect health. No matter how much I enjoy my spa dental visits, my goal was to decrease the frequency and get to a point where my gums didn't need to be checked so often! Thanks to a vigilant oral care routine, I've finally gotten to that point -- and thanks to a new oral care line, I might even get to enjoy that squeaky-clean after-dentist-visit feeling even though I haven't been to the dentist in a while!

I'm talking about the Crest and Oral-B Pro-Health Clinical Line -- consisting of Crest® Pro-Health® Clinical Plaque Control Toothpaste, Crest® Pro-Health® Clinical Rinse, Oral-B® Pro-Health ® Clinical Pro-Flex Toothbrush and Oral-B® Glide ™ Pro-Health ® Clinical Protection Floss. Mom Central Consulting sent me these products to review, and I've been using them daily for several weeks now as part of their Crest and Oral-B Pro-Health Clinical Plaque Control Test Drive campaign. I think these products are great, and I'd definitely buy them again!

Here's some info about the products (in italics), along with what I think about them (in normal text):
Introducing the Pro-Health Clinical Line from Crest & Oral-B. When used together, these products not only significantly reduce plaque, they also help keep it from coming back.

Crest Pro-Health Clinical Plaque Control Toothpaste
Crest Pro-Health Clinical Plaque Control toothpaste not only gets rid of plaque, it’s also clinically proven to help keep plaque from coming back, so you can have a clean, healthy mouth at home. Crest’s plaque control toothpaste formula protects against plaque, gingivitis, cavities and tooth sensitivity, while also whitening teeth and freshening breath.

I love this toothpaste! It tastes great, and it has some kind of "crystals" in the toothpaste that give it a crunchy, gritty feeling for the first minute or so of brushing. It feels just like the toothpaste that they use on my mouth in the dentist's office! This toothpaste really leaves my mouth with a clean, minty feeling.

My one concern with this toothpaste was that the label says the stannous flouride used may produce surface staining of the teeth. But after doing some research, I was reassured to know that staining which can be avoided by proper brushing, and it isn't permanent. Moreover, Crest's particular formula is stain-resistant. Also, I read that stannous fluoride has been shown to be more effective than sodium flouride (which seems to be the more common, and less expensive, flouride ingredient in toothpastes) in reducing the incidence of cavities and gingivitis. So it's all good -- and now that my concerns are allayed, I will definitely be buying this toothpaste in the future.

Crest Pro-Health Clinical Rinse
Our most advanced rinse ever, Crest Pro-Health Clinical Rinse, helps you maintain your dental cleaning with clinical strength plaque and gingivitis protection. It is clinically proven to reduce plaque and help prevent plaque regrowth, and clinically proven to help prevent and reverse gingivitis in as little as 2 weeks. It also kills 99% of germs to improve breath.

When I first used it, I thought the rinse had a funny taste, but once you rinse and spit, the aftertaste is wonderful! It leaves your mouth feeling minty and tingly-fresh. That feeling is far more intense and long-lasting than any other mouthwash I've tried! Even better, you don't feel as though your mouth is burning while you're swishing the stuff around your mouth.

I must admit a moment of concern when I read the label and saw "hydrogen peroxide" on the list of ingredients. What? I'm putting bleach in my mouth? But a quick trip to the ADA website reassured me that hydrogen peroxide is indeed commonly used as a bleaching agent in over-the-counter oral care products, and the FDA has approved 3% solutions of hydrogen peroxide for use as a mouthwash. I'm on the fence about using it daily on a long-term basis, though, since I've also read that overuse may actually damage cells and soften tooth surfaces.

Oral-B Pro-Health Clinical Pro-Flex Toothbrush
This is the first and only toothbrush with individual Pro-Flex sides that adjust to the unique contours of your teeth and gums. As a result, it removes more plaque than a regular manual toothbrush. Because of its flexibility, Clinical Pro-Flex delivers an outstanding, gentle clean.

On my dentist's recommendation, I use a sonic toothbrush, but I would definitely use the Oral-B Pro-Health Clinical Pro-Flex Toothbrush occasionally, like when I go on trips and need a travel toothbrush. I like the soft, flexible bristles and flexible head.

