Preserve and relive your memories with Photolane photo books (Giveaway)

Photolane photo book
I received a sample for review.

Some of the happiest moments of my life have been spent traveling with my family. Experiences, not things, make me happy, and I'm never happier when I'm exploring new places and enjoying new things with the people I love.  Things come and go, but memories last forever.... well, sort of.  The feelings of joy and happiness associated with those memories will always stay with me.   But the details?  Not so much.  Those memories last a whole lot longer when you have photos to help you relive them!

That's why I love creating photo books for each trip we take, and I love taking the photo books out from time to time, letting the photos spark the memories, helping us retell our adventures and our stories.

A few weeks ago, I discovered an easy new way to preserve and share stories: the Photolane app. Photolane lets you create a gorgeous photobook with your photos and video clips in just minutes. You can share the digital photobook online, and you can order a physical photobook, which has 32 pages and measure 8" square. For only $40 you get a hand crafted, one of a kind lay-flat book delivered straight to your front door, in just 5 days. Photolane invited me to create my own photobook and share my experience.

Photolane is an iPhone app (it's not yet available for Android, but that's coming soon).  Download the app on your phone or iPad, and you can use the photos on your device to create and edit as many photo books as you want.  I love that you can save your work and come back to it another time.

Select a theme and a set of photos from your phone, and Photolane will autopopulate your photo book for you. You can also select more photos from your phone if you want.  Photolane claims you can create a book in as little as 5 minutes, but honestly, it took me way more than 5 minutes.  Now that I've created my first book, I could probably create one in 10 or 20 minutes, but it took a while to check out the styles and the layouts, and to figure out how to drag pages around.

You can select from a variety of layouts for each page, including single page layouts, multiple page layouts, and 2-page photo spreads.  Some layouts have text, some don't. Everything is super simple and super easy to use.

You can switch around the order of the pages -- although to be honest, I found it really difficult to do so.  You touch and hold a page, then drag it to where you want it -- but more often than not, it ends up dropping in the wrong place because the pages scroll by so quickly.  You can avoid (or at least minimize) the frustration I went through by selecting the photos in the order in which you want them to appear in your photo book.

I forgot about all my frustrations as soon as I clicked "order".  The photo book arrived at my home in just a few days, and quality

The photo book came inside a cardboard sleeve with 4 photos printed on it (protecting the photo on the front of the book), and a cutout window revealing the photo book title. It's a special touch that I wasn't expecting, so it was a nice surprise!

I am so happy with how this photo book turned out! Photolane did a fantastic job.  The layout is minimal and ultra clean, so the focus is on the photos, not the embellishments.  The photos are printed out in beautiful color and detail, on heavy, high quality paper. The pages lay flat, so it's easy to flip through the book and relive all your memories.

The learning curve for using the app was a bit steeper than I expected, but now that I know how to use it, churning out gorgeous photo books is going to be so easy!  We've got a few trips scheduled this spring and summer, so I'm definitely keeping Photolane app on my phone...

Add More Pixie Dust to your DisneySide Party with HP and MyPrintly

DisneySide party invitations with HP photo paper

One of the easiest ways to save money when throwing a party is to make some or all of your own decorations.  You can make wall posters, banners, bunting, signs, and so much more, with just some paper, pens, and paint.  If you don't consider yourself the artistic type, then substitute pens and paint for a good printer!  The internet is teeming with great ideas and images to print out.

One of the most useful things that I received in my DisneySide At Home Celebration box was a set photo paper cards from HP.  I used them to print out invitations and thank you cards for the party.  The theme of my DisneySide party was Paintball Mickey (because my son celebrated his 11th birthday with a paintball party), so I found an image of Mickey, an image of a paintball gun (from Disney Infinity), and some images of paint blobs.  I combined them with a photo of the kids in their paintball gear for a cute and memorable thank you card.  I also have a more generic Mickey Paintball invitation and thank you card image at the bottom of this post -- feel free to download and use for your own Mickey Paintball party!

