Nuclear Cowboyz enthralls audiences in San Jose

Nuclear Cowboyz

Spring break has arrived, and boy did we start it with a bang!  We saw Feld Entertainment's amazing freestyle motorcross stunt show, Nuclear Cowboyz, over the weekend.  The Pea gave her ticket up to spend the day with a friend, so 3Po and Jammy invited a friend, and all 3 boys loved the whole show.  Actually, I should say all 4 boys, because Alfie enjoyed it as much as the boys did! It's chock-full of high-flying stunts and tricks that left us gasping and yelping in disbelief.  We were literally on the edge of our seats!

The excitement and energy levels were high even before the show started.  Vendors were selling cotton candy with a special Nuclear Cowboyz beanie, mohawk headbands, and some really cool Nuclear Cowboyz shirts.  There was a section roped off for autograph signing after the show.  When we peeped into the show area, we were amazed by the height of the ramps and runways!  Most were taller than a one-story house, and they must have been spaced at least 50 feet apart.  Some were connected by narrow catwalks or smaller ramps.  The whole setup looked unbelievably scary.
Nuclear Cowboyz

Once the show started, we realized that what these motorcycle riders were doing was even scarier than we had thought!  They zoom up, launch themselves off the ramps, do some kind of crazy trick while flying through the air -- somersaults, handstands, twists, turns, lying down, and my favorite, completely letting go of the bike in mid-air and spreading their arms like they could fly forever -- and landing safely on the other end. Other times, they were pulling wheelies (riding on the back wheel), stoppies (riding on the front wheel), and jumping up and down levels like they were just pedal bikes instead of motorcycles.  I tried to take photos, but I ended up with blurry images because the lights were so low and they were moving so quickly:
Nuclear Cowboyz

The best way to appreciate their tricks is to watch a video of them in action. Don't worry, this video isn't very long, just 4 seconds... but it's 4 seconds of awesomeness:

One of the best tricks of the night was so spectacular, I didn't even have time to take a photo of it.  One of stuntmen was riding around with his back on fire.  Yes, the dude was On. Fire.  Both literally and figuratively. It was the only time during the whole show that anyone had performed a trick like that, as opposed to all the other tricks, which were repeated quite a few times over the course of the show.  That made the Flaming Dude  even more of a moment to treasure.
Nuclear Cowboyz

Two things that made the show more than just a motorcycle stunt show:

1)  In between motorcycle stunts, the Shaolin Kung Fu warriors kept everyone enthralled by their kung fu performances; my favorite parts were when one of the warriors broke a pole over another warrior's head, and when another warrior balanced himself on the tip of a spear (he ended up horizontal, with the only the tip of the spear touching his stomach.  How he escaped impalement is beyong me.

Here's a brief (and blurry, sorry about that!) clip of the Shaolin Kung Fu Warriors in action:

2)  The special effects were pretty amazing, and they entertained me throughout the show!  There were laser beams going forming all kinds of intricate patterns, from lightning to death rays to teleportation rays and more.
Nuclear Cowboyz

There were columns of flame shooting up so high that we could feel the heat all the way from our seats.
Nuclear Cowboyz

There were also fireworks going off every now and then, to punctuate a particularly cool stunt.
Nuclear Cowboyz

A word of warning: the noise level was loud at its quietest moments and deafening at its loudest, and you never knew when the fireworks were going to explode, so I found myself jumping in my seat more than once.  If you're planning to attend the show with young kids, make sure you bring ear plugs!  If you forget your ear plugs, you can roll up a wad of tissue paper and stuff it in your child's ear.

Oh, yeah: there's actually a story that ties the whole show together (spoiler alert!).  The Nuclear Cowboyz, the good guys (a group of motorcycle riders and kung fu warriors) have been captured by an evil queen and forced to compete against her army -- the Shadow Army, also consisting of motorcycle riders and kung fu warriors -- in the ultimate showdown of good versus evil.  The Nuclear Cowboyz win, of course, and in her anger and humiliation, the evil queen prepares to kill her Shadow Army commander.  But the Nuclear Cowboyz commander saves the Shadow Army commander, and in gratitude, the Shadow Army joins forces with the Nuclear Cowboyz to destroy the evil queen once and for all.

