What to expect at a Galileo Camp

The week my kids have been waiting has arrived... it's Galileo Week!  3Po and Jammy will have an out-of-this-world week at Camp Galileo, because this week's theme is Space Odyssey, and Galileo has partnered with the Chabot Space & Science Center to design a week of activities that's absolutely stellar.  They've already started drawing aliens for their art sessions and begun construction of a Mars Rover in their science sessions.  As for The Pea, she's living out her Food Network fantasies at Galileo Summer Quest -- she chose a Culinary Arts major called Chefology: Just Desserts, so she'll be whipping up sweet treats all week.  There's so much creativity and learning in store for all three of them!

My kids have been to many Galileo camps over the years, so they're Galileo veterans, but if your child is starting his very first week at a Galileo camp, he or she may be unsure of what to expect -- as will you, the parent!

1)  On Day 1, Monday, try to arrive at least 15 minutes before the start of camp.  To make sure camp starts on time, the Monday check-in tables usually open 30 minutes before camp start time. First-day check-in usually takes a bit longer because the staff needs time to look your camper's name up, hand you an information packet, and answer any questions you might have.  Don't be afraid to ask questions or let the staff know of any specific needs or preferences your child might have!

Check-in tables at Camp Galileo are arranged alphabetically by last name, and check-in tables at Galileo Summer Quest are arranged by majors.  And don't worry if there are other camps being held in the same location as your child's Galileo camp -- the Galileo staff always puts up tons of big, bright, colorful signs so you won't get lost!  Check in on Day 2 and all succeeding days starts 10 minutes before camp start time.

2) After you check in, it's time to say goodbye to your camper.  A Galileo staffer will escort your child to his or her classroom.  The staffers always make it a fun event by leading groups of kids through the Fun Machine (a curtain of crepe paper and ribbons), so your child won't have time to miss you or feel left out.

3) The information sheet handed to you on Day 1 of camp contains important contact information including the Camp Director's name, camp phone number, your child's Team Leader, Team Color and check-out location.  It also contains the location of the Camp Galileo Office, the classrooms Camp Galileo will be occupying throughout the week, Outdoor Activities and the Lost & Found.  If you need to take your child out of camp early or just need to drop off the lunch that you forgot to pack, you can head to the Camp Galileo Office.

4)  When camp ends, you will need to check your camper out (unless you have authorized self-checkout for your camper, an option only available at Galileo Summer Quest).  Make sure you or whoever you have authorized to pick up your camper brings a driver's license or other official ID.

5) Don't forget to send your child to camp with sunscreen already applied, as well as a bottle of water.

6) Many days at camp are theme days -- spirit day, superhero day, 60's day, water day, etc... Campers show up dressed for the day's theme, and everyone has a lot of fun.  Make sure you read the "Week at Camp" info sheet so you can help your camper prepare for each day!

And finally.....

7) Relax.  Your camper will have a GREAT week.  After you pick your camper up, be prepared for excited and incoherent rambling as he attempts to describe what went on at camp.  I always find myself looking forward to hearing about all the amazing, cool, epic, fun, awesome activities that transpired!

Disclosure: Disclosure:This is the third in a series of posts about Camp Galileo and Galileo Summer Quest, for which I am receiving a free week of camp for each of my children. The views and opinions expressed here are my own.

Giveaway: America is your Park

One of the things I love most about summertime is that it's so easy to stay active.  I always seem to be extra busy in the fall and spring, and I'm too much of a coward to brave the cold and the rain to get outdoors -- but in the summer, we're pretty much assured of sunshine (at least we are here in NorCal!), and with the kids' summer schedule, everyone is relaxed and happy so it's easy to get everyone outdoors to play in our local park.  There are just so many things to do at a park!  Here are some of our favorite activities at local or national parks:

... kayaking (yes, beaches and lakes can be parks too!)...

.... hiking/walking/jogging.....

... tossing a ball...
Owly Images

... even something as simple as jumping rope on your front lawn can be a lot of fun!

Now that summertime is here, Coca-Cola is issuing a challenge to all Americans. They're asking people to “Take It to the Park,” get active and vote for your favorite park to win $100,000 as part of the America Is Your Park campaign.  There's just one week left to vote so head over to the Take it to the Park page on Coca-Cola's Live Positively website!   You get one vote per day --- but you can earn even more votes if you check in at your favorite park via Foursquare (5 extra votes!), or log 20 minutes of activity via MapMyFitness (10 extra votes!).  In addition, on the last weekend of voting, July 13 and 14, you get Double Votes!