We held the party at our local paintball field.  The place had a picnic area with first-come-first-served picnic tables, so I decided to make a birthday sign to mark our spot.  Artist Simon Phipps generously allowed me to use his adorable Mickey Paintball artwork for the sign.  I added a few more paint splotches and a Happy Birthday sign, then printed out two copies.  I pasted both printouts onto a sheet of stiff cardboard, then attached it to a wooden stick.

I stuck the sign into a glass jar filled with plastic beads in order to make it stand up.  I also added a few smaller Mickey Mouse Clubhouse signs to make the display more festive.  Everyone thought it looked cool, and all our guests had no problem finding our party table!  Thank you so much Simon for letting me use your artwork!  (Please note, the Mickey Paintball artwork belongs to Simon Phipps and cannot be used without his permission!).

Below are the Mickey Paintball invitations and thank you cards that I designed.  They should be printed on 4x6 photo paper.  Feel free to download and print (if you do blog about them, please mention me and link to this post!). To see what other great things you can do with photo paper, go to MyPrintly, HP's new site for printing projects and ideas.  Enjoy!

American Girl Magazine Special Birthday Coloring Page

American Girl Magazine turns 20 this year, and their latest issue is all about celebrations and parties!  Their Jan/Feb 2013 kicks off a yearlong celebration with lots of tips and tricks for throwing the best party ever.  You'll find ideas for party snacks, favors, games and activities, along with true birthday tales from American Girl readers.

Best of all, the birthday issue has a special birthday-themed pull-out coloring page!  I've said it before and I'll say it again, coloring pages are one of the best activities to keep guests occupied -- early arrivals can color while waiting for everyone else, stragglers at the end of the party can color while waiting for their parents, and everyone can color between party games!  I've scanned the pull-out so that anyone planning an American Girl-themed party can make copies for all their guests to enjoy:

These three pages are actually one long panoramic coloring sheet, so you can print each one individually and connect them, or print the full image below:

Click on each image to access the full-sized image, then right-click and select "Save As..." to download the image to your computer.

If you prefer your documents in Adobe PDF format, here is a link to the same coloring pages on my Scribd account.  To download, just click on the link or on the Download icon (with the downward-facing arrow)

You can subscribe to American Girl Magazine online, or if you just want the birthday issue, you can purchase the American Girl Magazine birthday issue individually at AmericanGirl.com.

For more American Girl party activities, check out the American Girl Magazine archives.  They have some great ideas from past issues for girls to download or enjoy online.

Decorating for Halloween with HP printables

Every year I start decorating for Halloween on the first of October.  It's my favorite holiday, so I go all out transforming our home, but I do just a little bit every day, so I don't get overwhelmed.  Over the years I've amassed a decent collection of Halloween decor, but when I first started decorating, all I had to work with was a few pieces, some bolts of orange and black cloth, the kids' artwork, and some printables -- and I think I did a pretty decent job!

In fact, with all the great Halloween printables online, decorating is a piece of cake (or should I say, pumpkin pie?).  All you need are sheets of paper, a printer, a computer and an internet connection!   This year I went to the HP Creative Studio for some great Halloween printables.  You name the printable, they've got it -- from masks to photo frames to party invites to paper chains to pumpkin carving templates to banners to greeting cards to lanterns and more.  There are even links to elegant Martha Stewart Halloween printables.  It's all free to download and print!

HP and Snapfish sent me an assortment of printouts from their printables site, and the kids have been having lots of fun with it.  We strung up the Happy Halloween banner over our magnetic board in the kitchen (which already has the kids' Halloween-themed artwork as well as some cute printable greeting cards from the HP site).

I love these printable Halloween lanterns.  You can string them up with yarn or even small lights, but I chose to line them up on my kitchen windowsill, where the afternoon sun shines through them and gives them a beautiful glow.

I printed out 8 of them (it works best if you print them on sturdy cardstock), cut them out, folded them according to the instructions (super easy) and taped the folds together.  Instant Halloween charm!

Disclosure:  I received printouts of select free printables, a code for a free photo book and a Snapfish gift card as a thank-you for posting about HP's Halloween printables.  The views and opinions expressed here are my own.
