Savvy Online Shopping with American Express

Have you made an online purchase that you regret? Tell us about it, and you could win $250 worth of merchandise and gift cards from American Express! That should go a long way towards making up for your mistake, so keep reading to find out how to enter.....

I love online shopping. You just can't beat the variety, the prices and the convenience. As recently as twenty years ago, who would have thought that you could enter the world's largest department store just by turning on your computer, then buy anything and have it delivered straight to your home with a mere click of a button!

Of course, it's important to remember that as simple as it is to shop online, you're still spending your real, hard-earned money. And just like you would guard your wallet in a department store, you need to be safe and savvy when you shop online.

To help educate shoppers about making smart online shopping choices, I'm joining American Express in an Online Savvy Shopper series of posts. For starters, I'm sharing one of my online shopping mistakes below, and reflecting on what I could have done to avoid it:

Be familiar with the site's return policy
Last summer I bought a pair of sheepskin boots online. Since the weather had not yet grown cooler when they arrived, I tried them on once and stashed them in my closet. Once fall had arrived, I started wearing them -- but it only took a couple of uses for me to realize that I should have ordered a size up, because every time I wore them, the boots rubbed my heels raw. Unfortunately, the return period had already expired, so I was stuck with them. Now I have to wear them with socks. I should have made sure they fit properly before the return period was up -- or paid for them with an American Express card, which lets cardmembers return items even though the merchant's return policy has expired (up to $300, up to 90 days).

Buy from a site you know and trust
In hindsight, I should have bought those boots from Zappos or one of my regular online shoe sites with free shipping and returns and a 365-day return policy. I was drawn in by the lower price -- so instead of spending $20 more from an online store with a good reputation, I've wasted $120 on boots that don't fit!

Use a credit card, not a debit card, when making purchases online.
The worst kind of online shopping mistake is the kind you didn't even make. Hackers steal credit and debit card information all the time -- but debit cards don't offer purchase protection. Fortunately I've never had to learn this lesson the hard way, since I always use a credit card when shopping online. I've had to report fraudulent online charges several times -- for a subscription to a "How to Make Money From Home" website, for domain name registration, even for online gaming! -- but since the hackers used my credit card, I was able to get the purchases taken off my bill.

Next week I'll be posting about my Top 5 Fall Must-Haves, and sharing more savvy online shopping tips so that my fall shopping experiences stay fab and fun, not frightful. The week after, I'll be posting about my readers' top online shopping mistakes -- so please leave a comment below with your own mistakes! Don't be shy, we've all made them. Need an extra incentive to share yours stories of shame? How about the chance to win $250 from American Express?

Halloween DVDs from NCircle Entertainment

Watching Halloween specials on tv is a great way to get into the Halloween spirit, and they're a great way to celebrate Halloween without all the sugary treats. Here are two DVDs from NCircle Entertainment that your child will enjoy:

Kooky Spooky Halloween
The WordFriends get their share of scares the night before Halloween, when Pig sleep walks and everyone thinks he's a ghost! Then, Sheep is making herself a super special fairy costume to wear for the big Halloween party. But what will she do when her WordFriends need pieces of her costume for their own use?

This DVD has two episodes, A Kooky Spooky Halloween and Sheep's Halloween Costume. My kids love how the WordFriends' bodies spell out their names -- the Halloween pumpkins were especially cute!

Tricks and Treats Synopsis
A new spooky adventure this DVD brings, with The Cat, Nick and Sally, Fish and the Things. Meet the eeriest critters you have ever seen, arrived just in time for this Halloween! There'll be lots of tricks and, of course lots of treats, to share with the animal friends you will meet! There's a coconut crab, spider monkeys and bats, and plenty more fun with The Cat in the Hat!
This DVD contains several mini episodes, including Batty for Bats, Aye Aye! and of course Trick or Treat. I like that kids get to learn a few science facts, and the kids love seeing the Cat getting up to his old tricks.

