Giveaway: Shutterfly Holiday Card Collection 2013

Shutterfly holiday cards
I  am being compensated (via product) for this post

The holidays are almost here, and it's time to start working on your family holiday cards!  This year I'm looking at holiday cards from Shutterfly, and they have so many cute designs, it might take me till Dec. 25 to decide on the final design!  Here are my final candidates:

The Colors of Christmas tri-fold card stands up on its own, both literally and figuratively, so it's guaranteed a special spot on your family and friends' mantelpieces!  I love that you can add so many photos as well as enough text for a family newsletter.
Shutterfly holiday cards

The To Be Jolly square card is so chic, it might even work as a giant holiday gift tag!  Just punch a hole in one corner and thread with a colorful ribbon or string.  It's a flat card, not a folded card, but fortunately Shutterfly lets you customize the front and the back, so you don't waste an inch of space.
Shutterfly holiday cards

Vintage holiday cards are all the rage, and I love the cheerful fonts and flourishes on Shutterfly's Vintage Holiday design.  The rounded corners give it a fresh, updated look that keeps the card from looking too out-of-date.

In case it does take you until December 25 to choose your card designs, don't worry!  Shutterfly has lots of New Year's cards to send family and friends your best wishes for 2014.  This Sparkle and Shine design has all the color and cheer you'd expect for such a happy occasion.
Shutterfly holiday cards

I'm a sucker for full-bleed photos and overlays, so this Joy and Family design is currently my top contender.   The photo of my kids is front and center, and the focus is on their beautiful faces.  It's simple but beautiful and meaningful, and I couldn't ask for anything more.  What's more, I even found a photo magnet in a matching design, so I can include it along with the card in a holiday package to send to my family overseas.  My mom loves photo gifts, so I might even throw in a mug or a mouse pad!

What do you think?  Which card design should I choose?  For that matter, which card design would you choose?  Share your favorite, and you could win a $50 Shutterfly gift card below!  You could also win more great Shutterfly prizes at the upcoming #PhotosYouLove Twitter Party on November 15 at 8 PM ET, hosted by Shutterfly and @ResourcefulMom.

The Leapfrog Learning Path app is now available at Apple's app store

If you've read my blog for any length of time you'll know that I'm a big Leapfrog fan. I love the way Leapfrog combines education and entertainment to make learning fun for kids! One of the things I love best about Leapfrog products is how they make it easy for parents to stay involved in their child's learning process, via the Leapfrog Learning Path online tool.  When you create a Learning Path account, you can add your children to your account and connect their Leapfrog devices to it, so you can keep track of what they've played and for how long.  But the Learning Path isn't just a virtual nanny: it also gives you insights into the skills your child is learning as she plays.  You'll even get recommendations on ways to extend the learning through activity suggestions and expert articles.  Short of looking over your child's shoulder, it's the best way to stay involved in your child's learning process!

Previously, the Leapfrog Learning Path could only be accessed online at http://www.leapfrog.com/en-us/learning-path -- but now, parents can take the Learning Path anywhere they go, with the new Learning Path app.  It's available for free on Apple's app store, and it just launched today.

If your child owns a Leapfrog device, such as a LeapReader, TAG, LeapPad, Leapster GS or LeapPad Ultra, downloading the Learning Path app is a no-brainer.  You can track your child's progress from your mobile device.

You can get tips and advice from the Leapfrog community, and share your own.

You can even access printables and other activities (although for some reason, it's not on the main menu.  You have to access it by touching the search icon.  I kind of wish it was a menu item on your child's profile, the way learning goals and community discussions are).  All the content you get is tailored to your child's age and ability.  What a great way to keep your child entertained on the go!

The Learning Path tracks your child's progress from infanthood to toddlerhood to preschool to the early elementary years (grades 2-3).  I do wish the Learning Path could be expanded to accommodate children in 4th and 5th grade (you can only add children up to grade 2/3).  Even though my boys are in 4th grade, I could still use the help and support that the Learning Path gives!

