Introducing Blue Bunny Cadbury's Ice Cream Bars

There's a new heir to the throne of England, and everyone is celebrating!  The Royal Birth has been headline news for the past few days, and what better way to commemorate the occasion than with a proper English tea party?  MomSelect and Blue Bunny sent us a box of goodies to help me put together a fantastic spread for The Pea, 3Po, Jammy and their friends:

a tea set...

... some fancy hats and fascinators...

..... and the star of the show: samples of Blue Bunny's latest confection, Cadbury Ice Cream Bars!  Cadbury is probably the most well-known British chocolate brand; as such, it was the perfect addition to our tea party.  There are certain things that make an English tea party what it is, and having an authentic English brand such as Cadbury is one of them!

Blue Bunny's Cadbury ice cream bars feature low-fat ice cream smothered in rich, delicious Cadbury chocolate.  Varieties include English Toffee, Caramello, Royal Dark, Vanilla Chocolate, Double Chocolate, and Chocolate Almond (we received samples of the first 4).

All the guests at our tea party loved these ice cream bars.  While the ice cream was nice, the Cadbury chocolate was definitely the star of the show.  Alfie grew up eating Cadbury chocolate, and he has been pretty disappointed with the Cadbury chocolate here in the US.  It doesn't quite meet the standards of the Cadburychocolate in the UK.... but we all agreed that the Cadbury chocolate used in these ice cream bars is superb!  It's as smooth and creamy as the Cadbury chocolate in the UK.   Another great feature of these bars is their size -- they are smaller than the usual ice cream bar so you can control portions and calories and sugar.  Look out for Blue Bunny's Cadbury Ice Cream Bars in your supermarket freezer, they are absolutely gorgeous (that's English for yummy!!)

Check out more photos of our tea party:  we had ice cream....

Tea party food (clockwise, from top center): onion tarts, cucumber sandwiches, fairy cakes, peach tart, blueberry tart... and tea (or apple juice for the kids) in the center!

... more ice cream...

.... oh-so-proper badminton games....

... and more ice cream!

Disclosure: Thanks to Blue Bunny and MomSelect for providing Cadbury's ice cream bars and party favors for my tea party.The views and opinions expressed here are my own.

Buy tickets to Mickey's Halloween Party at the Disneyland Resort

Halloween Time at the Disneyland Resort

A friend of mine posted a photo on Facebook of some Halloween candles that she saw at a store recently.  Most people are outraged by the fact that Halloween products are already showing up in stores, but I don't mind at all because I love Halloween and I'm already looking forward to it.  In face, I mind seeing Back-to-School stuff a whole lot more, even though that's happening before Halloween! Of course we Halloween lovers need to prepare early!  That's probably why the Disneyland Resort has started to sell tickets for their annual Mickey's Halloween Party.  Fall and Halloween will be here before you know it, and you know the advice that everyone gives about a Disney vacation -- plan and prepare :)

I've wanted to attend Mickey's Halloween Party for a long time.  I love Halloween and I love Disneyland, so it's the perfect combination.  Mickey's Halloween Party has spooky surprises such as:

  • Disney characters in costume
  • A Halloween-themed parade
  • A Halloween-themed fireworks show
  • Halloween-themed entertainment
  • Healthy trick-or-treat stations

And lots more.  This year's party also has a new "Monsters U Dance Party", a family-friendly "frat party" at Tomorrowland Terrace!

Best of all, everyone is encouraged to come in costume.  Finally, a Halloween party where everyone is as enthusiastic about dressing up as I am! My fantasy is to dress the whole family up in Alice In Wonderland costumes:  Alfie as the Mad Hatter, The Pea as Alice, 3Po and Jammy as Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum.... and yours truly as the Queen of Hearts!  It would be absolutely perfect.  And if one of the kids or Alfie uses their veto option, we could go as the Incredibles family!

Even you don't go to the party, you should visit the Disneyland Resort in the fall. The whole resort is decked out in Halloween and fall-themed decorations, including Space Mountain and the Haunted Mansion, which have their very own Halloween makeovers.   The whole thing is absolutely beautiful.  The transformation to Halloween Time starts on September 13 (Friday the 13th!) and goes through October 31.

Mickey's Halloween Party will be held on 13 nights at the Disneyland Park.  You can get your Mickey’s Halloween Party tickets at Disneyland.com/Halloween! Tickets are on sale now for the following dates:

Friday, September 27;
Tuesday, October 1;
Friday, October 4;
Tuesday, October 8;
Friday, October 11;
Tuesday, October 15;
Friday, October 18;
Monday, October 21;
Wednesday, October 23;
Friday, October 25;
Monday, October 28;
Wednesday, October 30;
Thursday, October 31.