I like that the DVDs are only 30 minutes each, so I can control the amount of tv the kids watch. They're a lot of fun, at at just $6.99 each, they're super affordable. Kooky Spooky and Tricks and Treats will make a great addition to any DVD collection -- so treat your kids to these fun DVDs and get ready to howl with delight!

Kooky Spooky and Tricks & Treats can be found at local retailers or online, including at www.NcircleEntertainment.com. Other Halloween DVDs from NCircle Entertainment include Archie, Richard Scarry's Huckle the Cat and Sabrina the Teenage Witch.

Win it!
One lucky Bonggamom Finds reader will receive a copy of Kooky Spooky and Tricks & Treats.

Halloween Costumes from Pottery Barn Teen

Alfie has dressed up as a pirate for Halloween for about four years straight, so it was high time to give him a new look this year. The problem is, Alfie is not really into Halloween. He only dresses us for the kids and for me. To earn his approval, a Halloween costume has to be cool enough to be worth the bother of dressing up into, or easy enough to whip on and off so it doesn't really matter.

Fortunately, Pottery Barn Teen's Halloween costumes are both. I love Pottery Barn Kids' Halloween costumes, but I didn't even realize that Pottery Barn Teen had costumes for teens until they offered to send us one to review. Well, they do, and just like the kids' line, the teens costumes all have a whimsical, nostalgic, high-quality look about them. Teens can be a doughnut, hotdog, mad scientist, gnome and more. Finally, a line of costumes for teens that don't focus on the scary or slutty! What's more, all of them are easy to take off and put on, so teens can take them off easily, once they're done with dress-up and want to be teens again. My favorite was the werewolf costume, so we ordered it, and just like that, Alfie has found his costume for Halloween!

The costume is simple, just a headpiece and gloves, but it's really all you need. Werewolves do wear human clothing, after all! The fur is nice and lush, but since the hat and gloves are lined, they don't itch at all. Alfie can keep his costume on for the photos, then take it off anytime he wants (or keep it on to stay warm while we're trick or treating). Easy on, easy off -- check!

We all love Alfie's new werewolf costume (cool costume -- double check!), so we all got a turn pretending to be werewolves:

The werewolf paws slip on like fingerless gloves, so you can still use your hands with them on, instead of having to take them off for every little task.

It's a one-size-fits-all costume, so even though it's Pottery Barn Teen, people of all ages can wear it.

I love this photo -- I think Jammy looks like a fierce little bear. The ears are a bit long, so it's easy to mistake the werewolf costume for a bear costume, so Alfie is going to wear a plaid shirt, puffy vest and jeans so he looks like Michael J. Fox's Teenage Werewolf. This is the closest he's ever going to get to looking like a teenager again, so he'd better enjoy it while it lasts!

Meet Marie-Grace

Last week I introduced you to The Pea's new American Girl doll, Cecile. This week, meet her "partner in crime", Marie-Grace Gardner.

Marie-Grace Gardner has just arrived in New Orleans, and she hopes she never has to move again. The lively city is unlike any other place Marie-Grace has lived. When she meets Mademoiselle Océane, a talented opera singer, Marie-Grace longs to take lessons. She loves to sing, and she would like to get to know Cécile Rey, the confident girl who is Mademoiselle's student. But Marie-Grace is shy, and starting school reminds her how hard it is to make friends and fit in. Can an unexpected adventure help her feel as if she belongs in New Orleans? Includes an illustrated "Looking Back" essay about the history of New Orleans. Author: Sarah Masters Buckey. Paperback. 120 pages.

First in a series of six books filled with inspiring lessons of compassion, courage, and friendship. Marie-Grace's and Cécile's stories, which are woven together in one six-book series and written by two different authors, include Meet Marie-Grace, Meet Cécile, Marie-Grace and the Orphans, Troubles for Cécile, Marie-Grace Makes a Difference, and Cécile's Gift.

Cecile and Marie-Grace are unique among American Girl dolls because they share a book series, unlike the other American Girl dolls who each star in their own book series and sometimes have a best friend with a book or two of her own. I like having them share the series, because to me it reinforces one of the series' underlying themes of equality amid diversity of culture, color and class.