Parents of newborns: learn about RSV and how it could affect you

I participated in a campaign on behalf of Mom Central Consulting (#MC) for MedImmune. I received a promotional item as a thank you for participating.

When I found out I was pregnant with twins 10 years ago, I knew that one of the biggest risks they faced was premature (gestation period of 37 weeks or less).  It was a scary thought.  My husband's nephew was born at 27 weeks; he was so small, he fit into my sister-in-law's palm!  He was extremely lucky in that he ended up with no adverse consequences of his premature birth, and we were also very lucky in that our twin boys were born at 38 weeks, which is considered full term even for single births.

Sadly, 13 million premature babies are born worldwide each year, many with serious health challenges. Over 1 million preemies have died from complications this year alone.  That's why it's' so important to spread awareness of the potential risks of preterm births, and ways for parents to help protect their babies. With cold and flu season coming up, and with November 17 being World Prematurity Day, it's the perfect time to remind parents of preemies of the risks associated with RSV.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) affects nearly all babies under age 2, but preterm infants are at far higher risk of serious complications from RSV, due to their underdeveloped lungs and immune systems. It's the leading cause for hospitalization of babies under 1 year, and about 400 babies die from RSV every year.  RSV can be fatal for preterm infants, so MedImmune has come up with an infographic to help parents determine whether their baby is at risk for RSV, how to reduce the risk of contracting RSV and how to recognize the symptoms.  I encourage parents of infants everywhere to educate themselves about RSV.  The infographic below is a great place to start, and for more information, go to RSVProtection.com. It could save your baby's life!

Enter Hallmark Cards' and CaringBridge's "Caring Messages" card design contest

I participated in a campaign on behalf of Mom Central Consulting (#MC) for CaringBridge. I received a promotional item as a thank you for participating.

After dinner last night, 3Po came down with a case of stomach flu, and spent half the night throwing up and the other half wishing he could throw up.  I stayed up with him, cleaning him up, comforting him.  It's hard to see your child suffering while you're helpless to stop the pain.  I give thanks every day that a bout of food poisoning is the worst we have to worry about.  I don't know what I'd do if any of my kids had a more serious medical condition... which is why I'm in awe of the CaringBridge, the nonprofit caring social network that helps families stay connected and supported during trying times.

I first heard of CaringBridge when a friend's daughter was diagnosed with leukemia.  I saw first hand how CaringBridge helped them update their family and friends on their daughter's condition without having to respond to dozens of emails.  They were able to receive messages of support and love from everyone so they knew they were never alone.

November is National Family Caregiver Month, and to celebrate parents and other caregivers who tirelessly work to comfort and care for a loved one in need, Hallmark Cards and CaringBridge have partnered on a Caring Messages card contest.  Participants can design a card for a caregiver for the chance to win a cash prize and the chance to see their card sold at Hallmark.com.  Here's more information about the contest:

About the Contest
To celebrate and support caregivers, the strong personal heroes who tirelessly help families get through one day at a time when experiencing a hardship, CaringBridge, the nonprofit caring social network, and Hallmark Cards are kicking off the “Caring Messages” card contest during National Family Caregiver Month.

From October 28th through November 17th, the “Caring Messages” card contest encourages participants to draw on personal experiences as a caregiver or as someone receiving care and create a message of love and support appropriate for a caregiver. Participants can submit one card idea in each of the following categories to www.hallmarkcontests.com:

Support and Encouragement: What can you say to lift someone up or help them get through the day? Let them know you’re thinking of them, send happy thoughts and cheer them on.

Compliments and Appreciation: Let someone know how much you admire them: What they do and how they do it.

Words from the Wise: If you’ve experienced something yourself you understand what it’s really like. Write a supportive message for others based on what you’ve learned or what you needed to hear.