Disclosure: I have attended Disneyland Resort press events and blogger events in the past, but I was not requested nor required to write this post. The views and opinions expressed here are my own.

Trading in your old phone at a Best Buy Mobile store could get you up to $200!

This is a compensated post. The reviewer has been compensated in the form of a Best Buy Gift Card and/or received the product/service at a reduced price or for free

Ever heard the phrase "money doesn't grow on trees"?  You might not be able to find dollar bills in your back yard oak tree, but chances are you've got more than a couple of dollar bills stashed in your coat closet.  I'm not talking about the loose change you left in your gym bag three months ago, I'm talking about your used cell phones!  Did you know that you can trade your used cell phones in for a Best Buy gift certificate?  How cool is that? I had no idea you could do this, but it's true -- you can trade in your old phone and get up to $200 back at a Best Buy Mobile specialty store.

Finally, your old technology equipment doesn't have to be a hunk of junk any more!  I'm sure you have old cell phones lying around your house somewhere -- because you switch over to a new model as soon as the contract expires on your old phone!  Rather than pack your old phones in a box and dropping them off at the next free Electronics Recycling Day, take them in to Best Buy Mobile and get some money back.

Trading in your old phone couldn't be easier:

1) Check to see how much your old phone is worth at Best Buy's online trade-in site. The site calculates trade-in values for practically every phone in the market.  Older phones are worth less (Alfie's old HTC One was worth just over $1, and my old Samsung Reclaim wasn't worth anything!) while newer models can be worth up to $200!  My Samsung S2 was valued at $90 (the better the condition of the phone, the larger the trade-in-value) -- what a great way to get some extra cash since I'm in the market for a new phone anyway!

2) Take your old phone in to a Best Buy Mobile store. Make sure you take it to a Best Buy Mobile store, they do trade-ins every day!.  Make sure you take any accessories and peripherals that come with the phone, so you can get the maximum trade-in amount.

3)  You'll get a Best Buy gift card instantly -- that's it!  In my case, it was bye-bye old phone and hello Best Buy gift card :)

Now that' you've got some money to spend at Best Buy, what better way to spend it than on that new phone you've been eyeing?  My contract with Sprint reaches its 2-year anniversary in just a month, so I spent some time drooling over newer models like the Samsung S4 and iPhone 5.  The great thing about shopping for a new phone at Best Buy Mobile is that the staff doesn't work on commission, so they don't have to push one particular brand or carrier down your throat.  They can give honest opinions, assessments and comparisons about the various phones and carrier plans.

Disclosure: I am receiving a Best Buy gift card as compensation for this post. The views and opinions expressed here are my own.

CrispRoot Cassava Chips

I love the salty crunch of potato chips, but let's face it, with all the oil used to deep-fry them, they're not an everyday snack. Fortunately, there are healthier alternatives to a regular potato chip that still help ease that potato chip craving.  Time Magazine listed five potato chip alternatives-- sweet potato chips, apple chips, taro chips, kale chips, plantain chips and soy chips.  They forgot one more:  cassava chips!   Cassava is eaten all over Africa, South American and Asia, so I've had my share of cassava.  I've never really cared for it.... but then again, I've never had it sliced, fried and salted like CrispRoot makes theirs.   CrispRoot sent me samples of their cassava chips to try, and I have to say, I'm gaining a whole new appreciation for Cassava.

More about CrispRoot
CrispRoot Chips are made out of the root from the Cassava shrub (Manihoc esculenta), a plant native to South America that is also cultivated throughout Asia and Africa. Cassava -- also known as tapioca, manioc, and yuca -- grows year round in arid conditions and requires little water for cultivation, making it the ideal drought-tolerant, resource-conserving crop. As the primary energy source for over 800 million people around the world, Cassava root provides an incredibly healthy food that offers a tasty alternative to fatty, unnatural snack foods.

With 30-40% less fat and double the fiber of regular potato chips, CrispRoot Chips are made with all-natural ingredients. Made in four absolutely savory flavors, CrispRoot’s Original, Sea Salt, BBQ, and Ginger versions have a scrumptious ridged texture just like leading potato chips, but without the trans-fat or cholesterol. And just as CrispRoot Chips are healthy for the body, the company has ensured that their production is also healthy for the planet.