Snap a photo and win a tour with San Francisco Ride the Ducks

San Francisco is certainly no stranger to the wild and wacky.... but what about the quacky?  Amidst the cable cars and the segway scooters and the little yellow GPS tour cars travels a truly strange vehicle:  Ride the Ducks Tours' DUKW amphibious vehicle!  Capable of traveling over both land and sea, it's 50% tour bus, 50% tour boat, and 100% fun.  This is what it looks like on water...

.... and this is what it looks like on land:

If you've spent time in San Francisco, you may have seen it -- and if you haven't, you'd better start looking for it, because if you snap a photo of Ride The Ducks tour vehicle and post it to facebook.com/SanFranciscoDucks, you'll be entered to win a free Ride The Ducks tour for you and a friend!

The kids and I will be taking a tour courtesy of Ride The Ducks San Francisco -- we can't wait!  Stay tuned for a recap of our Ride The Ducks Tour, and good luck finding their seriously quacky vehicle on the streets of San Francisco!

Whole Foods launches new Blueberry Peach Upside-Down Cake

I received a sample to review

Need a last minute dessert for your 4th of July or summer picnic?  With Whole Foods' new Blueberry Peach Upside-Down Cake, you get to celebrate the red, white and blue(berry) without ever having to turn on your oven! Whole Foods sent us a sample of their latest baked delight, and it certainly turned our world upside down :)

This cake is about 6" in diameter and just over 2" in height.  It slices into 4 very generous servings, 6 "just right" servings or 8 "sensible" servings.  Like any upside down cake, it sits somewhat lopsided on its cake plate liner because the bottom is actually the top, and it rose unevenly.  I'm happy that Whole Foods bakery didn't slice off the bottom to make it sit perfectly straight, because like a muffin top, that's the best part!

You can't tell from the price (just $6.99), but it's made with seriously high-quality ingredients:  whole wheat and almond flour, olive oil, greek yogurt and fresh, seasonal fruit.  The yogurt and oil keep the cake super moist, and you couldn't ask for a better combination of fruit -- blueberries and peaches, which are at their sweetest and freshest right now!

I highly recommend serving this cake with fresh blueberries and peaches (and if you're feeling naughty, some whipped cream or vanilla ice cream).  Of course, it's perfectly yummy on its own -- the fruit topping and glaze give it enough sweetness to let your tummy know that dessert is served.  What a sweet way to celebrate summer!

Cotton Candy Cutesies: a sweet new doll from Playdin

I received a product sample for review

Remember Troll dolls?  I used to love stroking and playing with their wispy-fine hair, but I was never a big fan of the troll look.  I much, much, much prefer the adorable look of Playdin's new Cotton Candy Cutesies, a line of soft with wispy hair that looks just like cotton candy.  Each cutesie has its own distinct look and personality based on kids' favorite flavors, and they're priced at $13.99 so kids can work towards collecting all flavors, I mean dolls :)

We received Frozen Limeade to review, and although she's not lime-scented as I had hoped she would be, The Pea thinks she's adorable -- sweet and sassy and a bit tart, just like limeade should be.  Her hair is bright yellow and so much fun to style, and I love the little pink drink umbrella in her hair.

There are a total of 11 Cotton Candy Cutesies, each, based on a flavor: A La Mode, Frozen Limeade, Bubble Gum, Hot Cinnamon, Licorice, Birthday Cake, Pink Lemonade, Red Velvet Cupcake, Watermelon, Orange Cream Soda and Rainbow Cookie.  They all look as sweet and scrumptious as they sound; the only thing that would make them even better would be if they were actually scented to their flavor.

Cotton Candy Cutesies ($13.99) are available at www.Playdin.com and www.amazon.com.  What an easy (and sugar-free) way for your child to enjoy a sweet treat this summer!

Zip-Itz: fun new dolls from Playdin

I received a sample for review

Children are hoarders by nature.  When they see something they want, their instinct is to squirrel it away.  Whenever we go out for a walk, you can bet my kids' pockets will end up with a stone, a seed or some other treasure.  I can't tell you how many times I've pulled out melted crayon stubs and little toys from the dryer!