This partnership aims to provide patients, caregivers and supporters with love, hope and compassion. Winners announced in February will receive a cash prize, and their entry will be sold at Hallmark.com with in-store sale to be determined

I've got even better news: this week is Grocery Outlet's semi-annual wine sale!  That's right, you get 20% off all wines. That's on top of Grocery Outlet's already great prices, so it's your chance to save big.  You never know which wines are going to be on sale at your local Grocery Outlet, but here are some that you might see:

Social Media All-Stars Show Their DisneySide at Disneyland Park

Everyone has a serious side.  A fun side.  A responsible side.  A wild side.  And everyone has a Disney side! You know which side I'm talking about.  It's the side that wants to wear a Cinderella costume at Halloween.  The side that thinks pancakes taste better when they're shaped like Mickey Mouse.  The side that makes your heart quicken when you step into The Happiest Place on Earth. That's the side I'm showing in my photos above!  And that's the side that Disney wants everyone to share in their new social media campaign, #DisneySide.

To celebrate the DisneySide in all of us, Disney Parks invited twenty-four of the hottest names in social media -- including YouTube sensations Tiffany Alvord and Mike Tompkins, Pinterest stars Handmade Charlotte and Erin Loechner, popular Instagrammer Trotter Pup, and Vine virtuosos Rob Johnston and Ian Padgham, to name a few -- to show their DisneySide via a video, photo, or other internet meme. They are truly the All-Stars of Social Media: collectively, their work has been viewed more than 2 billion times, and they have 30 million fans between them! These Social Media All-Stars debuted their creations yesterday at Disneyland Park.... and I was there to witness the premiere showing!  Here are some of my favorites:

Reality Changers has almost half a million subscribers on YouTube!  This father-daughter duo has received over 26 million views from just one of their videos, and they have performed on the Ellen Degeneres show and America's Got Talent.

Tiffany Alvord has over 1.6 million YouTube subscribers and more than 340 million video views.  Performing for the crowd at Fantasyland Theatre was no problem for her, because she has sange on New Year's Eve in Times Square!

Here's how Tiffany showed her Disney Side:

I love a capella artists, and Mike Tompkins is one of the best.  Every sound you hear on his YouTube videos was made with his voice.  His Disney Side video was a sweet tribute to the very first time he visited a Disney park:

The Social Media All-Stars were a varied bunch: musicians, comedians, photographers, artists, crafters, and parents.  I loved how each one of them showed their Disney Side in their own unique way! Artist Mary Doodles was particularly impressive, creating a time lapse video of Disney Princesses and Villains coming to life through her pen:

Finally, it wouldn't be social media without pets!  The most famous of them all, Grumpy Cat, was on hand to make the Happiest Place on Earth a little bit grumpier....

... while Instagram star Trotter Pup showed everyone his back side, I mean his Disney Side

That's just a handful of the creative work of the Disney Side Social Media All-Stars!  You can see the full list and links to their work on this post from the Disney Parks Blog. And stay tuned for more of my trip report posts from the DisneySide event!

Disclosure: Travel and accommodations for the DisneySide premiere was provided by The Disneyland Resort. The views and opinions expressed here are my own.

Giveaway: Il Divo's latest album, A Musical Affair is now in stores

I received a sample to review

Simon Cowell may be an arrogant donkey's behind, but I like the guy. Whatever you think about his personality, you have to admit the guy knows his stuff. He knows talent when he sees it, and he knows how to turn raw talent (i.e. winners of pop contests like American Idol and The X Factor) into some of the biggest names in entertainment.

Simon is best known for discovering and signing pop stars like Leona Lewis and One Direction, but one of his biggest talents isn't even a pop act.  Well, sort of.  I'm talking about Il Divo, the classical crossover quartet that has sold over 26 million albums worldwide.  I love how Il Divo has done so much to make classical music and the operatic style "cool".  Who can resist their amazing voices, romantic song selections, and sophisticated good looks?  Not this mom!  That's why I was delighted to receive screeners for Il Divo's latest album, "A Musical Affair".