I really like Marie-Grace's character: she's shy and quiet, yet independent and caring. Her story and Cecile's story are a great inspiration and example for The Pea and other real-life American Girls!

Here are some close-up photos of the Marie-Grace doll:

Last week I blogged that I preferred the Cecile doll's face to Cecile's face in the books; with Marie-Grace, the opposite is true. Maybe it's because of her hairstyle. I don't think this hairstyle flatters Marie-Grace (or any girl) at all. The front is slicked down way too tightly, of the curls on the side of her head that hang down like sideburns on a mullet. I'm hoping The Pea changes Marie-Grace's hairstyle, because she really does have a small, sweet face.

I do, however, really like the way her hair is half-braided, with the two braids tied together at the back. And I like her long, thick hair.

Her pantalettes are also really pretty, with their triangular, rick-rack trim, and her two-tone boots remind me of Mary Poppins.

Marie-Grace's dress wears a serviceable pink plaid cotton frock, much less luxurious than Cecile's dress, which is consistent with the girls' economic situations in the story. There are slight differences between the doll dress and the dress in the book illustrations. In the book, Marie-Grace appears to be wearing some kind of ruched pink vest (or gathered pink trim), while the Marie-Grace doll has a flat pink trim running down both sides of her dress, with white lace detailing. I love the flowing pink ribbons on Marie-Grace's hat, but it doesn't come with the doll (you need to purchase Marie Grace's accessories to get the hat).

Pink Ribbon UGGs

I don't own a pair of UGGs; they're expensive enough that I can find a number of excuses not to buy them: they'd make my feet sweat, they'll look awful on my huge feet, they might be so comfy that I'll end up wearing them all winter and forgo all fashion sense.

But these new Pink Ribbon UGGs might be enough to make me open up my pocketbook and splurge on a pair. The chestnut ones have a small pink ribbon on one side, as do the pink ones. I'm not so keen on the pink boots, but I'd consider buying the Ainsley slippers.

The Pink Ribbon UGGs are available exclusively through The Walking Shop, which also has exclusive Pink Ribbon items from Dansko, ECCO, Aetrex and ABEO. Sales of these products will support national and local charities in the fight against breast cancer and other women’s cancers through their Walking For Hope program.

Disclosure:I did not review this product. I received no samples or compensation for this post . The views and opinions expressed here are my own.

Free Halloween Pancakes at IHOP

No matter how old my kids get, they never seem to tire of smiley-face pancakes. They love the ones at IHOP, and this month they're going to love IHOP's Funny Face Pancakes even more. Throughout October, IHOP will be serving Count Spatula Scary Face pancakes instead. You still get the regular whipped topping mouth and strawberry nose, but you also get two mini Oreo cookies and candy corn on the side to decorate the pancake face with. And on October 28, kids 12 and under get an IHOP Count Spatula Scary Face pancake for free! Now that's one yummy treat the kids would love to sink their teeth into.

Real Steel movie giveaway

Action movie fans, take note: Real Steel is opening in theatres on October 7! I wasn't able to attend the press screening last night, so I guess I'll have to wait until Friday like everyone else.

An action ride set in the near-future where the sport of boxing has gone high-tech, “Real Steel” stars Hugh Jackman as Charlie Kenton, a washed-up fighter who lost his chance at a title when 2000-pound, 8-foot-tall steel robots took over the ring. Now nothing but a small-time promoter, Charlie earns just enough money piecing together low-end bots from scrap metal to get from one underground boxing venue to the next. When Charlie hits rock bottom, he reluctantly teams up with his estranged son Max (Dakota Goyo) to build and train a championship contender. As the stakes in the no-holds-barred arena are raised, Charlie and Max, against all odds, get one last shot at a comeback.