Oral-B Glide Pro-Health Clinical Protection Floss
Oral-B Glide Pro-Health Clinical Protection Floss is our most advanced plaque control floss ever. It helps reverse gingivitis in 2 weeks as part of a comprehensive dental health routine.

My dentist recommends woven dental floss, and I really love the way it doesn't cut into my gums the way string or flat waxed floss can do -- but it can be very difficult to find. After trying Oral-B Glide Pro-Health Clinical Protection Floss, I've decided it's going to be my second-in-line floss. It's not as soft as woven floss, but it's still quite gentle on the gums, and it does glide in between my teeth very nicely. And like the Crest Pro-Health Clinical Rinse, this floss doesn't just have a nice minty taste, it actually leaves a minty tingle in your mouth after you're done!

All in all, I think these products work nicely together, and they definitely leave my mouth with a clean, healthy feeling. How much of that "feeling" actually translates into less plaque, only my dentist knows. I'm not scheduled to visit her for another 4 months, but with the Pro-Health Clinical line, I can go through those 4 months feeling a lot better and more confident about my teeth and gums.

Celebrating Easter with Bobble Bots Moshi Monsters

MomSelect's MommyParties division has been very kind to 3Po and Jammy and their friends in recent years; we have had the fortune of hosting a Hexbug Nano party in the fall of 2010, as well as a second Hexbug party last October, and my twins and their friends have all been thrilled with those little robotic bugs that scurry along a customizable track. This week it was The Pea's turn to have some fun with her friends, because MommyParties sent us a Bobble Bots Moshi Monsters Bash Kit so we could host our very own party.

FYI, Bobble Bots are a lot like Hexbugs (in fact, they're made by the creators of HexBugs!) -- they are tiny collectible robots that move around by vibrating. They're based on the Moshi Monsters characters that are wildy popular with kids in the UK. Instead of plastic tracks, Bobble Bots Moshi Monsters travel around playsets that look like the houses, buildings, yards and streets of Monstro City. Kids can snap the playsets together in any configuration they want, so the Moshi Monsters Bobble Bots can wander in and out of the Gross-ery Store, Ice Scream Store, Moshi Monster House and more.

The kids were so excited when a huge box arrived from Moshi Monsters Bobble Bots! It was packed with fun stuff for the party like Bobble Bots Moshi Monsters Moshlings (the little vibrating robots), Starter Sets (small interlocking playsets) and Stores (larger interlocking playsets), as well as ideas for activities, food and games.

There was 1 Moshling for each guest to take home, but the guests had to work a little bit to earn them! I removed each Moshling from its packaging and placed it in a plastic Easter Egg, then hid the eggs around our back yard. When all the girls arrived, we had a little Easter Egg hunt, and they got to keep the Moshling they found in their egg. Each Moshling is super-cute, so after a bit of bartering and trading, everyone ended up with a Moshling they loved.

The girls were quite content to spend all their time playing, but I managed to squeeze in a short game from the party activities suggestion sheet: Monstro City Races. It was super easy: I had everyone build Monstro City by snapping together all the sets and stores that came in the party box. Then each girl put their Moshling on one end of the City and turned them on. The Moshlings vibrated around, and the Moshling that got to the other end of Monstro City first was the winner!

For a yummy snack, we made Moshi Munch well, the popcorn part of it, anyway)! Here's the recipe:

1 bag mini pretzels
1 bag green (or color of your choice) candy melts
1 jar green (or color of your choice) nonpareils
1 jar popcorn kernels

1) Pop popcorn as directed on package, set aside in medium bowl.
2) Melt candy melts as directed on the package.
3) Dip one end of pretzels into melted candy melts and sprinkle with nonpareils.
4) Place pretzels on wax paper in the freezer to cool for 5-10 minutes.
5) Drizzle left over candy melts over the popcorn and mix together with a rubber spatula until popcorn is coated.
6) Serve popcorn and pretzel mix in individual cups or paper cones.

Of course, no party of ours would be complete without cupcakes, and since these Bobble Bots Moshi Monsters are so small, only the teeniest cupcakes would do.

Everyone had a great time, and all the guests loved their Bobble Bots Moshi Monsters, as I knew they would. And because The Pea did such a great job of hosting the party (and because she just celebrated her 11th birthday!), I treated her to a few more Bobble Bots Moshi Monsters in her Easter basket. Thanks, MommyParties and MomSelect, for introducing us to such a fun new toy!