The album, which released just yesterday (November 5), is a compilation of Broadway songs sung in a mix of English, Spanish, Italian, Latin and French.   I love the fact that they chose songs from such a wide variety of Broadway musicals: not just currently popular ones like Phantom of the Opera and Les Miserables, but some oldies-but-goodies like South Pacific, The King and I, and Cats.  Several of the songs are performed with top names like Barbra Streisand, Kristin Chenoweth and Nicole Scherzinger -- again, a wide variety of styles!  Who would have thought that Nicole Sherzinger would sing along with Il Divo! To me, that variety is what makes Il Divo so appealing to so many people.  When you have a multinational group (the members are Spanish, Swiss, American and French) singing about something as universal as love, of course the whole world is going to love you!

Here is the track list of A Musical Affair
1. Memory
2. Can You Feel the Love Tonight
3. Bring Him Home
4. Tonight
5. All I Ask of You
6. Some Enchanted Evening
7. Who Can I Turn To?
8. Who Wants to Live Forever
9. You'll Never Walk Alone
10. If Ever I Would Leave You
11. Love Changes Everything
12. The Music of the Night (Live in Concert)

Win an promotional copy of A Musical Affair
Two lucky Bonggamom Finds readers will receive a screener of Il Divo's lastest cd, A Musical Affair!  Please note that this is a promotional copy of the album, not the final version released on November 5; it does not have the official album artwork and does not contain the final (Live in Concert) track of The Music of the Night.

How to throw a HEXBUG bug-themed party

HEXBUG Nano V2 party
I received product samples for review

Who would have thought that something so small would turn out to be such a big thing? The new HEXBUG Nano V2 takes the concept of battery-operated bugs upside-down.  Not only can these tiny robotic creatures scurry forwards, backwards, and side to side, they can even go up, down, and upside-down!  The Nano V2 bugs are HEXBUG's latest and greatest creations, and they're guaranteed to captivate a whole new generation of kids.

If you have a budding entymologist with a birthday coming up, a HEXBUG-themed party is the perfect way to celebrate.  Any child who goes buggy for bugs will love it, and parents will love it because it's so easy:  Just put out a bunch HEXBUG Nano V2's and a few HEXBUG playsets, and the kids will entertain themselves!  The HEXBUG team sent us enough Nano V2 bugs and play sets to host a fun party for 3Po, Jammy and their friends.  Here's a recap of everything that went on at our party; feel free to use and adapt the ideas for your own bug-themed party!

DECOR
We had our party in our back yard, so I figured the abundance of green grass and leaves would take care of 99% of the need for decor :)   Fortunately, it's really easy to decorate for a bug-themed party: just have your child draw giant butterflies on construction paper, cut them out and tape them up on a wall.  Green or bug-printed tablecloths and partyware round out the theme nicely.  You could even face paint butterflies and bugs on your guests so they can be part of the decor!
Finally, consider an accent piece such as tissue pompom bumblebees hanging from an umbrella, or a Hungry Caterpillar balloon sculpture.

Hungry Caterpillar wall decor:  Blow up 10 green balloons and 1 red balloon, then tape the balloons up on a wall, in a curvy line, with the red balloon at one end.  Tape black construction paper eyes and antennae onto the red balloon, and black construction paper feet onto the green balloons, and you've got Eric Carle's Hungry Caterpillar!

ACTIVITIES
The best part about hosting a HEXBUG party is that the guests can entertain themselves for hours!   Using the play sets included in our HEXBUG Nano V2 party pack, we built half a dozen bug habitats, and the boys let their bugs loose.  There were enough configurations to keep all the boys busy, and they spent quite a bit of time reconfiguring the habitats into their own crazy, twisted pathways.  I didn't even have to plan any party games, because they ended up making their own.  Here are a few they enjoyed the most:

Race to the Top
Build a two-level HEXBUG Nano V2 habitat.  Give each child a HEXBUG Nano V2 bug. Let the bugs loose at the bottom of the habitat at the same time, and see which one reaches the highest point first!
HEXBUG Nano V2 party

Bug Swarm
See how many HEXBUG Nano V2 bugs you can cram into a single Nano V2 tube!
HEXBUG Nano V2 party

Young muscles can get cramped from crouching around a HEXBUG habitat for hours, so I also set out a few outdoor toys for some active fun.  Here are a couple of activities you can customize to fit a bug party theme:

Sting like a Bee:  Set up a foam target at one end of your driveway and set up a Stomp Rocket about 5 feet away.  Launch your stomp rocket (make sure no-one is near the target!) and see which "stingers" hit the target!