Yes, I did warn you that this was a spoiler alert, but the story doesn't really make a huge impact on the show; you don't need to know the story in order to enjoy the show.  In fact, I'll bet that almost all the little kids and probably half of the adults weren't really aware that there was a show.  The roar of the bikes and the rock music and the fireworks were so loud, the narrator's voice over was kind of lost in the cacophony!

Behind the scenes at Nuclear Cowboyz

Nuclear Cowboyz motorcycle stunt show

An exciting new show is zooming over to the Bay Area in less than 2 weeks, and we can't wait!  Nuclear Cowboyz,  freestyle motocross stunt show, will be playing at San Jose's SAP Center on March 29 and 30.  Alfie rides a motorcycle every day to and from work (as well as on weekends), and he loves watching World Superbike and MotoGP races on tv, so the boys have grown up with motorcycles.  They love watching videos of motorcycles jumping off ramps, so I know they will love this show.  The Pea and I aren't too interested in motorcycles, but I learned my lesson about keeping an open mind after watching and enjoying last month's Monster Jam, and I'm really looking forward to this show.  I may not be into motorcycles, but I admire anyone who can do acrobatics and think stunt riders are awesome, so how could I not enjoy a show with people who have perfected both?  I expect to be impressed, and judging from the behind-the-scenes video below, I don't think I'll be disappointed!

You can imagine that such a huge production requires a lot of work and preparation!  Here are a few fun facts about what it takes to put on a show like Nuclear Cowboyz:

- 30,000 plus hours are spent constructing the scenic environment for the tour. The Nuclear Cowboyz key performance configuration consists of 10 ramps; seven take off ramps, three landing ramps and multiple platforms for the trials riders and acrobatics.

- 11 semi-trucks are needed to haul in the show’s scenic environment, bikes and equipment. In most cases, crews begin the load-in process one day before the show and work for 14 hours to get prepared for the show.

- Nearly 65 people are required to load in the entire show including: floor surface, lighting, sound, pyrotechnics, set embellishments and ramps.

- More than 20,000 feet of turf are used to cover the venue floor to accommodate the set.

- Nuclear Cowboyz hosts the largest arena-based pyrotechnics shows in the world. There are more than 1000 custom pyrotechnic elements in the production, which are synchronized with music, laser and show lighting.

- Nuclear Cowboyz consists of 29 cast members including, FMX riders, quad riders, trials riders, Shaolin Martial Artists, dancers and acrobats.

Nuclear Cowboyz is zooming over to the Bay Area

Nuclear Cowboyz motorcycle stunt show

When we took the kids to see Monster Jam a few weeks ago, they saw an ad for another Feld Show, Nuclear Cowboyz.  It looked like a lot of fun -- like a motorcycle stunt show, martial arts demonstration and pyrotechnics spectacular all rolled into one -- and since it involves motorcycles, it was right up the boys' alley.  Imagine our surprise when Feld Entertainment invited us to watch Nuclear Cowboyz when it comes to San Jose on March 29-30!   The kids were so excited, and even though I'm not a motorcycle fan like my kids and husband, watching Monster Jam has taught me to stay open minded and expand my horizons.  I enjoyed Monster Jam, and I think I'm going to enjoy Nuclear Cowboyz even more!  I've since found out a bit more about the show, and it promises to be a pretty amazing spectacle. Here’s the official show description:

Monster Jam show review

Monster Jam
I received complimentary show tickets

Last weekend we took the kids to see Monster Jam at Oakland's O.Co Coliseum.  This was Alfie and the kids' second time to see the show; the first time was about five years ago in Reno.  I opted to stay in the hotel and catch up on a few hours of Me Time, so before this weekend, I truly didn't understand what all the fuss was about.  When Feld Entertainment sent us the invitation, all the kids -- yes, and Alfie -- screamed in excitement; even my girly 12 year-old Pea was excited.  I was looking forward to spending time with the family, of course, but monster trucks aren't really my thing, and I expected to spend most of my time staring at my phone, skimming Facebook and Instagram.