This summer your kids will have an extra-special friend to celebrate all their little treasures:  Zip-Itz toys from Playdin, a line of plush cuties with zippers and pockets all over their bodies where kids can stash their trinkets.  Each Zip-Itz character is unique, with its own personality and history.  They're all the product of one misfortune or other at the Zany Zipper Factory (the wallet assembly line, purse assembly line, etc...) and I think kids will love finding out how their Zip-Itz friends came to be, and how their backstories influenced their characters.

We received Zack Zip-Itz to review, and although I assumed from the name that Zack is a boy, Zack is a medley of pinks and purples and blues and yellows, so he/she looks more like a "he" to me!  The line does seem more geared towards girls, for parents who care about that sort of thing, there are a few others with more "boyish" color-palettes, like Zee....

... Zeke...

... and Zanta (he's a limited edition, holiday-themed Zip-It!)

"Girly" Zip-Itz include Zoey....

.. and Zinderella (another Deluxe Zip-Itz)

There are also pillow Zip-Itz and mini Zip-Itz!  Zip-Itz range from $6.99 to $29.99 and are available at www.Playdin.com and www.amazon.com.

Exclusive Peek: The official trailer of Vince Vaughn's Delivery Man debuts today!

I'm a firm believer that families come in all shapes, colors and sizes.  This November, the Vince Vaughn film, Delivery Man, is sure to give everyone a second to think about what it means to be a family, no matter how unconventional.  So far, all we've seen to whet our appetites for the movie is a teaser trailer that hardly gives anything beyond what we already know:  that Vince Vaughn plays a guy who finds out he has fathered 533 children via sperm bank donations, and some of them want to meet him.  Well, we want to meet him too!

Whether those kids get their wish remains to be seen, but Vince Vaughn fans will get their wish today, because Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures is debuting Delivery Man's official trailer today.... and get this -- they are only releasing it to 533 bloggers who will be debuting the trailer exclusively on their sites!   Even more exciting news... I'm proud to be one of those 533 bloggers who get to debut the trailer online!   So without further ado, here's the official trailer of Delivery Man:

Delivery Man opens in theatres everywhere on November 22, 2013.  I always enjoy anything to do with Disney, and I love Vince Vaughn, so I wanted to watch the movie anyway -- but after watching the trailer I want to watch it even more.  It looks like the kind of movie that's going to make me laugh and cry -- and those kinds of movies are the ones I love the most.  I have high hopes that this film is going to, um, deliver!

Hear the whole picture with Dolby Atmos

I've always known that watching a movie in a movie theater gives you a better experience than watching the same movie at home, whether it's your home theater system or a plain old tv or your laptop, tablet or phone.  But I never really knew how much better it could be until I was invited by Dolby Labs to watch the movie Monsters University in a special screening room wired with their latest surround sound technology, Dolby Atmos.  I had already watched Monsters University twice before, but I was unprepared by how much difference superior sound technology can make!

The Dolby Screening Room is located at Dolby Labs in San Francisco.  It looks like a small, luxurious theatre, the kind a millionaire might have somewhere in his mansion, with comfy chairs, upholstered walls and fancy light fixtures.

But this is no ordinary theatre.  This screening room is where Dolby does their testing, and right now it's wired up with Dolby's latest and greatest sound technology, the Dolby Atmos system.  Each wall panel opens up to reveal high tech speakers with padded backings.  The screening room itself is build independently of the building that surrounds it, so the vibrations of the building have no effect on the theater.  Dolby's researchers can move sound anywhere they want throughout the theatre, so they can make this room sound like any room they want -- from a regular movie theater to a high domed cathedral.  The San Francisco Symphony has recorded in this very room!  I felt quite privileged to be there.

Before the film started we had the chance to meet the two me behind the final soundtrack for Monsters University, Gary Summers and Michael Semanick.  Much like Dolby Atmos, Gary and Michael are part of soundtrack royalty. They have worked on films like Titanic, Jurassic Park, Avatar, Star Wars VI, the Lord of the Rings, Alice in Wonderland, Cars, Toy Story 1 & 2, Ratatouille,  WALL-E and Monsters Inc.  Between the two of them, they have 17 Academy Award nominations and 6 wins -- so when they say Dolby Atmos is a cool technology, you'd better believe it.

Gary and Michael talked about how they created the final soundtrack for the movie -- putting together the dialogue, sound effects and music.  I was impressed at how detail oriented sound engineers have to be -- they even went to Berkeley and other college campuses to record the sounds they heard on campus!  I had already watched Monsters University twice before my visit to Dolby, and I never noticed that before... but according to Gary and Michael, that means they've done their job.  The sound effects aren't supposed to stand out, they're supposed to draw you in and contribute to the feeling of actually being a part of the action.