Win a Real Steel Movie prize pack
One lucky Bonggamom Finds winner will receive a Real Steel prize pack from DreamWorks, which consists of:

The Gallery Collection holiday cards review and giveaway

It seems strange to be blogging about holiday cards while we're still in the midst of all the pumpkins and candy apples, but pretty soon we'll be awash in holiday activities, so now is the time to get started on designing and ordering your holiday cards. We've already had our holiday photos taken because I'm determined to get our cards done early this year! I was thrilled when The Gallery Collection invited me to review their collection of holiday cards -- keep reading to find out what I thought (and enter to win some cards of your own!)

The Basics

About The Gallery Collection
The Gallery Collection is the leading business-to-business publisher of premium quality Business Christmas Cards, Christmas Cards and All Occasion greeting cards in the United States. Established in 1929, and still family owned by Prudent Publishing Company, we are proud to present the finest quality personalized Christmas cards and greeting cards available on the market today.

The Bongga
I ordered a set of Cheerful Greetings Cards, and the ordering process couldn't be easier. Just choose your design, then choose from a list of greetings (if you want to create a custom greeting it will cost extra), personalize your card with 2 custom lines (additional lines cost extra), and choose your envelope style (foil lining is free, self-sealing envelopes and printed return addresses cost extra).

My order arrived on time, and I was really pleased with how they turned out! The cardstock and envelopes are nice and thick, the print quality is excellent, and even though the design I ordered is cartoon-ish, it also had some gold foil accents (the tinsel) which I thought gave it a premium touch. They even included two free greeting cards!

The Blah
Some people might take issue with the lack of photo card designs (there are only a few, and your photo is not actually printed on the card, you have to print out your own photo and slip it into the sleeve of the photo card), but I actually don't. I have friends who prefer not to send or receive photo cards, and photo cards are not always appropriate, especially for business associates. The Gallery Collection's style is definitely more formal. I prefer more modern or whimsical designs (like the ones I ordered), but hey, that's a personal preference. Also, the price for a basic card is comparable with other online stationery sites, but all these extra costs are kind of irritating -- many of the "extras" are free options with most other sites -- and they do add up.

The Bottom Line
The Gallery Collection's premium paper and classic designs make them a great option for traditional holiday cards for business or personal use.

Win a set of greeting cards from The Gallery Collection
One lucky Bonggamom Finds reader will receive a beautiful set of greeting cards courtesy of The Gallery Collection. The winner gets to choose one of the following boxed sets:

You and your readers can enter to win one of our VIP noodle tasting kits, chef-quality skillets to prepare your meal, and a grand prize trip for two to spice up your weeknight in Las Vegas!

You can also celebrate National Noodle Day with four new Noodle entrees from P.F. Chang’s Home Menu. P.F. Chang’s Home Menu has introduced four new frozen noodle entrées to the line, so you have even more ways to enjoy the yumminess of P.F. Chang's at home!

About the new P.F. Chang's Home Menu varieties
If you love Asian noodles, you’re in for a treat. P.F. Chang’s Home Menu frozen noodle entrées featuring tasty combinations of robust sauces, marinated meats, and unique “noodle nests” that unravel in the skillet midway through cooking as the noodles get coated in a flavor-packed sauce, ensuring the delicate noodles maintain their trademark textures.

The two-serving P.F. Chang’s Home Menu noodle meals are available in four varieties for you to enjoy at home in just minutes:

• Garlic Chicken with Dan Dan Noodles – White meat chicken with a savory garlic sauce, bell peppers, bok choy and yakisoba noodles

• Pepper Steak with Chow Fun Noodles – Steak with a sweet and peppery sauce, bell peppers, onions and chow fun noodles

• Grilled Chicken Teriyaki with Lo Mein Noodles – Grilled chicken with a teriyaki sauce, pineapple, red bell peppers, onions and lo mein noodles

• Firecracker Shrimp with Yakisoba Noodles – Lightly battered shrimp with spicy sauce, carrots, edamame, onions and yakisoba noodles

P.F. Chang's Home Menu sent us a tasting kit, complete with chopsticks and noodle bowls, so our family could celebrate Noodle Day with a restaurant experience at home. We received the Pepper Steak with Chow Fun Noodles and the Garlic Chicken with Dan Dan Noodles, and it was almost like eating out at P.F. Chang's!