My kids really like drinking the leftover milk from their cereal bowls because by the time they're done eating their cereal, the milk has already been flavored with the bits of fruit and flavoring that were in the cereal. With these collectable, connectable Curvy Straws, children of all ages can enjoy mixing and matching to build bigger, colorful straws all while helping them work towards stronger bones and muscles through increased calcium intake!

Shutterfly Photo Gifts

Now that Easter has come and gone, it's time to look forward to the next big holiday... Mother's Day. Mother's Day is a big one for me, since it falls in May, which also happens to be my birth month. My family knows that the entire month of May is basically devoted to ME -- after all, I spend the other 11 months of the year catering to their every need, so for this month at least, I'm going to put myself first. May is the month I make time to schedule haircuts, manicures, and bikini waxes. May is when I schedule my dentist and doctor visits. It's when I buy flowers to make our home look pretty. If I can only run 1 race per year, it would always be the Bay to Breakers race, held on the 3rd weekend in May. It's when I don't feel any guilt whatsoever about going to movies by myself or to lunch with friends.

I always tell my family that they don't need to spend a lot of money on presents for me, and it's true. All that present money comes out of the same bank account anyway, and as most moms know, getting time for themselves is one of the best presents ever. Still, it's always nice when they surprise me with something thoughtful that says they want to make me feel special. I love anything personalized, but oftentimes personalized presents are either way too expensive (mom jewelry!) or too tacky (photo mugs!). So it's nice to see affordable, stylish options like the photo gifts from Shutterfly. I trust their good taste -- hey, they bought my favorite card company Tiny Prints! What other evidence do I need of their good taste! -- and if their gorgeous photo books (of which I have many) are anything to go by, their photo gifts will be tasteful and just right for any occasion, be it Mother's Day or Father's Day or graduation.

Here are two of my favorite Shutterfly photo gifts:

I'm sick and tired of filling out those flimsy paper luggage tags at the airport, so these custom luggage tags are the perfect present as we head into the summer travel season. Not only will your contact information be right where the lost-luggage people can see it, but the personalized design will help you identify your bags quickly and get away from the luggage carousel before everyone else.

These Personalized iPhone cases are so adorable! My phone case is boring black, and I really want it to be pretty and girly like the case above. Please, please, please, Shutterfly, can we get these for Android phones?

Two presents, two occasions (Mother's Day and my birthday), just perfect!

Disclaimer: I will be receiving a Tiny Prints gift card courtesy of Tiny Prints as a thank-you for writing this post. Tiny Prints provides simple, modern and unique stationery, from personalized greeting cards to custome wedding invitations to custom photo gifts and more. For more information about Tiny Prints, follow Tiny Prints on Twitter, like them on Facebook, or follow them on Pinterest. The views and opinions expressed here are my own.

Start the Party! Save the World Review

The PS3 has been part of our household for about 6 months now -- but I'll have to admit, despite the wide range of games available, my main PS3 testers have been my kids. So far, the one game I've really enjoyed is Everybody Dance -- but with the introduction of Start the Party! Save the World, I've found another game I can play again and again!

Start the Party! Save the World
launched last month on the PlayStation Network, and we've been enjoying it ever since. Not just my kids, but the whole family! Because it utilizes the PlayStation Move system instead of the incredibly-complicated-at-least-to-people-over-age-35 Dualshock controller, anyone can figure out how to play it. The games aren't role-playing games that require hours and hours of play; they are pretty short and simple games, so they're ideal for parties.

About Start the Party! Save the World
Your PlayStation®Move motion controller is about to turn into some of the craziest gadgets imaginable in Start the Party!™ Save the World on the PlayStation®3 system. From the depths of the ocean to skyscraper rooftops, Dr. Terrible is wreaking havoc - pick up your motion controller and battle with this devious enemy. - Grab your PlayStation®Move motion controller and prepare to battle Dr. Terrible in a series of hilarious mini-games. - See yourself on-screen as you use your motion controller to scoop up fish, swat flies and rescue lost divers. - Challenge up to three friends on PS3, take down an evil villain and save the world in four different game modes.

You can play Start the Party! Save the World in solo mode or party mode (up to 4 people). Whichever mode you choose, you'll be playing one of 20 mini-games, or a randomized combination of them.