Boy, was I wrong.  I was pretty much glued to my seat for the entire event!  It's hard to look away from the sight of giant trucks with wheels taller than grown men, racing each other on dirt tracks, driving over old cars, flying off hills like ski jumpers, trying desperately to stay upright.  It's like a circus act that never gets old, because each truck is different and each driver drives differently and does different tricks.  The first part of the show consisted of Monster Jam trucks racing each other in pairs.  The losers were eliminated and the winners moved on to quarterfinals, semifinals, and the big final (the winner qualified for the Monster Jam finals in Las Vegas).  The second part of the show was a freestyle competition where Monster Jam trucks had 90 seconds (plus an additional 30 seconds for bonus points) to go around the track and impress the judges (and viewers) with leaps, spins, and bounds.
Monster Jam Oakland CA

It's amazing what the drivers can make their trucks do.  Imagine the tricks that BMX bikers can do -- but imagine a ten thousand pound truck doing it.  Yes, they even did some flips, which were probably accidental, but the crowd absolutely roared whenever a truck would flip or tip over.  They roared even louder when the truck managed to get upright again!  The drivers are absolutely crazy (although I'm sure they're actually highly capable stuntmen).  They really pushed themselves and their trucks to the limit -- sometimes to the point of shaving the whole side off a truck!
Monster Jam Oakland CA

I really didn't expect to enjoy myself so much, so I'm really glad I attended.  Check out your nearest Monster Jam event and take the whole family, it's a lot of fun!  If you're attending a Monster Jam event, here are three tips I have for you and your family to enjoy the event even more:

Bring earplugs
The O.Co Coliseum is an outdoor venue, but it was still extremely loud!   I'm sure I would have been rendered temporarily deaf if Alfie hadn't brought earplugs for the whole family (he rides motorcycles and loves attending races, so he's an old pro at this!).  You can buy disposable earplugs in sporting goods stores that will muffle the sound so well that you won't be able to hear the person beside you -- but still allow you to hear the announcer.  You could also bring earphones or earbuds.  If all else fails, wad up some tissue paper and stuff it in your ear.  It's especially important to protect the ears of children!

Arrive early
The O.Co Coliseum has a capacity of over 60,000, and it was about 80% full.  There are only 10,000 parking spaces, so that's a lot of people looking for parking!  The parking lot closed about 1 hour before showtime, leaving many frustrated families (mine included) having to turn around and look for the overflow lots after waiting almost an hour in line for parking.  Before you go, check your venue's seating capacity and parking capacity to help you plan your arrival time.  I recommend planning to arrive at least an hour before showtime -- you can always grab dinner or join the Pit Party while waiting for the show to start!  Don't forget to check public transportation options!

Buy a Pit Pass
If you're going to arrive early anyway, make the most of your time by joining the pre-show Pit Party!  Pit Party passes cost just $10 per person at our venue (prices may vary with location so don't quote me on that!) and you get to see the Monster Trucks up close.  You can take photos with the trucks and the drivers, wander around, soak up the atmosphere, and get the whole family revved up for the main event!

Disney on Ice presents Rockin' Ever After -- show review

Disney on Ice Presents Rockin Ever After

Disney on Ice is back in the Bay Area, and boy is it rockin'!  The boys and I attended the opening night show of Disney on Ice presents Rockin' Ever After, and we had a great time!  The show features 4 of Disney's best-loved princess tales:  The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Tangled, and Brave.  In this 2-hour show, Disney on Ice skaters bring the movies to life on the ice, skating to songs from the movies and reenacting a condensed version of the story.

