Introducing American Girl's Shine On Now Program (and enter to win an American Girl doll!)

Shine On Now - American Girl

I've been blogging about American Girl dolls for a long time, and my posts have ranged from
whiny to defensive to humbled to crafty to excited to happy. Now I'm adding "meaningful" to that list. I am incredibly excited and honored to be working with American Girl to spread the word about their new charitable initiative -- the Shine On Now™ program -- and encourage all the American Girls out there to participate.

Starting July 13, American Girl's Shine On Now™ program will allow girls to log on to a website and donate 1-100 virtual stars each day. It doesn't cost anything to sign up for the program, and donating a star is free. For each star donated, American Girl will donate $1 (up to $1 million total in clothes, books, dolls and money) through July 31, to 4 designated charitable organizations.

Here's a more detailed description of the program from American Girl:
To foster a spirit of goodwill and help make the world a brighter place, American Girl is introducing Shine On Now™—a new charitable initiative that harnesses the collective power of girls to help others in need. Through Shine On Now, American Girl is calling on girls across the country to help the company give $1 million in clothes, books, dolls, and money to the following four organizations: Kids in Distressed Situations, Save the Children U.S.A., National Association of Children’s Hospitals and Related Institutions, and National Wildlife Federation.

Beginning July 13, 2010, girls can visit shineonnow.com to contribute a free ‘star’ to the effort. The goal is to collect one million stars by the end of the program on July 31, 2010. In addition, for every star a girl contributes (she can donate up to 100 each day!), her name will automatically be entered in a daily drawing to win a new My American Girl™ doll.

As part of the Shine On Now initiative and to further encourage girls to let their spirits shine, American Girl is also launching a brand-new virtual campus, Innerstar University™—a fun, safe online world where girls learn to be their best through a variety of games, quizzes, and other enriching activities that help boost their confidence and strength. Access to the new virtual world is free with each 18-inch My American Girl doll—the company’s newly enhanced contemporary product line that allows a girl to create a special doll as unique as she is.

Isn't that great? I love the way they have structured this program because it gives girls a way to contribute to a great cause. Girls aren't asked to donate their own money, just a little bit of time and effort. American Girl could easily have just donated the money outright, but they are empowering girls and making them feel like they are doing their part. I think parents will agree with me that this is a great learning opportunity for their daughters and a wonderful way to get children started with helping their community.

Making a difference couldn't be easier, and The Pea and I can't wait for the program to start!

I would like to nominate my daughter, Samantha. She deserves the doll because she is a beautiful person inside and out. She was a tutor at her school for a kindergartner every day during their rest time she would leave her 1st grade class and work with the little boy playing learning games with him and reading with him. She is also a girl scout Daisy and they did quite a few things for the community food drives and took cookies to a nursing home with cards they made for all the residents around Christmas. She also loves to recycle and tries to remind all of us of the things we should do to help preserve our planet...We are just so proud of her for all the hard work that she does everyday and the wonderful girl that she is!!!

My best friend has a daughter who will be turning five this year and it would be wonderful to give her this doll for her birthday. This girl and her mom have had a tough year, having gone through a divorce, a new home, and a new job. I'd love to be able to give her something extravagant for her birthday!

I would like to nominate my daughter, Reigan, for this awesome give-away. She is the frilly, sparkly, pink-a-licious heartbeat of this house, being the only girl stuck in the middle of 4 stinky, loud brothers. Reigan is entering Kindergarten this fall and we spend time as a family volunteering with several local non-profit organizations including, Hillcrest Transitional Housing, Meet The Need, and she is very excited that she will get to volunteer for the first time this fall at the Kansas City Rescue Mission. Reigan has also been involved at community awareness events with our church, and is impatiently waiting for our first foster daughter to be placed with our family so she can share her room & her life with another GIRL!
Reigan is so compassionate that it wouldn't surprise me that if she was the recipient of this doll that she would give her current AG doll to her best friend Hope, who does not have one and wishes she did.