CrispRoot comes in 4 flavors -- Original, Sea Salt, Thai Ginger and BBQ Bliss -- and they sent me samples of the first three.  I really like the texture of the chips; they are slightly thicker than regular potato chips, with a ridged surface, nice and crunchy but not greasy at all.  My family was equally divided between the Original and Sea Salt flavors (I'm a Sea Salt gal, all the way!). The Thai Ginger is not a kid-friendly flavor; none of my kids liked it, and they have fairly adventurous palates.  Cassava is generally sweeter than potato, so I wasn't surprised that these chips are sweeter than potato chips.  What surprised me is how much healthier these chips are than regular potato chips:  30% less fat and double the fiber.  CrispRoot chips are also gluten and dairy free, so they're a great choice for accommodating food allergies and intolerance at a playdate or classroom party.

Disclosure: I received a product sample to facilitate my review, but have not been paid to review the product or give my opinions. Product information (in italics) is provided by the featured company/product. The views and opinions expressed here are my own.

Join the American Cancer Society's 3rd generation Cancer Prevention Study

When I was a little girl, cancer scared me.  My grandfather had died of cancer.  The word "cancer" was like a death sentence to me.  Thirty years later, we've made such great strides in the fight against cancer.  Although I still know way too many people who have lost the fight against the Big C, I know just as many people who have won.  Thanks to the efforts of organizations like the American Cancer Society, we know more about cancer that we ever did -- how to find it, how to treat it, how to beat it, how to prevent it.

But the fight's not over yet, and it will take more than dedicated scientists to win it.  It takes the efforts, small and large, of people like you and me. The wonderful Susan Niebur once wrote, "There are as many ways to fight cancer as there are types of cancer".  Ever the scientist, Susan summarized how you can help into 4 categories:  Donate.  Educate. Advocate. Volunteer. I love these categories because they pinpoint exactly what it is you can give:  Money.  Influence.  Passion.  And your time.

Between now and December, the American Cancer Society (ACS) is giving everyone a unique opportunity to volunteer -- by enrolling in their latest nationwide long-term research effort, the Cancer Research Study-3 (CPS-3). CPS-3 is a long-term study that seeks to better understand the factors (lifestyle, environmental, genetic) that cause or prevent cancer and ultimately help eliminate cancer as a major health concern for future generations.  This is the third such study that the ACS has conducted (hence the "3"); the first was started in 1952 and the second in 1982.  The results of such studies can be significant: CPS-1 provided researchers with the first evidence of the links between smoking and lung cancer, while CPS-2 demonstrated the impact of hormones, physical activity and diet on cancer risk.  Who knows what insights this latest study could provide?!

The CPS-3 study aims to enroll at least 300,000 adults from various racial and ethnic backgrounds from across the US by the end of 2013.  They already have 250,000 enrolled, but they need our help to recruit the last 50,000.  That's where you come in!  Here's how you can help:

1) If you're between the ages of 30 and 65 with no personal history of cancer, sign up for an initial appointment at various community centers and health centers across the country.

2) Read and sign an informed consent form (note: They will ask for the last 4 digits of your social security number, mainly to access health registries like the national death index just in case you stop participating in the study without informing them and they need to find you to confirm.  You actually do not need to enter it in order to continue, but 99.1 % of respondents do enter it).

3) Complete an online or paper survey about your lifestyle, physical traits, medical history and other factors related to your health. It will take approximately 45 minutes, and even if you complete the survey online, you don't have to complete it in one sitting.

4)  At your appointment, your waist circumference will be taken and a small amount of blood will be taken.  Like the survey, your blood sample will be used for research purposes only and all your information will remain confidential.

5)  Over the next 20 years, every 2 or 3 years, complete follow-up surveys to update your information.  These surveys will last anywhere from 5 minutes to 1 hour.

Enrollment is going on nationwide; use the CPS-3 location search tool to find a site by state or zip code.  If you live in the San Francisco Bay Area, you can head to a special CPS-3 site for the Bay Area, which lists enrollment sites by county.  The Bay Area is of particular interest because of its rich ethnic diversity; their goal is to get 4000 people to enroll, the largest in the nation!  Right now only 1400 have signed up for an appointment, so please consider signing up, and tell everyone you know.