The fun starts with Mickey, Minnie, Goofy and Donald skating onto the ice and introducing a series of short performances by Pinocchio, Cinderella's sisters Anastasia and Drizella, and Ariel's six sisters along with Sebastian.  I loved watching Ariel's sisters skate to a medley of tunes from my teenage years including Vogue and Girls Just Wanna Have Fun!
Disney on Ice Presents Rockin Ever After

After Ariel's sisters performed, Sebastian started looking for Ariel, which led to the Little Mermaid portion of the show.  Even though we've seen The Little Mermaid performed on ice several times before, Disney on Ice constantly tweaks the costumes, props, and choreography to keep things fresh.
Disney on Ice Presents Rockin Ever After

Next on the program was the story of Beauty and the Beast.  In past years we've seen Belle and the Beast skate to Tale As Old As Time, but have never seen the whole story reenacted on ice.  The scenery and props for this segment were amazing!  I was really impressed by how they were able to recreate Belle's village, the Beast's library, and Gaston's pub. They even had  real flaming torches for the Kill The Beast musical number.
Disney on Ice Presents Rockin Ever After

Enjoyable as the first half of the show was, I was even more excited to watch the second half because everything was new to me.  After intermission came Tangled, the story of Rapunzel and Flynn Rider.  Again, I was impressed by their clever usage of props like huge flags, the floating lanterns and Rapunzel's tower.  Somehow, they were also able to get Maximus the horse and all the thieving thugs dancing and twirling on the ice -- with frying pans, no less!
Disney on Ice Presents Rockin Ever After

The final quarter of the show featured the Disney-Pixar movie Brave.  I was wondering how they would port the story of Merida onto the ice, because it's not a musical, but they managed to do it quite well.  It started with Mickey Mouse opening a book and beginning Merida's story, then gradually switched over to a narration from Merida's point of view.
Disney on Ice Presents Rockin Ever After

The two main musical numbers were Merida skating to Touch The Sky, and the archery tournament, set to lively Scottish music.  I love Scottish music, so I enjoyed both numbers immensely -- in fact, right after the show I downloaded "Touch The Sky" onto my phone!  It's going to make a great addition to my Disney-themed running playlist!

Of all the 4 stories, Beauty and the Beast seemed the most complete.  If you haven't watched Little Mermaid, Tangled or Brave, you might have a bit of trouble following along, because the show leaves out key elements of the 3 stories. (Ariel & Eric defeating Ursula, cutting Rapunzel's hair, Merida turning her mom into a bear and pretty much the entire second half of the Brave movie).  I'm sure it was a challenge fitting 4 stories into a single show!  I think Disney on Ice did a great job, and this production is one of the best Disney on Ice shows I've seen in recent years!  It's playing tonight and tomorrow at the SAP in Center in San Jose from February 19-23 and Oracle Arena in Oakland from February 26-March 2. Don't miss it!

How to prepare your child for a Disney on Ice show (Disney on Ice presents Rockin' Ever After)

Are you ready for Disney on Ice presents Rockin Ever After?  The show is coming to the Bay Area this week: they'll be at the SAP Center in San Jose from February 19-23 and Oracle Arena in Oakland from February 26-March 2.  Your kids are going to love watching their favorite Disney princesses like Belle, Arielle, Rapunzel and Merida twirl and glide on the ice!  Watching Disney on Ice is a very exciting and special moment for a young child -- it's pretty much the next best thing you can get to actually visiting a Disney park!  There is a lot you can do to prepare for the event and make the most of it.

Plan your child's costume
Many little girls and boys like to attend Disney on Ice shows dressed up as their favorite Disney character.  It's not unusual to see lots of little Ariels, Belles, Cinderellas and Auroras taking their seats alongside their parents!

Buy glow sticks
There will be lots of Disney merchandise for sale, including show programs, hats, balloons, stuffed toys, shirts, and light-up toys.  If you're on a budget, you might want to buy some glow sticks at the dollar store.  That way, your child can enjoy the thrill of waving a glow stick when it gets dark, and you'll still have money left for another souvenir!