I nominate my daughter, Katherine. When we moved to Oklahoma 3 years ago Katherine became best friends with Maddie, who has diabetes. Katherine, who was only 6, took it upon herself to learn everything she could about her friend's illness and what it entails (checking her blood sugar and adjusting her food intake, etc.) so she could support her and help look out for her. Katherine is also determined to help find a cure. She participates in the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation's annual "Walk for the Cure" and draws "thank you" pictures and notes to thank all her sponsors, even though writing is difficult for her. (She sees an occupational therapist to help her with it.) Katherine is sure that with prayer and everyone working together there WILL be a cure found. I am so proud to be the mom of such an empathetic and determined young lady!

She does walks for cures. She always see the bigger picture and and looks at the brighter side. She is truely amzing. When I cry she wipes up my tears and makes me fell better. I would love to nominate my daughter for the American Girl doll. She's only four, but she is showing so many signs that she "gets" it already. She goes through her clothes and chooses some every season (that still fit - not just the ones she's outgrown) to give to those less fortunate. She gives away her toys that she no longer plays with without throwing a fit - and helps me sort through them. She last weekend took money from her piggy bank and went to the library's book sale to purchase books that she has since donated to a women and children's shelter in our area. She rocks!

I am entering this contest for my almost 2 year old daughter Isabella. We have yet to buy her a doll (which we were going to do for her birthday). I think having an American Girl doll as her first would be great. She's a great kid very gentle, helpful and always likes to share. She brings joy to every she comes in contact with.

I was raised with American Girl dolls (back when it was pleasant company and they were made in Germany). I LOVE the historical dolls and I think I gained my great love of history because of the dolls. Hopefully this generation will gain a sense of self exteme from these dolls.

I would like to nominate my mother. Being a single mother with two young children would be hard. Especially if you just got a new job and wanted to keep it and still be able to raise your children. She always had an eye on an American Girl Doll but she never wanted to waste her hard earned money on a 95$ doll. She was saving for our university. When she married my step-dad, we were very more happy than before. But she forgot about the doll she had her eye on. I would like to get her that doll because she was a very determined mother with a heart of gold.

She is an inspiration to all young ladies. She will be turning 8 in August and this would make a wonderful gift for her. Also next year at her parent-partnered school she will be studying American Girl history. It would be fun for her to take her doll with her to her class.

As all the other writers here nominated very deserving girls, I too would like to nominate my daughter, Carolyn. She is 9, going on 13, going on 35! We recently lost my Dad at the age of 58, who we have lived with since my daughter was 10 months old, to a very fast growing cancer a year ago and through the entire whirlwind process, she was a strong and amazingly beautiful soul. She reminded me that God was protecting "Poppy" through the unknown journey and had complete faith that all would work out. Last weekend, my mother, age 57, suffered a heart attack. The doctors were able to put in a stint, but were suprised that she is still with us due to the extensive blockage and damage to her heart. Due to this, we had to cancel our summer vacation that we take every year and change many things about our lifestyle, including diet, excercise, etc. My daughter was dissapointed at first, but took it all in stride, reminding me that "family comes first" and as long as we are together, life is good. I know I have had an extremely difficult time this past year, but it is the kindness and spirit of my 9 year old who has the wisdom of a great-grandparent reminding me what is important. I absolutely love this kind side of her. However, I am nominating her for this because I want her to remember that she is also a 9 year old little girl! I never want her to lose the beautiful, kind soul that loves to volunteer at a local food bank, take in abused and neglected animals and help out family, but I also want her to not grow up too fast. I hope she always remembers to celebrate the little girl she was, the beautiful young lady she is now, and the amazing young adult she will become.