That immersive experience, according to Gary and Michael, is actually one of the best things about using Dolby Atmos technology.  With Dolby Atmos, they were able to specify exactly where in the theater the sound comes from, and how it moves across the theater as the object associated with the sound moves across the screen!  Unlike previous surround sound technologies like Dolby Surround 5.1 or 7.1, Dolby Atmos does not tie sound to channels (5.1 splits theaters into 2 sections and 7.1 splits theaters into 4). Instead, sound is tied to the object, so engineers can be extremely precise about sound locations, with sound traveling from one speaker to the next.  Theaters wired for Dolby Atmos even have overhead surround, so you are really immersed in the sound, and in the story.

Sure enough, watching Monsters University with Dolby Atmos was a completely different experience. (spoiler alert: this next section contains descriptions of scenes from the movie!).  Every time objects fly across or around the screen -- the 2-headed pigeon, Dean Hardscrabble, glowing urchin bombs, the scream can that Sulley and Mike broke -- you can hear the sound following the object from the back of the room to the front, from side to side, wherever it goes.  When large monsters go thudding across the screen, you can actually feel the room vibrate, as you would if you were actually standing in the Monsters University campus.  When the monsters enter a sewer for the first challenge of the Scare Games, you can hear the echoes of monsters cries and banging pipes.  It really does make for a richer, more immersive experience.  It's amazing how sound can pull viewers into the story!

If you ever get the chance to experience Dolby Atmos sound, I highly recommend it.  Check the Dolby website for a list of Dolby Atmos theaters near you, as well as a list of movies mixed with Dolby Atmos sound.

Yogurtland introduces Looney Tunes inspired flavors {Giveaway}

I received a Yogurtland gift card

When it comes to frozen yogurt, I generally prefer the plain tart flavor -- why mess with perfection?  But over the last couple of years, my favorite froyo joint, Yogurtland, has been introducing some flavors that are just too good to resist -- Dulce de Licious, Orangesicle, and Blue Lychee Bliss to be precise.

Next week Yogurtland will be introducing a new set of flavors that are sure to drive me looney -- Looney Tunes, that is!  Their six new flavors are inspired by Looney Tunes characters Bugs, Daffy, Road Runner, Tweety, Marvin and Taz.  Here's a rundown of the new flavors:

• Yogurtland’s new Carrot Cake frozen yogurt blends real carrots, hand-selected spices and cream cheese frosting for a taste that will have fans saying, “What’s up, Doc!” Bugs Bunny would be the first in line to fill his cup with shredded carrots, Yogurtland’s first vegetable topping.

• Inspired by Daffy Duck, Decadent Dark Chocolate Orange frozen yogurt blends premium cocoa with a light natural orange finish for a flavor that’s so decadent it’s deth-picable! Top it off with dark chocolate, orange-covered cranberries.

• The best thing since the illudium Q-36 space modulator, Kosmic Fruit Kaboom Sorbet is out-of-this world delicious with pineapple, lime, banana and a secret ingredient – spinach. Need more Kaboom? Top if off with Pop Rocks for an added explosion of flavor. (59-cents per individual packet)

• On the delicate side, Lemon Cream Cookie frozen yogurt is a tasty “tweat” even Tweety Bird would “twy.” Made with real cookies and lemon, this flavor will make putty tats jealous.

• Inspired by Road Runner, Cactus Berry Tart combines real cactus pear with Northwest marion blackberries, blueberries, and red raspberries for a light tart taste guaranteed to cool down even the hottest day in the desert. “Beep! Beep!”

• Taz would chew his way through anything to get to Yogurtland’s Devil’s Food Cake frozen yogurt. Top it off this untamed chocolate deliciousness with shaved curls of dark chocolate that will leave taste buds swirling.

I'm already drooling over the thought of Decadent Dark Chocolate Orange.  Actually, I can't wait to try all the new flavors!

Each character will have their own collectible spoon and cup, and Yogurtland is offering a new line of co-branded merchandise including notepads, pencils, key chains and melamine bowls, while supplies last.

The promotion kicks off July 8 with character appearances, prizes, and free yogurt parties at select Yogurtland locations. The flavors will be in Yogurtland stores from July 8 till September 15, so make sure you try them all!