Brush up on your Disney trivia
Before you watch the show, refresh yourselves on some of the most memorable moments from the movies!  Challenge your kids to answer the questions below.  They'll probably get a higher score than you will!

Disney•Pixar’s BRAVE
1. What does King Fergus give Merida for her birthday? Answer: A bow and arrow
2. What are the names of Merida’s mischievous triplet brothers? Answer: Harris, Hubert, and Hamish
3. What sport does Merida choose for her suitors to compete in? Answer: Archery
 4. What is the name of the bear that Merida’s father is searching for? Answer: Mor'du
5. What does Merida’s mom eat that turns her into a bear? Answer: A tart from the witch woodcarver

Disney’s The Little Mermaid
6. How many sisters does Ariel have? Answer: Six
7. What is the object that Ariel’s friend Scuttle calls a dinglehopper?Answer: A fork
8. Who tricks Ariel into visiting Ursula to gain human legs? Answer: Flotsam and Jetsam
9. Ursula gives Ariel the ability to walk on land. How long is this ability supposed to last? Answer: 3 days
10.What is the name of Ariel’s best friend? Answer: Flounder

Make sure your child is well rested
Disney on Ice presents Rockin Ever After starts at 7:30PM and lasts a good 2 hours, so it's going to be a late night for the little ones.  They'll be happy, excited... and very tired!  Make sure your toddlers get a good afternoon nap, and make sure older kids get some sleep the night before and the night after.

Bring a camera
There's nothing quite like seeing the joy in your child's face as she sees her favorite Disney characters glide out onto the ice and sees the cast of characters dance to her favorite Disney tunes.  Make sure you have a camera on hand to capture all the moments and the memories!

Monster Jam

About Monster Jam trucks
Today’s Monster Jam® trucks use lightweight bodies and tires so more strength and weight can be put into the frame without sacrificing speed, maneuverability, or safety.

1. Body – Made of fiberglass, a Monster Jam truck body is custom designed to create a character or theme for the truck. Custom body trucks can be carved by hand out of styrofoam and wood to create a “plug” which is then used to create a fiberglass body mold or created by computers.

2. Driver Seat – Most Monster Jam trucks have the driver seated in the center of the vehicle so he or she can best see the track for weight distribution. The seats are custom molded to each driver’s body and all drivers use head and neck restraint devices to keep their heads secure during rough landings. As a safety measure, all seatbelts employ a 5 point harness to restrain the driver’s body.

3. Paint – Most Monster Jam trucks feature highly designed, customized airbrushed artwork on their bodies. Airbushing is expensive and time consuming as some trucks require more than 40 hours of paint time. Monster Jam body fabricators are always assured lots of work though, as their custom creations are routinely destroyed during the shows.

4. Engines – Custom-built, supercharged and methanol-injected, a Monster Jam truck engine burns up to 10 liters of methanol per run (approximately 80 meters) and delivers about 1,500 horsepower.

5. Suspension System – In order to allow the drivers to withstand the punishing impacts of jumping and crashing a Monster Jam truck during a performance, each truck is equipped with specially-engineered extra long 76cm shock absorbers filled with oil and nitrogen gas that are installed with each tire.

6. Tires – Each Monster Jam truck tire is custom made. They must be 66 inches high and 43 inches wide. The average Monster Jam truck team will go through 8 tires in one year. Tires are designed differently to satisfy various track conditions and driver preference. Carving just one tire requires over 50 hours of exacting labor.

Mickey and the Magical Map now open in Fantasyland Theatre at Disneyland Park

I've always thought that the live shows at the Disneyland Resort are one of the best bargains around.  For the cost of park admission, you not only get to unlimited rides in the park, you also get admission to some pretty spectacular stage productions!  Shows like Disney's Aladdin - A Musical Spectacular, Disney Junior -- Live on Stage or Billy Hill and the Hillbillies might easily cost $20-$60 if they were a touring show appearing in your local theater concert venue.  And don't forget all the parades, Fantasmic and World of Color!