Both varieties were delicious. Alfie and I loved the pepper steak, which had a nice mix of sweet and spicy. The kids prefer the milder taste of the garlic chicken, and they loved slurping up the noodles (I think they're actually soba noodles, by the way; my understanding is that dandan noodles refer to the dish, rather than the type of noodle). I thought the dish was rather heavy on the sauce, but fixing it was a simple matter of boiling more soba noodles and adding them in. It turns out that was the smart thing to do, since my kids have big appetites and the serving sizes are on the small side. But preparing more is not a big deal, a pack only costs about $8, and it's so easy to throw into the pan to warm up. It's such an easy way to get the P.F. Chang's restaurant experience! We're all big fans of P.F. Chang's the restaurant, and now we're big fans of P.F. Chang's Home Menu as well.

NOVICA's Pink Ribbon Collection

When you buy a product from online retailer Novica.com, you're not only getting a beautiful work of art (I can vouch for their craftsmanship and design -- check out the beautiful necklace from NOVICA they sent me last year!). You're also helping skilled artisans from third-world countries.

This month, there's an added bonus -- 10% of October sales from Novica's Pink Ribbon Collection will be donated to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. I'm loving the hand-woven cotton scarf from Central America and the sweet pink cotton blouse from Thailand, but I'd take practically anything from that collection. Shopping for cute stuff never felt so good.

giveaway Funky Monkey Snacks for Halloween

Halloween is all about ghosts and goblins, bobbing for apples, costumes, pumpkins... yeah, right. As far as kids are concerned, it's all about the candy -- and you just know they're going to have a lot of it, all month long. I tend to be more relaxed about letting my kids have candy for Halloween hey, it's my favorite holiday (I love candy too!) and it only comes once a year. The key is making sure they brush their teeth and balance out the candy by eating healthy foods like fruits and vegetables.

Fortunately there are snacks like Funky Monkey that are both healthy and delicious, so they make a great alternative to sugary candy. We've already sampled their original four flavors as well as their Applemon, Pink Pineapple and MangOJ flavors. This time around Funky Monkey sent us four flavors. We got to enjoy Applemon, MangOJ, Jivealime and Carnaval Mix, and once again, the kids went bananas for them. Funky Monkey snacks are freeze-dried fruit, so it's sweet and crunchy, and it has all the goodness of real fruit. See, we even stuck them in our fruit basket because they're just like real fruit!

I love how Funky Monkey has paired together different fruits -- mango with orange, pineapple with lime, etc... -- in each variety, so you get a really unique flavor that you can't find with other kinds of fruit snacks. All the flavors I've tried so far are great, but my favorite has got to be the Carnaval Mix, because you get to try so many kinds of fruit.

At about $1 each for the single-serve (0.42 -oz) package, I can't afford to hand them out to trick-or-treaters on Halloween night, but you can bet these are showing up in my kids' lunchboxes.
Frankly, I don't know why kids would want to eat fruit chews when they have Funky Monkey snacks (now chocolate, that's another matter). They're an easy way for parents to "trick" their kids into having a real "treat"!

Hearts For Hearts Girls Review and Giveaway

Keep reading to find out how you can win a Hearts For Hearts Girl!

I'm always trying to teach my kids about the importance of global awareness and multiculturalism. I want them to know that most people around the world do not live as we do, and I want to show them how much better the world is because of the variety of cultures we have. I'm so glad that now there is a doll that can help bring the point home and show my girl what a beautiful world we live in. Hearts For Hearts Girls is a collection of multicultural dolls showcasing a different culture around the world. The dolls help girls identify more closely with other cultures by showing them how girls in other countries dress, live, and contribute to their families, communities and culture. Even better, a portion of Hearts For Hearts doll purchase is donated to children's causes in that doll's country. Each doll has a story, based on real-life girls, and your daughter is going to want them all!