I would nominate my daughter. Even at her age she has compassion for others and is always willing to help people out. She will often stop and help people without prompting, such as helping someone in the store pick up something they dropped. She helps with many chores, even at a young age. And it is amazing to see her make decisions, not to benefit only herself, but keeping the feelings and wants of others in mind. The cutest thing is how much she takes care of her younger sister. For her birthday, she received two Zhu Zhu Hamsters (different styles) and automatically, without thinking about it, she hands one to her sister and says “this one is for you!” She is constantly sharing with others around her. She has compassion for animals and a desire to help the environment. I am proud of the way she is growing up and look forward to watching her help many others as the years progress!
Thank you for this wonderful giveaway!

I would like to nominate my younger sister madison. She truely does deserve this doll for all that she does. First of all, when both me and my youngest sister were diagnosed with diabetes she started learning about the disease and raising awareness at her school by having fundraisers to donate money to the Jouvenile diabetes research fund. As well, she has been going to Feed My Starving Children on a weekly basis, bringing friends to help as well. Finally, after our dog died recently because a car was speeding down a road near our house, she has written numerous letters to our city council to have signs as well as speed humps put in the road near our house as well as ones in our city to prevent future losses of animals or children.

I would like to nominate my 9-year-old daughter, Kari, to win an American girl doll. As she has gotten into AG, I have seen her self-confidence and self-esteem blossom and she is growing into a poised young woman full of creative ideas (starting her own business) and willing to stand up for herself and her friends and do what is right. She is also an awesome volunteer for two rescues: Dane County Humane Society and Dane County Friends of Ferals – she volunteers in the cat rooms, collects food and toys, takes pictures and movies and distributes flyers. She is always helpful to her friends and classmates and a great piano player.

I would like to nominate my daughter Jamie! She really has inspired me these past few years! Jamie has suffered from severe GI problems for 7 years and many other horrible medical problems many still undiagnosed. Even when she was diagnosed with Crohn's disease a horrible life long disease she still had a smile on her face and said "But mommy it's treatable and I will feel better!" I as a mother have been so scared almost losing her multiple times. Even when she has PICC lines or feeding tubes she will still go out and public and answer questions when people ask. She has been through way more then anyone should ever in a lifetime!

On top of being chronically ill she is a member of her schools National Honor Socity and enjoys doing community service. Every Sunday she can she helps teach Sunday school and babysits during worship service. Also each week she prepares activity bags for the kids to do during worship. My husbands father (her grandpa) came to live with us dying of cancer last year and Jamie very willingly helped us out with out. Organizations Jamie has helped fundraise for are relay for life, heifer project, hurricane katrina relief, and UNICEF.

Please consider my daughter! She is my hero!

Nomination:
My daughter Sierra represents what "Shine On Now" is all about. Sierra, who is eight, is always friendly and tries to help everywhere she goes. She volunteers with church and is a Brownie Girl Scout. She loves to help out the local SPCA and wishes she could adopt every dog there!

Sierra has taken a stand against bullying, American Girl's message with the 2009 Girl of the Year. Sierra reported bullies who had taken another child's glasses on the bus. Most of the children on the bus had witnessed the incident and follow up bullying, but were afraid to report it. The child whose glasses were taken was even afraid to tell and claimed he'd lost them "in the snow." Sierra was a hero that day and is always to us.

Sierra is a HUGE American Girl fan and would love to win a doll because of her caring spirit. Combining her love for American Girl and desire to help others will only fuel her fire to continue enjoying both- what a great idea American Girl has come up with!

I'd like to nominate my soon to be 8 yo. daughter Emily. She shines from the inside out and inspires others to shine too!! She is a very active Girl Scout Brownie and has taken in part in multiple comunity service projects. She helped to make blankets for our local animal shelter, made posters to raise awareness in her school about conserving water, collected canned goods for a local woman's shelter and personally had a lemonade stand and donated her earnings to a local family in need!! She loves to have fun and her American Girl doll is her best friend, she likes to take her everywhere! She's taken her doll on a few trips, her favorite trip so far was to American Girl Place in Chicago!

My daughter is amazing. When I was diagnosed with cancer, my 9 year old wanted to do something special for other kids whose parents were going through treatments. She started a toy drive in the community and dropped them off at the local cancer center. She is currently involved in hockey, dance, cheer and girl scouts.

