What to take to a Boudoir Photo Shoot

Boudoir photo shoots are all the rage nowadays; many women are dressing up (or down) in their lingerie and having a professional photographer take their photos. Some do it as a birthday or anniversary present for their husbands; others do it for themselves, to celebrate a milestone such as a weight loss, birthday, or other accomplishment. I recently had some boudoir photos taken for Alfie's birthday, and I can tell you, it was a liberating experience! I got to smile and smolder for the camera, and the resulting photos were amazing. I'm no Victoria's Secret model, but seeing those photos has done wonders for my self esteem.

As you can imagine, posing half-naked in front of a strange man and woman is not easy, but I highly recommend it. Do it for your husband. Do it for your relationship. Do it for yourself! And now that I'm a boudoir photo shoot veteran, I can offer some advice on what to take with your to the shoot in order to make the most of it:

1) Your confidence
Confidence is sexy! No matter what your shape or size, boudoir photos can highlight your best features and showcase that inner bombshell -- so face that camera with a smile on your face and a glint in your eye. Remember that the photographer is a professional, and it's his job to make you look good! He knows all the angles and lighting to get a great shot -- and when all else fails, you can always resort to a bit of retouching!

2) Bedroom eyes and hair
The one regret I have from my photo shoot is that I didn't make a bigger effort on hair and makeup. I rarely wear makeup so I'm not very good at putting it on, and I wish I had splurged a bit on a professional. I was going for the vamp look, so I'm happy I wore bright red lipstick and slicked my hair back, but in retrospect, I would have emphasized my eyes more with false eyelashes. Of course, heavy makeup isn't a requirement -- you can just as easily go with the natural look -- but remember that every bump and pore can be seen in closeup shots!

3) High heels
Sorry, you'll have to leave your Birkenstocks and Uggs at home. For sexy photos, only high heels will do. They add a touch of spice and naughtiness, and they make your legs look like they go on forever. If you're not used to high heels, don't worry; you'll probably be lying down, kneeling or straddling a chair for most of the photo shoot anyway! If you don't own a pair, borrow one or ask the photographer if he or she keeps some spare pairs at his studio . If that doesn't work, go barefoot.

4) Beautiful lingerie
Lingerie is what makes a boudoir photo shoot a boudoir photo shoot! Leave the white cotton panties and bra at home with the Birkenstocks and let your inner sexy shine! I brought 2 outfits with me; one was a black satin bra and panty set, which really added a stark, dramatic look, and the second was a corset outfit similar to this corset and thong set from EdenFantasys:

They have a huge selection of sexy lingerie, from the racy to the discreet, from teddies to pegnoirs to corsets to babydolls to bra and panty sets. Whatever your size, shape, whether you're bold or timid, you'll find the right lingerie for you.

So what are you waiting for? Your inner sexy is waiting to show itself to the camera!

New American Girl Smart Girl's Guide book

Oh, the tween years. I hated them. I think I looked and felt my worst between the ages of 9 and 12 -- taller than any of the boys, bigger than most of them, with big feet and big hair and bad teeth and bad skin..... I can still remember all the angst and insecurity I felt! I wish I could tell that girl today that in a couple of years, she would discover volleyball and slim down, discover dance and acquire some grace, get braces and transform her look.

The Pea will be 11 in two weeks, and I know she is already going through a lot of what I did. She's tall and big; in my opinion, not so ugly or awkward as I was, but then again, I probably wasn't as ugly as I thought I was! It's all in self-perception, and I'm making it a priority to let my daughter know how special and important she is, and how she should stay confident in her own abilities.

It's not an easy time for a kid, and as a parent, I'll take any help I can get, and American Girl books have already been a big help for me. I've gotten the Pea several of their Be Your Best and Body & Mind books, including The Care and Keeping of You, A Smart Girl's Guide to Friendship Troubles and Take the Challenge, and they have been a good starting point for open, honest discussions about things like having the courage to stand up for your convictions, dealing with rich kid boasting, or what to do to repair a friendship. American Girl's latest title -- A Smart Girl's Guide to Liking Herself -- looks like it's going to be another useful tool to help The Pea navigate the confusing world of growing up. She really likes it, and I think it offers a lot of good advice on where self-esteem comes from, what affects it (her moods, friends, family, etc...) and how she can keep her self-esteem high every single day. Heck, even I could use the advice in this book!