About Hearts For Hearts
Changing the World One Heart at a Time! That is the goal of the new Hearts For Hearts Girls doll line and fashion collection from Playmates Toys. The collection features six dolls from around the world, each with an inspiring story to share

The authentically dressed and lifelike dolls each represent a girl who is working to change her community in ways that are unique to her home country. Included with each doll are a friendship bracelet and a story booklet that explains how these multicultural girls live and contribute to their families, communities, and culture. Each doll also comes with a special code that unlocks a free membership to the kid-safe Hearts for Hearts Girls Website, which features:

Additional information about each of the Hearts For Hearts Girls and the countries in which they live

Educational activities and lively games that are fun and rich in culture

Intriguing stories about real girls who are making a difference

While all girls are welcome to visit the site, the code unlocks access to additional features, including a larger array of games and a “myHeart” page

To further bring to light each Hearts For Hearts Girls’ culture, additional outfits are available for the dolls, so that your little girl can envision her doll’s story as she plays and changes the doll’s attire.

Additionally, through a partnership with World Vision3, a portion of the proceeds from the sale of each Hearts For Hearts Girls doll is donated to programs that support girls in that doll’s country. Whether it’s malaria nets in Africa, schoolbooks in Asia, or food supplies in the United States, these programs help girls to thrive and succeed.

What a great way to teach girls about other countries and cultures! I truly applaud the Hearts For Hearts Girls vision and commitment, so when MyBlogSpark invited me to do a review and giveaway for Hearts For Hearts Girls, I gladly agreed. They sent us Nahji, a bright girl from India who is working to give herself a bright future by staying in school.

These are great dolls. I love Nahji's youthful, wholesome look, and I love how she truly represents her culture. All the Hearts For Hearts girls have ethnically correct features, and wouldn't look out of place in her home country. In fact, if you took a collection of the most gorgeous little girls from India, Belarus, Laos, the USA, Mexico and Ethiopia, and turned them into dolls, you'd end up with Nahji, Lilian, Tipi, Del, Consuelo and Rahel, the Hearts For Hearts girls!

Here are some photos I took of Nahji. She is so pretty. Her hair is long and silky and lovely to comb, and she comes with the cutest outfit: pink tunic, lavender leggings, sandals, and tons of accessories.

Nahji's accessories include bangles, earrings, a headband, a nose ring, a comb, a small storybook, and a bracelet for her proud owner, The Pea. Unfortunately, Nahji's nose ring disappeared within a day of her arrival (it was just a stick-on), but we still have everything else. Nahji's gold bangles are so cute!

Check out the beautiful detail in her leggings. I also love the way they made Nahji's sandals look like flip flops (i.e. with a strap on her big toe) even though her plastic toes don't separate!

Like many Indian girls, Nahji has henna designs painted onto her hand. It really adds to the authentic look.

Did you notice something different about the photo above? That's right, Nahji has changed outfits! My BlogSpark also sent us a separate school outfit. Technically, it's supposed to be Rahel's school outfit (Rahel is the Hearts for Hearts girl from Ethiopia), but since all Hearts For Hearts Girls are the same size, it fits Nahji perfectly.

At first I was bummed that Hearts For Hearts Girls are just 14 inches, as opposed to the more popular 21 inch dolls. Since they're smaller, Nahji can't really share outfits with The Pea's other dolls. She looks so tiny compared to the other dolls -- but Alfie made a really good point, namely that I'm probably just used to the bigger dolls. When I look at Nahji on her own, she's just perfect. The Pea thinks so too!

"A Day Made Better" Office Max Teacher Giveaway

Every year, when classes start, our school holds a Back-to-School night. Parents visit their kids' classrooms, where the teacher gives a short presentation about what the class will be learning throughout the year and what sorts of activities they'll be doing. It's also a chance to sign up for volunteer activities or donate classroom supplies. Most teachers put out a "wish list" of supplies like printer ink, markers, wipes, and other supplies they need to keep the classroom running, and parents sign up to donate specific items. By the end of Back-to-School night, most or all of the items on the wish list are usually spoken for.