As soon as I heard about the study, I knew I wanted to sign up.  I have an appointment in about a month, and because only a quarter or participants at this point are men, I've gotten Alfie to sign up too.  Bay Area signups will go on through August 2013.  As Nike says, JUST DO IT!  You can revoke consent and withdraw from the study at any time -- although few do.  Ninety percent of the participants from the 1982 study still return their questionnaires.  And why not?  It's not a huge time commitment, and you get the chance to be a part of something big. Something that  Something that could help your children, grandchildren and other loved ones in the future.

Disclosure: My participation in the ACS's awareness campaign for CPS-3 is compensated; however, my participation in the study, and my husband's participation, are entirely voluntary. The views and opinions expressed here are my own.

Giveaway: The benefits of washing your car at the carwash

With summer's hot temperatures, washing your car in your driveway sounds like the ideal way to cool down and save some money at the same time.  but before you grab that bucket and hose, think about what it's really costing you.  When you wash your car yourself, you use a LOT of water -- and  all that soapy water flows into storm drains and maybe even the ocean.  It's actually better to take your car to a professional car wash!  Many professional car washes treat and recycle their washing water, which helps \save water, protect aquatic life and preserve the environment.

WaterSavers®, a consumer awareness campaign from the International Carwash Association® (ICA), has some eye-opening information about the environmental benefits of washing your car at a professional carwash:

Whether a Saturday morning ritual or charity fundraiser, washing vehicles on driveways, parking lots and streets can do far more harm than good. That’s because the dirty water entering storm drains from pavement washing does not undergo treatment before it is discharged.

A study by the City of Federal Way, Wash., found that residential car washing led to numerous pollutants being released each year into their storm sewer system, including 190 gallons of gasoline, diesel and motor oil; 400 pounds of phosphorus and nitrogen; and 60 pounds of ammonia.

You may be surprised to learn that professional car washes are typically a much greener option for washing vehicles than washing your car in the driveway at home. Washing at home with a garden hose can use more than 60 gallons in as little as five minutes, but most professional car washes treat and recycle water, virtually eliminating waste. The average homeowner uses 116 gallons of water to wash a car, according to the Mid-America Regional Council, and most commercial car washes use 60 percent less water for the entire process than a homeowner uses just to rinse the car.

WaterSavers professional car washes use only 40 gallons or less of fresh water per car wash – that’s less than the typical home washing machine uses per load. The process cleans and re-uses the water for future car washes, or it undergoes treatment prior to returning it clean to the environment. For more information and to find a certified location near you, visit WashWithWaterSavers.com

A car wash can cost as little as $5 for a basic run-through service; with a coupon, I pay just $13 for a wash and wax plus interior vacuum and dusting!  It saves time, hassle and the environment!

One lucky Bonggamom Finds reader will receive a special WaterSavers prize package which includes:

Palmolive Soft Touch Aloe Review and Giveaway

I received a sample for review

Do you hate dishpan hands?  Are you tired of getting dry, cracked skin from too much dishwashing?  Palmolive's new Soft Touch dish liquids are infused with moisturizing ingredients you know and love.  Last month I tried Palmolive Soft Touch with Vitamin E, and this month I'm trying Palmolive Soft Touch with Aloe.  Unlike Palmolive Soft Touch with Vitamin E, which looks and feels like a moisturing lotion, Palmolive Soft Touch with Aloe looks and feels more like a cooling aloe gel.  It works great on my dishes and my hands never feel tight and dry after using it.  I would have preferred an unscented variety, the scent (more floral than aloe) is pleasant enough.  Plus, it goes so well with my new bottle of green nail polish :)

Here's more information about Palmolive Soft Touch:
Specially formulated to be gentle on hands.  With a touch of aloe, this formula is dermatologist-tested to be gentle on sensitive skin.

* Formulated with a touch of Aloe
* Designed for dry skin
* Cleans to a sparkling shine

Keep reading and learning throughout the summer with PBS KIDS

Now that summer is in full swing, you may already be tearing your hair out over wondering how to keep your kids entertained and keep their brains from turning into mush. Research does show that students experience significant learning loss when they do not participate in educational activities during the summer months, so I try to maintain an educational focus throughout the summer.  No, they're not doing homework, but I do ask them to read every day and practice their musical instruments, and I encourage them to visit educational online sites like Khan Academy.  Educational TV programs on the Discovery Channel, NatGeo channel and PBS Kids are always allowed!