About A Smart Girl's Guide to Liking Herself -- Even on the Bad Days
Has a bad day got her down? In this advice-packed book, girls will learn how high self-esteem can turn a good day into a great day, while low self-esteem can make a bad day even worse. She'll learn tips for trusting herself, ideas for boosting her self-esteem (or for keeping it up), and how to feel her best in all kinds of situations. She is perfect just as she is, and this book will help her believe that to be true! 96 pages. Paperback. Author: Dr. Laurie Zelinger. Ages 10+

Also new this spring at the American Girl Bookstore are 2 Historical Fiction titles, a new Doll Travel craft book, a new Smart Girl's Guide, a new Treasure Totes line, and new titles in their Innerstar University series. Check out the American Girl online bookstore to see all the new titles!

Don't forget to enter my giveaway for the latest American Girl mystery book, The Cameo Necklace!

Disclosure: I received a review copy of A Smart Girl's Guide to Liking Herself -- even on the Bad Days. Product information is provided by American Girl and is indicated in italics. The views and opinions expressed here are my own.

Dale and Thomas Popcorn Review and Giveaway

Popcorn is one of my all-time favorite snacks. It can be salty or sweet. You can enjoy it plain or dress it up with butter, cheese, caramel, chocolate, barbecue flavor, even curry! You can shape it into balls, scoop it into muffin cups, or grab handfuls from a bowl. This week we received a gigantic box of Dale and Thomas Popcorn with 12 of their best-selling gourmet flavors: - Peanut Butter & White Chocolate DrizzleCorn - Twice-As-Nice Chocolate DrizzleCorn - Chocolate Chunk N'Caramel - Black & White Biscotti - Double Chocolate DrizzleCorn - Dark Fudge with Praline Almonds - Dale's Caramel - Cinnamon Creme DrizzleCorn - White Cheddar & Black Peppercorn - Hall of Fame Kettle Corn - Southwest Cheddar Chipotle - North Country Cheddar Each individual bag serves 2-4 people, which I would say is just about right. The bags vary in weight, from 1.5-7 ounces, (the varieties with chocolate are heavier, the salty/cheesy flavors are lighter). We are trying to pace ourselves, but from the moment we opened the first bag, all we wanted to to is rip open all the bags and fight each other to eat as much as we could -- think Hunger Games, but much safer and more enjoyable. So far, we've tried 7 flavors. The first three -- Chocolate Chunk 'N Caramel, Dark Fudge with Praline Almonds and North Country Cheddar -- didn't last long enough for me to swipe a handful for photos, but I managed to put aside some of the rest: In clockwise order, from top left: Dale's Caramel, Double Chocolate Drizzlecorn, Peanut Butter & White Chocolate Drizzlecorn, and Black & White Biscotti. Dale and Thomas, where, oh where have you been all my life? These are soooooo good. Each and every one that we've tried is fresh and crunchy. Each one has a distinct flavor, so with 12 of them, you're pretty much guaranteed to find one you like. Even Alfie, who generally dislikes popcorn, is enjoying it! My favorite so far is the Black & White Biscotti -- somehow they actually managed to make it taste like chocolate-coated biscotti! Dale and Thomas is like the holy grail of gourmet popcorn! So far, the only one that has not received rave reviews from my family is Dale's Caramel -- it seems to be the most heavily coated of all the varieties (the rest of the sweet ones are merely drizzled), and it is cloyingly sweet. I'm wondering whether the Cinnamon Creme DrizzleCorn will be the same way... I'll update this post once I've tried it. In conclusion: Beware. These would tempt even the Dalai Lama. Want to try Dale and Thomas gourmet popcorn? You can enjoy 20% off your order by using promo code BMA12 at checkout (offer expires April 30, 2012).

New American Girl Innerstar University title: The New Girl

When I was young, I loved reading a book series called Choose Your Own Adventure. It's quite a unique kind of book, where the reader is actually the protagonist of the book, and is asked to make choices to determine how the plot develops and what the final outcome of the book will be. Kids are constantly flipping from page to page ("If you choose to go down in the submarine to hunt the sea monster with Captain Kirk, go to page 24. If you choose to stay up on the main ship to battle the Nazi fighter planes with First Mate Jones, go to page 65."), so you can read the book many times and experience a different story. I guess you could say it was the pioneer to interactive entertainment!

It's good to see this kind of multiple-choice, multiple-ending book alive and well today, not just with the re-release of the CYOA series, but in other series like American Girl's Innerstar University books. This series is designed to appeal to girls -- it features My American Girl - type characters and is set in Innerstar University (AG's online game and activity site). The plotlines revolve around typical issues faced by 8 to 13-year old girls, and rewards girl-power values like confidence, independence and courage.

We received a copy of the latest title in the series -- The New Girl -- and I had a lot of fun reading through it. That is, after I managed to tear it away from The Pea! She had never read this kind of book before, and really enjoyed being able to make choices to determine how the story ends. It's a quick and easy read, and The Pea usually tears through a book in no time flat -- but she's not going to get bored any time soon. With over 20 different endings, she's going to get a lot of mileage out of this one book!