I know we're the lucky ones. We live in a district with some fairly affluent residents who support our public schools, and we have a dedicated PTA who raises funds and keeps our school well supplied with necessities for the teachers and kids. We also have parents who can afford to donate the rest. But that's certainly not the case in many other areas around the country. My blogging friend Heather, a.k.a. Tween Teacher, who I met two years ago at the Back-to-School webcast with OfficeMax, told me that many, many teachers actually have to buy school supplies -- with their own money -- for the kids they teach. I've since learned that teachers are now spending an average of $1,000 out-of-pocket annually on classroom supplies to offset budget shortfalls; this figure was first cited by a National Education Association survey in 2005 and confirmed by an OfficeMax survey of teachers in June 2009.

Speaking of OfficeMax, I'm once again joining forces with them in their annual Day Made Better campaign to donate school supplies to teachers, so they spend less time worrying about supplies and more time teaching kids. Tomorrow, October 4, OfficeMax will be surprising more than 1,000 dedicated teachers at Title 1 schools across the nation today, with $1 million worth of classroom supplies – that's $1,000 per classroom!

I am so excited and honored to be a part of this program! As an OfficeMax Max Mom, I'll be doing the following:

* I'll be joining some OfficeMax associates at a local school to help surprise a local teacher with $1,000 in classroom supplies.

* I'll be surprising a teacher of my choice with $100 in school supplies in a mini Day Made Better box.

* I'm hosting a giveaway below so that one of my readers can conduct a Day Made Better surprise for their own favorite teacher!

How You Can Help

* Organize your own Day Made Better surprise for your favorite teacher! Gather together a box of new school supplies, or purchase a discounted box of school supplies through Adopt-A-Classroom and A Day Made Better.

* Donate directly to your favorite teacher's classroom through Adopt-A-Classroom

* Spread the word about A Day Made Better.

* Join the giveaway below!

Stay tuned for more posts on this week's A Day Made Better events. I'm looking forward to surprising some very worthy teachers!

Count down to Halloween with Pottery Barn Kids

I love giving our home a Halloween makeover; starting October 1 I begin to cover our windows and walls with spiderwebs, ghosts and other fun Halloween decor. Over the years I've amassed a sizeable collection of Halloween decor -- candles, figurines, wall hangings, tablecloths, and anything that will get us and our visitors into the Halloween spirit.

Our latest decor item comes courtesy of Pottery Barn Kids -- they sent us a Halloween Countdown Calendar to make the suspense of waiting for October 31 easier and more fun. It's perfect for our back kitchen wall, where a poster of Napa Valley usually hangs:

In previous years, I've hung plastic Halloween posters, with ghouls or witches on them, the kind you can get at drugstores and dime stores. They're cheap-looking, and no matter how long they hang, you can never get the folds out! This calendar is much better. I love the whimsical, handmade, vintage look! It came with a hanging pole (we covered the nail in the wall with a little rubber bat) and it's made with heavy felt, so it hangs down nicely. You can also personalize it with your name at the bottom for an extra $7.

However, it's not just a great Halloween wall hanging; the Countdown Calendar has 31 little felt pockets sewn in so you can hide little toys and treats, just like an advent calendar. The pockets are pretty small, and you don't want to stretch the felt, so you won't be able to tuck in a king-sized chocolate bar -- but that's a good thing. I've placed little erasers and plastic spiders and rubber witch fingers and stickers, and my 3 kids are going to take turns retrieving the day's toy. The Oct. 31 pocket will have a small chocolate inside, and it will belong to ME.

The Pottery Barn Kids Halloween Countdown Calendar is on sale right now for $44.99. Remember, the sooner you get it, the more fun you'll have with it!

Disclosure: I received a product sample to facilitate my review, but have not been paid to review the product or give my opinions. The views and opinions expressed here are my own.