This is one of my favorite games -- Speedy Shootout -- because it's so easy, even I was able to figure it out and get a kickass high score. All you have to do is aim (by moving the motion controller wand) and fire (by pressing the trigger) at a bunch of helicopters trying to drop bombs on you. The other games are similarly easy -- building robots, torching fireflies, keeping asteroids away from astronauts, all that fun stuff.

Whether you play by yourself or with a group, you'll need to choose a character -- but it's not just any avatar. The Playstation Eye camera will take a photo of your face and put it one of four cartoon bodies! It even records you saying your name, so every time your turn comes up, you'll hear your name said in a cute cartoony voice.

See the thermometer at the far right? That's a visual representation of your score. It even shows you how high your opponents scored, so you know how much better or worse you are doing, which gives you a great incentive to step up your game.

This game makes great use of the Playstation Eye camera throughout the game. It records your image constantly, so you might see yourselves in the background.....

... or right in the middle of the action! We first discovered augmented reality at the PS Vita event we attended in February, and we were blown away by its coolness, so it's great to see it appearing in other PlayStation games.

One little featurette I absolutely love is seeing the other players become part of the game. Sometimes they become the characters being rescued, other times they just wander in and out of the screen as the game is being played. It makes things a lot more interesting for people who aren't taking a turn at the moment because they get to see their characters involved in the game.
From time to time, the game also lets observers influence the outcome of the game by using the Dualshock controller to control the side characters. See the orange icon appearing beside the bug? That means someone can use the Dualshock controller to move the bug around -- either towards or away from the game player's torch (he's supposed to burn the bugs away). It adds a really interesting dimension since you can either help the player out or make it more difficult for him.

The game awards points based on how you did: 1st place gets 5 points, 2nd gets 3, 3rd gets 2 and 4th gets 1. At the end of each round, the points are totaled and current standings are shown. At the end of 3 rounds, the final winner is crowned!

I'd love to see is the ability to post photos of our characters, or snapshots taken during the game, to a social media channel, such as Facebook or Pinterest or Flickr -- but right now I can't even figure out a way to save these characters for another game, let alone share them. Right now, we have to take photos and set up the characters every time we play. If anyone knows how to do this, please share -- these photos are way too adorable too keep to ourselves!

Giveaway Alert -- watch out for a giveaway of Start the Party! Save the World, coming out tomorrow on Bonggamom Finds!!

Disclosure:PlayStation provided me with a download code to review the game, and a second code for a giveaway. Product information is provided by the featured company/product and is indicated in italics. The views and opinions expressed here are my own.

Toydozer Review and Giveaway

As parents, we are constantly looking for products to make our lives easier, more productive and more fun. Sometimes we run across a product that is so simple in its concept, yet so brilliantly useful, that you kick yourself for not thinking of it yourself. You know, like sliced bread. Or Facebook.

Here's another one: the Toydozer. How many times have I yelled at my kids to clean up their toys, then ended up doing it myself because they took too long, or weren't doing it properly? How many times have a missed a piece or two, only to step on it an hour or two later? The Toydozer bulldozes away all those problems . Read the product description and see if you don't wholeheartedly agree:

What if toy clean up could be a fun activity instead of a dreaded chore? Enter the Toydozer. This innovative new product makes clean up time fun, fast, and efficient for both parents and kids. With a few simple scoops, you can clean up huge amounts of toys at one time and easily dump them back into their storage bins. No more crawling all over the floor in search of every stray small piece. With a few swipes of the Toydozer, clean up time is over in no time.

The Toydozer is available exclusively on the Toydozer.com website and comes in three vibrant colors: purple, yellow and blue. The product retails for $18.99 and ships for free anywhere in Canada or the U.S.

The Toydozer acts like a brush and dustpan, but instead of a brush that catches dirt and hair and dust bunnies, you use a sturdy plastic scoop. You don't have to pick anything up, just swipe the scoop and guide all those little toys into the pan. It's such a simple idea, but it's brilliant.