I must admit, the of idea of studying in a boarding school with its own stables and shopping mall and candy store may be completely absurd to a grownup -- but it's the perfect fantasy setting for a tween girl. And while the plot dilemmas may seem shallow (You are feeling left out because everyone is paying attention to the new girl), they are definitely issues and feelings that young girls face every day. And while the choices may seem silly, (Should you join the Fashion Outfit competition, even though you know nothing about putting a outfit together, or the Canoeing competition? Should you let Zoe know she's making you feel bad, or keep quiet for now? Should you try the Brie and crackers or politely decline?), I like the way the book "rewards" courage and open-mindedness and strength of character -- for example, making choices to try new things or being brave enough to speak up for your friends will result in happier story endings. It may not be classic literature, but for young girls, it's a good read.

About The New Girl:
Each reader can imagine herself as the main character of this interactive story set in the world of Innerstar University™! She thinks Zoé, the new girl, is brave for coming all the way from her home in France. She wants to get to know Zoé, but she also feels a bit jealous about all the attention the new arrival is getting. When a couple of girls start to tease Zoé, she feels torn—can she find the courage to speak up for what she knows is right? With more than 20 different endings, girls will enjoy this book again and again to see how different decisions change the story. Plus, each book comes with a secret access code to unlock additional endings online! 120 pages. Paperback. Author: Laurie Calkhoven. Ages 8+

Also new this spring is another Innerstar University title -- Behind the Scenes -- and many more, including a new Doll Travel craft book, a new Smart Girl's Guide, a new Treasure Totes line, and 3 new Historical Fiction titles. Check out the American Girl online bookstore to see all the new titles!

Introducing the Crest & Oral-B Pro-Health Clinical Line

Like most of you, I visit the dentist twice a year for a check-up and cleaning. Unlike most of you, that wasn't always the case. I used to visit the dentist four times a year, because several years ago, I had gingivitis.

Gingivitis. Ick. Even now, I cringe at the thought of it. The word brings up images of swollen gums, bad breath and rotting teeth. Up until then, I had been extremely lax with flossing, and I guess my gums paid the price. I quickly changed my habits -- what's the opposite of quitting cold turkey? -- and began a strict regimen of daily flossing and rinsing in addition to twice-daily brushing. My gum health improved, and I "graduated" from quarterly visits to semi-annual visits. No more gingivitis! I do miss that squeaky-clean feeling that you get after visiting the dentist for a thorough cleaning, but that's the only thing I miss about those frequent visits. I vowed never to put my gums and teeth at risk again, so even though it's a pain in the neck (or mouth?), I try to be vigilant about oral health care, for myself and my family.

That's why I'm excited to have been chosen by Mom Central Consulting to take part in the Crest and Oral-B Pro-Health Clinical Plaque Control Test Drive campaign. I've been sent their full Pro-Health Clinical Line -- consisting of Crest® Pro-Health® Clinical Plaque Control Toothpaste, Crest® Pro-Health® Clinical Rinse, Oral-B® Pro-Health ® Clinical Pro-Flex Toothbrush and Oral-B® Glide ™ Pro-Health ® Clinical Protection Floss -- and invited to use them as part of my daily oral care routine.

I'll talk more about each individual product in a future post, but after a week of daily use, I can definitely say that I would go out and buy the whole line after these samples are gone. Stay tuned for more of my thoughts..... but for now, here's an exciting sweepstakes!

Win a trip to the 2012 Olympics!

Enter the Pro-Health Clinical Olympic Games Sweepstakes for the chance to win a trip to the London 2012 Olympic Games! Weekly winners will also be drawn to receive the full Pro-Health Clinical Line from Crest & Oral-B. To enter the sweepstakes visit

www.crestoralbclinical.com/olympicgamessweeps.

The sweepstakes begins on March 15th and will run through May 31st. No purchase necessary. Void where prohibited.

Disclosure: I wrote this post while participating in a test drive campaign by Mom Central Consulting on behalf of Crest and Oral-B and received product samples to facilitate my candid review. Cars Land, Buena Vista Street, Carthay Circle Theatre open June 15 at Disney's California Adventure

The last time I visited the Disneyland Resort, Disney's California Adventure (DCA) was undergoing some major reconstruction. True to the Disney style, even the barriers were entertaining! Who else but Disney would turn a Pardon Our Dust sign into a work of art?! Adorable as the barriers were, I'm sure most people wanted them gone so they could finally see what lay beyond.