Speaking of PBS Kids, they are a wonderful resource for educational summer activities.  They have all kinds of downloadable activity guides and printables to help keep your child reading all summer long.  What's really nice is that many of the activities tie in with PBS Kids TV shows that your child already watches and enjoys.  One memorable summer when 3Po and Jammy were 5, I held a Super WHY reading "camp" to help them progress from sounding out 3-letter words to reading 4-letter words and words with consonant blends.  They loved Super WHY, so they had so much fun, and their reading skills really improved!

With the tips and activities found on PBS Kids Parents website, you can easily put together your own "summer camp" at home.  PBS Kids has also partnered with Education.com to provide more resources for DIY home camp activities at www.education.com/read. Your "camp" can go on for multiple weeks, with different themes each week!  If you're at a loss for camp themes, just check your local PBS Kids station, because PBS KIDS is showing episodes from a different PBS Kids TV series each week, all summer long.  Each week has its own theme, so you can tailor your "camp"'s activities to fit the theme:

• DANIEL TIGER’S NEIGHBORHOOD – “Let’s Play Outside Week,” July 15
• THE CAT IN THE HAT KNOWS A LOT ABOUT THAT! – “Let’s Get Wet Week,” starting July 22
• ARTHUR – “Sports Week,” starting July 29
• WORDGIRL® – “What’s Up With WordGirl Week,” starting August 5

How Galileo makes summer camp fun and easy for PARENTS

There is no doubt that kids LOVE Galileo camps.  Just ask any kid who has attended one!  There's just something magical about the combination of amazing staff, cool (and ever-changing) themes, zany camp traditions, fun activities and a challenging curriculum that makes kids THINK.

My kids always look forward to their week(s) at Galileo. But they're not the only ones -- I look forward to it just as much as they do!  And it's not just because I love seeing how much they enjoy themselves.  It's also because Galileo Learning does so much to make things stress free and hassle free for parents, so they can enjoy their week as well.  Here are some ways Galileo helps parents out:

1) Check-in is quick and easy at Galileo summer camps; the staff is so efficient that after the first day, they only need 10 minutes to check in all the campers! There are about half a dozen check-in stations (arranged alphabetically at Camp Galileo and by major at Galileo Summer Quest).  Additionally, certain locations allow curbside check-in: just pull up to the curb, kiss your camper good-bye, watch him run to his counselor to pick up his daily name tag, wave and drive off!

2) At Galileo Summer Quest, parents have the option to authorize their children to check themselves out.  This means your middle school child can bike to GSQ in the morning, and bike back home when camp ends.   Obviously not everyone will be comfortable with that, but many kids already bike themselves to and from school during the schoolyear, so why should the summer be any different? I for one am glad that GSQ gives parents that option.

3)  Both Camp Galileo and Galileo Summer Quest offer a hot lunch option via Choicelunch.  You sign up for the week, and your camper gets a morning, a lunch entrée, a healthy snack and fresh-cut fruit. There are at least 5 lunch entrées to choose from every day, all kid-friendly options like Annie’s Organic mac and cheese, california roll, shredded beef tacos and Caesar salad.

4)  Parents get regular updates on what their campers are doing.  On the first day you'll receive a sheet with staff bios, as well as a list of activities your camper will be enjoying throughout the week.  The list includes information about special theme days (water play day, superhero day, etc...) so you and your camper can plan ahead and join in the fun.  When I pick my boys up from Camp Galileo, the staff always gives me a "what we did today" sheet with personalized notes about how they did.  I LOVE this, because all too often, when I ask them "How was your day?", all I get is an "Ummm... it was okay".  Galileo has figured out how to give parents a "cheat sheet" so they can ask their kids specific questions about their day ("how did you figure out where to put the drive train on your Mars rover?")!!

5) I can't say enough about Galileo's extended hours!   You can sign your child up for AM before-care sessions or PM aftercare sessions or both.  It's not just a blessing for working parents, it's also a blessing for stay-at-home parents who have kids at camps in different locations that end at the same time, or parents who want to spend some one-on-one time with one child (trust me, I have 3 kids and it is wonderful!).  My kids have been to the extended hours sessions at both Galileo Summer Quest and Camp Galileo, and they give high marks to both programs.  Kids aren't just left to themselves -- the staff stays and plays with them, making sure everyone has a good time and no-one gets bored.  This week at aftercare, my boys have played with LEGOs and KNEX, had their faces painted, made lanyards and played basketball.  It sure beats going to the supermarket and the bank with mom!

Disclosure: This is part of a series of posts about Camp Galileo and Galileo Summer Quest, for which I am receiving a free week of camp for each of my children. The views and opinions expressed here are my own.