The website says it can be used on "Lego®, Duplo®, Polly Pocket®, Squinkies®, Matchbox® Cars, blocks, trains, safari animals, puzzle pieces-whatever’s all over the floor" -- and it's true. So far, we've used it to clean Lego, Knex and markers. Why not just pick the markers up? Because using the Toydozer is more fun! In fact, 3Po and Jammy have actually turned cleaning up with the Toydozer into part of their play. They like to pretend all their Lego pieces are part of a junkyard, and they use the scoop like a bulldozer and shovel everything into the pan:

They even thought of providing velcro tabs, so you can attach the scoop to the pan and keep them together! One thing that would make the Toydozer even better would be a hanging hole or hook, so you can hang it on a wall for storage (there is a hole on the back "wall" of the pan so kids can grip it properly, but you can't really use it to hang the Toydozer).

Photo Card Creations Giveaway

I have always loved the beautiful designs at Photo Card Creations, but one of the items in my "Blah" section was not being able to see your card as you were ordering it online. Previously, Photo Card Creations customers had to wait 1-2 days to receive a proof of their orders. It's nice to know that a professional is actually proofing your cards, but in this age of instant gratification, having an online design tool is always better.

Now I'm happy to announce that Photo Card Creations online design tool has arrived! Not customers can view, customize and approve their cards online. They will be able to choose from one of hundreds of designs, upload photos, zoom, reposition and edit photos, customize font colors and sizes, select from a variety of greeting card phrases, or compose your own. It's easy to use and it gives you so much more control.

Check out some of my favorite designs:

The Pea is graduating from elementary school this year, and these graduation announcements are the perfect way to let friends and family know how proud I am of her. Love those rounded edges!

Their beautiful scalloped circle holiday cards are one of my all-time favorites; every December I want to fill my tree with them.

If only Photo Card Creations had been around when my kids were born! I guess I'm a sucker for these scalloped-edged cards, but their die-cut designs are really a cut (pun intended) above the rest.

With so many great designs and the new online tool, it all adds up to a Photo Card Creations products that's as special and unique as you are!

What to take to a Boudoir Photo Shoot

Boudoir photo shoots are all the rage nowadays; many women are dressing up (or down) in their lingerie and having a professional photographer take their photos. Some do it as a birthday or anniversary present for their husbands; others do it for themselves, to celebrate a milestone such as a weight loss, birthday, or other accomplishment. I recently had some boudoir photos taken for Alfie's birthday, and I can tell you, it was a liberating experience! I got to smile and smolder for the camera, and the resulting photos were amazing. I'm no Victoria's Secret model, but seeing those photos has done wonders for my self esteem.

As you can imagine, posing half-naked in front of a strange man and woman is not easy, but I highly recommend it. Do it for your husband. Do it for your relationship. Do it for yourself! And now that I'm a boudoir photo shoot veteran, I can offer some advice on what to take with your to the shoot in order to make the most of it:

1) Your confidence
Confidence is sexy! No matter what your shape or size, boudoir photos can highlight your best features and showcase that inner bombshell -- so face that camera with a smile on your face and a glint in your eye. Remember that the photographer is a professional, and it's his job to make you look good! He knows all the angles and lighting to get a great shot -- and when all else fails, you can always resort to a bit of retouching!

2) Bedroom eyes and hair
The one regret I have from my photo shoot is that I didn't make a bigger effort on hair and makeup. I rarely wear makeup so I'm not very good at putting it on, and I wish I had splurged a bit on a professional. I was going for the vamp look, so I'm happy I wore bright red lipstick and slicked my hair back, but in retrospect, I would have emphasized my eyes more with false eyelashes. Of course, heavy makeup isn't a requirement -- you can just as easily go with the natural look -- but remember that every bump and pore can be seen in closeup shots!

3) High heels
Sorry, you'll have to leave your Birkenstocks and Uggs at home. For sexy photos, only high heels will do. They add a touch of spice and naughtiness, and they make your legs look like they go on forever. If you're not used to high heels, don't worry; you'll probably be lying down, kneeling or straddling a chair for most of the photo shoot anyway! If you don't own a pair, borrow one or ask the photographer if he or she keeps some spare pairs at his studio . If that doesn't work, go barefoot.