I would nominate my 10 year old daughter. She has Attention Deficit Disorder and sometimes struggles with social settings but she also has a HUGE heart and loves to take care of people. Her teacher this past year saw this attribute in her and hooked her up with the autistic child in their class and it worked out really well. She was there to help remind that student to be sure and have all of her library books ready and such when it was time to go to the library and relieved the teacher of this task. I can see my daughter being a really good special needs teacher some day! I love that instead of seeing ADD as a handicap she is using the things that go along with it to make her a better person. She loves American Girl dolls and if she won I would gladly send you a picture of you with her doll to post on your blog!

I would like to nominate my daughter, Gabby. I think she deserves this doll because she works extra hard in everything she does. She has worked very hard to get the lead part in a play in one of our city's major theaters and was rewarded after her hard work with the part. I also think that she is a very kind person and also gives to others- even running an Angel Tree Drive at her school. Gabby is also very kind to her other American Girl dolls and is always gentle with them, even her sister's and cousin's dolls. If she wins, I would gladly take a picture of her and send it to you. Here is my e-mail- teresa@vanhatten.com

I would like to nominate my 8 year old daughter. She is a beautiful, amazing girl who will help anyone who is in need of help. My husband and I are both active duty military members and we have to go away for deployments, training, etc quite often. So when other kids' parents are deployed, etc, she knows what they are feeling, etc and will be there to listen to their worries/concerns or just there to give them a hug. She is also very into recycling and will pick up trash whenever she sees it on the ground. She also does very well in school and will help her little sister out whenever she needs it.

My 8 yr old daughter volunteers to teach and model social skills to children with autism, because her big brother has autism. She is incredibly patient and understanding, and finds ways to reach the kids through songs, games, and just sitting quietly beside them. She volunteers with autism sibling support groups and shares her feelings about having a brother with autism who cannnot communicate nor care for himself. She is an amazing open, loving and giving child who would probably choose to share or donate this doll if she won! Thank you for an opportunity to honor and recognize her contributions to making the world a better place for children with disabilities.

My youngest sister deserves an American girl doll. My grandmother used to buy an american girl for each of her granddaughters on our 8th birthday, everyone has one except my sister Juliet because my grandmother has started to be effected by dementia. Yet Juliet of all of the girls should have had this honor from my grandmother because they are close. Juliet loves her "mom-mom" and constantly asks when we are going to see her and no matter how my grandmother feels, Juliet always makes her smile!

From helping a fragile pedestrian cross the street to volunteering her time to helping out at her church...you can always count on her! The little girl I nominate is my very thoughtful and generous daughter, Kaylee. She is very worthy of this prize. I would like to nominate my daughter Lucy. She just turned four years old. She sang in church today and helped with the offering. She has come to me spontaneously several times and asked if she could give a special toy to one of her visiting friends. She loves to meet new people and play with anyone and everyone. I am so proud of her open and welcoming spirit. While she is still a little young to participate in many organized volunteer organizations, we are working in that direction. Every year we ask her friends to donate art supplies to the local moms club (www.summervillemoms.com) instead of bringing presents. She has visited the local animal shelter to play with animals and love them for a few minutes, so they are not alone all day.

Her most recent obsession is telling everyone that they are THE BEST mom, dad, friend, or “stephen” (eg) in the world. Well, she tells my husband that he is the best daddy in the whole wide CITY. That is just too cute to correct. *smile*

We are collecting material to make some special pillow cases for kids in the children’s hospital network that is supported by ShineOn.

My daughter is going to use fabric paint to special designs on some of them. We are going to organize this as event for several of her friends to participate in. She can’t wait to make a pillow that will make someone feel better!

While I certainly don’t want her to grow up too fast. I can’t wait to know the person that she is destined to be. I am so happy that she is my child. I can’t wait to see the good that she is going to bring into this world.