This year, the Disneyland Resort has added a new live show to its entertainment schedule:  “Mickey and the Magical Map", which opened at Disneyland Park today, May 25.  I saw the show during last week's trip to the Disneyland Resort and I couldn't be more impressed. It was magical!

The home of Mickey and The Magical Map is the Fantasyland Theatre, the big tented area beside It's A Small World which used to be the place guests could go to meet the Disney Princesses.  Now that the princesses have made their home in Fantasy Faire, the Fantasyland Theatre was refurbished to provide seating for about 1,800 guests, and the stage was completely reimagined.
Mickey and the Magical Map

As the title suggests, the show features two main characters: Mickey and the Map.  Mickey puts on his Sorcerer's Apprentice robe and once again lets his curiosity get the better of him as he explores a magical map.

The map is actually a giant LED screen (with over 1 million pixels!) that acts as an animated backdrop, multi-level stage, prop, and character in the story, and it's so amazing that I need to dedicate a separate post to rhapsodizing about its wonders -- so stay tuned for a behind-the-scenes look at Mickey and the Magical Map, including an interview with one of the Imagineers behind the show, VP of Creative Development Michael Jung!

Mickey and the Magical Map

Throughout the show, the map takes Mickey to different places, where guests meet some of their favorite characters from Disney movies, starting with the jungle temple ruins where King Louie
the orangutan sings "I Wan'na Be Like You".

Next, the map takes Mickey to America, China, and the kingdom of Corona, where Pocahontas, Mulan and Rapunzel, respectively, live.  They sing a beautiful medley; the songs happen to be 3 of my favorites, "Just Around The River Bend", "Reflection" and "I See The Light".

Then the map takes Mickey to Ariel's world, where Sebastian sings Under The Sea.  Bubbles blow into the audience during this number, and two of the dancers somehow insert themselves into giant plastic? rubber? bubbles, something I've never seen before.

As we resurface, we find ourselves in Hawaii, surfing with Lilo and Stitch in a "Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride".  This was probably my favorite dance number because I loved how the dancers utilized the surfboard props to launch each other into some serious acrobatic moves.

Mickey's magical journey finally ends in New Orleans, where Tiana leads the grand finale in a rousing rendition of Dig A Little Deeper.

Not only does this number have a cool riverboat float, it has an even cooler trumpet player who makes some serious jazz music.Check it out!

Mickey and the Magical Map will run 5 times per day, 7 days per week during the summer.  The show lasts about 22 minutes, but as with all good shows anywhere, I would arrive at least 30 minutes before showtime to get a good seat and settle in. You are allowed to eat inside this theatre; in fact, the Troubador Tavern is located right beside the theatre.

This show really blends the best in technology, set design, dance, song and storytelling.  I know it's all too easy to pack your day at Disneyland enjoying rides, but it's definitely worth making time to catch a performance of Mickey and the Magical Map.

Disclosure: I was invited to a press event for a preview of Mickey and the Magical Map.  Travel and lodging were provided but I did not receive monetary compensation for this post. The views and opinions expressed here are my own.

World of Color makes visitors part of the show

Like much of Disney's California Adventure, the World of Color light and water show has gotten an amazing makeover. Not only have parts of the show been changed to feature newer Disney movies (like Toy Story 3 and Brave), guests can now become part of the show by purchasing "Glow With The Show" Mickey Mouse ears that light up and change in time with the music!

I was lucky enough to be one of the first to see the new light-up ears and how they interacted with the show, at a special media viewing of World of Color last month.  Everyone who attended was given a pair of light-up ears.  The ears have built-in circuits to receive signals to light up and change colors, in the same way that the big round lights on the steps of Paradise Pier light up and change colors with the show.