4) Beautiful lingerie
Lingerie is what makes a boudoir photo shoot a boudoir photo shoot! Leave the white cotton panties and bra at home with the Birkenstocks and let your inner sexy shine! I brought 2 outfits with me; one was a black satin bra and panty set, which really added a stark, dramatic look, and the second was a corset outfit similar to this corset and thong set from EdenFantasys:

They have a huge selection of sexy lingerie, from the racy to the discreet, from teddies to pegnoirs to corsets to babydolls to bra and panty sets. Whatever your size, shape, whether you're bold or timid, you'll find the right lingerie for you.

So what are you waiting for? Your inner sexy is waiting to show itself to the camera!

New American Girl Smart Girl's Guide book

Oh, the tween years. I hated them. I think I looked and felt my worst between the ages of 9 and 12 -- taller than any of the boys, bigger than most of them, with big feet and big hair and bad teeth and bad skin..... I can still remember all the angst and insecurity I felt! I wish I could tell that girl today that in a couple of years, she would discover volleyball and slim down, discover dance and acquire some grace, get braces and transform her look.

The Pea will be 11 in two weeks, and I know she is already going through a lot of what I did. She's tall and big; in my opinion, not so ugly or awkward as I was, but then again, I probably wasn't as ugly as I thought I was! It's all in self-perception, and I'm making it a priority to let my daughter know how special and important she is, and how she should stay confident in her own abilities.

It's not an easy time for a kid, and as a parent, I'll take any help I can get, and American Girl books have already been a big help for me. I've gotten the Pea several of their Be Your Best and Body & Mind books, including The Care and Keeping of You, A Smart Girl's Guide to Friendship Troubles and Take the Challenge, and they have been a good starting point for open, honest discussions about things like having the courage to stand up for your convictions, dealing with rich kid boasting, or what to do to repair a friendship. American Girl's latest title -- A Smart Girl's Guide to Liking Herself -- looks like it's going to be another useful tool to help The Pea navigate the confusing world of growing up. She really likes it, and I think it offers a lot of good advice on where self-esteem comes from, what affects it (her moods, friends, family, etc...) and how she can keep her self-esteem high every single day. Heck, even I could use the advice in this book!

About A Smart Girl's Guide to Liking Herself -- Even on the Bad Days
Has a bad day got her down? In this advice-packed book, girls will learn how high self-esteem can turn a good day into a great day, while low self-esteem can make a bad day even worse. She'll learn tips for trusting herself, ideas for boosting her self-esteem (or for keeping it up), and how to feel her best in all kinds of situations. She is perfect just as she is, and this book will help her believe that to be true! 96 pages. Paperback. Author: Dr. Laurie Zelinger. Ages 10+

Also new this spring at the American Girl Bookstore are 2 Historical Fiction titles, a new Doll Travel craft book, a new Smart Girl's Guide, a new Treasure Totes line, and new titles in their Innerstar University series. Check out the American Girl online bookstore to see all the new titles!

Dale and Thomas Popcorn Review and Giveaway

Popcorn is one of my all-time favorite snacks. It can be salty or sweet. You can enjoy it plain or dress it up with butter, cheese, caramel, chocolate, barbecue flavor, even curry! You can shape it into balls, scoop it into muffin cups, or grab handfuls from a bowl. This week we received a gigantic box of Dale and Thomas Popcorn with 12 of their best-selling gourmet flavors: - Peanut Butter & White Chocolate DrizzleCorn - Twice-As-Nice Chocolate DrizzleCorn - Chocolate Chunk N'Caramel - Black & White Biscotti - Double Chocolate DrizzleCorn - Dark Fudge with Praline Almonds - Dale's Caramel - Cinnamon Creme DrizzleCorn - White Cheddar & Black Peppercorn - Hall of Fame Kettle Corn - Southwest Cheddar Chipotle - North Country Cheddar Each individual bag serves 2-4 people, which I would say is just about right. The bags vary in weight, from 1.5-7 ounces, (the varieties with chocolate are heavier, the salty/cheesy flavors are lighter). We are trying to pace ourselves, but from the moment we opened the first bag, all we wanted to to is rip open all the bags and fight each other to eat as much as we could -- think Hunger Games, but much safer and more enjoyable. So far, we've tried 7 flavors. The first three -- Chocolate Chunk 'N Caramel, Dark Fudge with Praline Almonds and North Country Cheddar -- didn't last long enough for me to swipe a handful for photos, but I managed to put aside some of the rest: In clockwise order, from top left: Dale's Caramel, Double Chocolate Drizzlecorn, Peanut Butter & White Chocolate Drizzlecorn, and Black & White Biscotti. Dale and Thomas, where, oh where have you been all my life? These are soooooo good. Each and every one that we've tried is fresh and crunchy. Each one has a distinct flavor, so with 12 of them, you're pretty much guaranteed to find one you like. Even Alfie, who generally dislikes popcorn, is enjoying it! My favorite so far is the Black & White Biscotti -- somehow they actually managed to make it taste like chocolate-coated biscotti! Dale and Thomas is like the holy grail of gourmet popcorn! So far, the only one that has not received rave reviews from my family is Dale's Caramel -- it seems to be the most heavily coated of all the varieties (the rest of the sweet ones are merely drizzled), and it is cloyingly sweet. I'm wondering whether the Cinnamon Creme DrizzleCorn will be the same way... I'll update this post once I've tried it. In conclusion: Beware. These would tempt even the Dalai Lama. Want to try Dale and Thomas gourmet popcorn? You can enjoy 20% off your order by using promo code BMA12 at checkout (offer expires April 30, 2012).