Swat the Fly: Also known as badminton!  All you need is a spider web (badminton net), fly (shuttlecock) and fly swatters (badminton rackets).  Encourage your bug hunters to swat the fly, then stand back and enjoy the fun.
badminton

TREATS
Caterpillar Grapes: Slide red and green grapes onto a wooden skewer to make a sweet, healthy treat.
HEXBUG Nano V2 party

Worms and Dirt cupcakes: Dip frosted chocolate cupcakes into a bowl filled with chocolate graham cracker crumbs, then top with a gummy worm.
HEXBUG Nano V2 party

GOODIE BAGS
Another great thing about hosting a HEXBUG party is that the main party activity also doubles as a goodie bag.  Our guests got to choose 3 HEXBUGs each, and we split up the playsets so that each child could have their own HEXBUG habitats to play with at home.
HEXBUG Nano V2 party

Everyone had a lot of fun, and it was hard to break the party up.  Even the grownups who arrived to pick up their kids were amazed at how the Nano V2's could shimmy up and down all those tubes.  3Po and Jammy really enjoyed introducing what might be the holiday season's hottest toy to their friends!

Win a chance to tour the Disneyland Dream Suite

A few months ago I had the incredible opportunity to tour Disneyland's Dream Suite, the over-the-top, money-can't-buy, luxury apartment suite originally meant to host Walt Disney's executive guests.  It's not open to the public, and the only way you can stay at the Dream Suite is to win the chance.

Just getting to tour the Dream Suite was a huge stroke of luck -- and now, you could get lucky too!  For today only, Disney Parks is running a Limited Time Magic sweepstakes, and the prize is a tour of the Dream Suite!  Lucky winners will join a Walt Disney Imagineer in Disneyland Park at 10:00 AM on November 4,5,6,7 or 8, 2013.  There will be 25 winners per tour (125 total, just the winners, no guests!), and park tickets for the day are included.  I don't think travel to the Disneyland Resort or accommodations are included, but you should check the rules to be sure.

The sweepstakes ends TODAY, November 1, at 2:59 PM, so hurry and enter!! Not sure if you want to enter?  Check out my Dream Suite post and see all the magic that lies inside, and you'll definitely want the chance to see it yourself!!

Enter the Jif Most Creative Sandwich Contest for the chance to win a $20,000 college fund

I participated in a campaign on behalf of Mom Central Consulting (#MC) for Jif. I received a promotional item as a thank you for participating.

I pack sandwiches into my kids' school lunches almost every day.  Many of those sandwiches are PBJs -- peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.  My kids would probably eat PBJs every day, but I haven't dared to test that theory, because I don't want them to get sick of PBJ!  Fortunately, it's easy to get creative and put yummy twists on the classic PBJ to keep it fresh and tasty.  Here are some variations on the classic PBJ that my kids love:

* Use tortillas instead of sandwich bread, and make PBJ burritos.
* Use lavash bread instead of sandwich bread, then roll up and cut into PBJ pinwheels.
* Use cookie cutters to cut the sandwiches into fun shapes.
* Add sliced bananas, sliced strawberries, raisins or smashed-up blueberries.
* Add granola and/or shredded coconut.
* Use honey instead of jelly.
* Use hazelnut spread instead of jelly

Do you have a delicious twist on the PBJ?  Jif wants to know! They are running their Most Creative Sandwich Contest in search of a great original sandwich that includes two tablespoons of your favorite Jif products!  Parents and their children ages 6-12 will be competing to win a $25,000 college fund and a trip to New York City!

The photos in this post are finalist entries from last year.  Just looking at these yum-o creations makes my mouth water.  The contest ends on November 8, so hurry and enter!