The show is already amazing, but adding the light-up ears truly makes people go Oooh and Ahhh.  It's truly amazing:  sometimes the ears will glow one color, sometimes another, sometimes they will flash different colors at random so it looks like twinkling lights.  Sometimes different sections of the viewing area will glow with different colors.  Disney officials say the ears will also work at the new Mad T Party dance party.  At $25, they're a lot more expensive than glow sticks, but then again, you can't wear glow sticks on your head the next day, and every time you visit Disneyland in the future.  And the experience of being part of the Disney magic was truly priceless!

Disclosure: The Disneyland Resort provided media privileges, park admission for my family and accomodations for the duration of the Cars Land opening event. Other costs, including transportation, meals and extra days at the Disneyland Resort, were incurred at my expense. The views and opinions expressed here are my own.

How The Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical

Santa may wear red, but this year our favorite holiday do-gooder is 100% green. After attending the opening performance of How The Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical, we think Santa Claus might have to join the ranks of the unemployed because The Grinch did such a great job spreading holiday cheer. How the Grinch Stole Christmas has become just as much a part of our holiday tradition as watching The Nutcracker, so we were thrilled to be invited. In fact, we were so excited to see it that I drove up to San Francisco a day early! Okay, I only did that because I suffer from mommy brain, especially during the holidays, and I thought the show was on Wednesday, but that doesn't change the fact that we were really looking forward to seeing it. After seeing the show, it turns out that our excitement was definitely not misplaced. It was wonderful -- well worth both drives :)

Practically everyone know the story of The Grinch, but here's a synopsis anyway:

About the show
Discover the magic of Dr. Seuss' classic holiday tale as it comes to life on stage. Featuring the hit songs "You're A Mean One, Mr. Grinch" and "Welcome Christmas," The Grinch discovers there's more to Christmas then he bargained for in this heart-warming holiday classic. Max the Dog narrates as the mean and scheming Grinch, whose heart is "two sizes too small", decides to steal Christmas away from the Whos, an endlessly cheerful bunch bursting with holiday spirit. Celebrate the holidays with this heart-warming holiday classic.

You can pretty much read through the whole of Dr. Seuss' book in 10 minutes, so they had to fill out the story here and there in order to keep audiences entertained for 90 minutes (it's shorter than the usual musical production, which makes it really good for young kids). Just like in the movie, Cindy Lou Who plays a much bigger role than in the book. Cindy Lou Who's family makes an appearance, and there are musical numbers featuring the Whos in Whoville doing their holiday shopping and preparing for Christmas.

Not to worry, Dr. Seuss purists: I think the additions actually enhance, rather than detract, from the spirit of Dr. Seuss' tale. In fact, the whole production feels like it came straight out of a Dr. Seuss book! The costumes are wacky and colorful, and the Whos all look and act like cartoon versions of real people. The sets look like Dr. Seuss's inked illustrations, and even Max the Dog's reindeer antler is tied to his head with red cotton thread.

Unfortunately I can't show you how Dr. Seuss-like everything was, because photos weren't allowed in the theatre, but I can tell you to watch this video clip from the musical:

Even better, I can show you what the Grinch looks like close up, because after the show he came out to say hi to me, my kids and some other lucky families! You can really appreciate his costume at close quarters; you can't really tell where his hair ends and his costume begins! He stayed in character the whole time, and even complemented The Pea on her grinchy green coat.

The kids really loved meeting him -- Jammy made it a point to introduce him to our own little stuffed Grinch (which the real Grinch loved). In fact, they loved every moment of the show. They laughed out loud at all the right parts, and even at their advanced ages of 10 and 7, they found themselves shouting along with the rest of the audience whenever the Grinch egged them on. It is such lighthearted fun, We couldn't have asked for a better way to get into the Christmas spirit!

The Grinch plays at San Francisco's Golden Gate Theatre through December 29. You can purchase tickets at SHN's ticket website. This is the last stop on the Grinch's 2011 holiday tour, so don't miss it!

Disclosure: I received 4 complimentary tickets to the show, courtesy of SHN. Show information is provided by SHN and is indicated in italics. The views and opinions expressed here are my own.