New American Girl Innerstar University title: The New Girl

When I was young, I loved reading a book series called Choose Your Own Adventure. It's quite a unique kind of book, where the reader is actually the protagonist of the book, and is asked to make choices to determine how the plot develops and what the final outcome of the book will be. Kids are constantly flipping from page to page ("If you choose to go down in the submarine to hunt the sea monster with Captain Kirk, go to page 24. If you choose to stay up on the main ship to battle the Nazi fighter planes with First Mate Jones, go to page 65."), so you can read the book many times and experience a different story. I guess you could say it was the pioneer to interactive entertainment!

It's good to see this kind of multiple-choice, multiple-ending book alive and well today, not just with the re-release of the CYOA series, but in other series like American Girl's Innerstar University books. This series is designed to appeal to girls -- it features My American Girl - type characters and is set in Innerstar University (AG's online game and activity site). The plotlines revolve around typical issues faced by 8 to 13-year old girls, and rewards girl-power values like confidence, independence and courage.

We received a copy of the latest title in the series -- The New Girl -- and I had a lot of fun reading through it. That is, after I managed to tear it away from The Pea! She had never read this kind of book before, and really enjoyed being able to make choices to determine how the story ends. It's a quick and easy read, and The Pea usually tears through a book in no time flat -- but she's not going to get bored any time soon. With over 20 different endings, she's going to get a lot of mileage out of this one book!

I must admit, the of idea of studying in a boarding school with its own stables and shopping mall and candy store may be completely absurd to a grownup -- but it's the perfect fantasy setting for a tween girl. And while the plot dilemmas may seem shallow (You are feeling left out because everyone is paying attention to the new girl), they are definitely issues and feelings that young girls face every day. And while the choices may seem silly, (Should you join the Fashion Outfit competition, even though you know nothing about putting a outfit together, or the Canoeing competition? Should you let Zoe know she's making you feel bad, or keep quiet for now? Should you try the Brie and crackers or politely decline?), I like the way the book "rewards" courage and open-mindedness and strength of character -- for example, making choices to try new things or being brave enough to speak up for your friends will result in happier story endings. It may not be classic literature, but for young girls, it's a good read.

About The New Girl:
Each reader can imagine herself as the main character of this interactive story set in the world of Innerstar University™! She thinks Zoé, the new girl, is brave for coming all the way from her home in France. She wants to get to know Zoé, but she also feels a bit jealous about all the attention the new arrival is getting. When a couple of girls start to tease Zoé, she feels torn—can she find the courage to speak up for what she knows is right? With more than 20 different endings, girls will enjoy this book again and again to see how different decisions change the story. Plus, each book comes with a secret access code to unlock additional endings online! 120 pages. Paperback. Author: Laurie Calkhoven. Ages 8+

Also new this spring is another Innerstar University title -- Behind the Scenes -- and many more, including a new Doll Travel craft book, a new Smart Girl's Guide, a new Treasure Totes line, and 3 new Historical Fiction titles. Check out the American Girl online bookstore to see all the new titles!

Don't forget to enter my giveaway for the latest American Girl mystery book, The Cameo Necklace!