Guess what -- on March 7, the Disneyland Resort made the announcement on June 15, everything will finally be complete! That date marks the ends of a major DCA revamp that began way back in 2007. Over the years, Disney gradually introduced new attractions, like the wildly popular Toy Story Mania and World of Color. Last year they opened Ariel's Undersea Adventure and redesigned the turnstiles at the entrance.

And on June 15, the final touches will be in place, as Disney's California Adventure opens up Buena Vista Street, the Carthay Circle Theatre, and Cars Land. It's going to be amazing! Here's the rundown on what to expect:

Buena Vista Street
The new entryway to DCA will mirror the Main Street of Walt Disney's childhood that people see when they enter Disneyland. At DCA, guests will be transported back to the Los Angeles of the 1920, the way Walt saw it when he first arrived in California. The old Golden Gate Bridge replica at the entrance to DCA has already been replaced with a replica of the Glendale-Hyperion Bridge, to be more in keeping with the period and theme. Guests will be able to walk down the street street, enter storefronts (all done in period architecture, of course), or ride the Red Car Trolley, another 20's LA icon.

Carthay Circle Theatre
Just as Main Street in Disneyland ends at Sleeping Beauty's Castle, so will Buena Vista Street end at DCA's new landmark icon, the Carthay Circle Theatre. This is where Disney's "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" opened in 1937, and Disney imagineers have replicated this beautiful Spanish-style theatre. Inside will be the Carthay Circle Restaurant, which will be DCA's luxury dining destination.

Cars Land

This is probably the most awaited of all the new developments: 12 acres of pure Radiator Springs fun. Cars Land is going to resemble radiator springs, complete with Flo's V8 cafe and a great view of the mountains, just like you see in the Cars movies. Here are the 3 main attractions at Cars Land:

* Luigi’s Flying Tires -- This will be like a bumper car ride, but as the name suggests, the vehicles are shaped like tires, and they actually hover in the air!

* Radiator Springs Racers -- Modeled after Epcot Center's Test Track ride, visitors will be able to race around Radiator Springs, culminating in a side-by-side dual racecar finish; this is going to be Cars Land's E-ticket attraction!

* Mater's Junkyard Jamboree -- An adorable kids' ride similar to the Mad Hatter Teacups, kids can sit in trailers pulled by baby tractors, and go round and round to music sung by none other than Mater, everyone's favorite tow truck.

With so much going on, there's no way families will be able to allocate just a single day to Disney's California Adventure any more. It's going to take 2 days at the least to see and enjoy everything the park has to offer -- which means you'll want to budget 4 or 5 days or more for the whole Disneyland Resort -- Disneyland, Disney's California Adventure and Downtown Disney -- especially if you've never been there before. It's going to be so much fun!

Disclosure: I was invited to lunch by Disneyland Resort PR to learn about upcoming events at the Disneyland Resort. The views and opinions expressed here are my own.

Spring Shoe Event at Ross Dress for Less (and a giveaway for you!)

Hurrah, spring is here! Everyone is welcoming the warmer weather and the chance to break out those tank tops, linen skirts and preppy twinsets. Of course, no outfit is complete without shoes, so Ross Dress for Less in San Francisco is holding their annual Shoe Event this week! It began on March 23 and runs through April 30, with every style of shoe you can think of for spring and beyond.

To celebrate their Spring Shoe event, Ross kindly sent me a $25 gift card so I could check out their new spring styles and tell everyone about it (they've also given me a second gift card to give away, read all about it below!). $25 goes a long, long way at Ross, and I eagerly made a visit to Ross to see just how far that $25 could go.

As I approached the shoe section, I was assaulted with style upon style:

Strappy sandals! Wedges! Espadrilles! Peep toes! Spring colors... pink, white, yellow, tan .... and the accents... flowers, glitter, gems... to cute to be true! The choices were great, even for size 9, 10, and 11 (if you're a Bay Area Bigfoot like me, note that the San Francisco Market Street Ross has THE biggest selection of large-size women's footwear!). None of the shoes I saw, by the way, cost more than $25, so I was spoiled for choice.

Espadrilles are all the rage now, so I tried on quite a few pairs.

I absolutely loved the natural weave pattern on this pink pair. It was so comfy and cute!

I was sorely, soooooorely tempted by these peep-toe espadrilles. They are so feminine and dainty, and they'd look equally great with a skirt or capris. I really wanted a navy pair since I plan to wear lots of white and navy in the coming months... unfortunately these were a tad uncomfortable for my feet. They are canvas, so I think they probably would stretch, but I'm always nervous about shoes that don't feel good from the get-go. Still, I was all set to buy them.... and then I saw these beauties:

This is a match made in heaven! Ultra comfy, ultra-stylish, ultra-casual, just what I was looking for. I got them for the unheard-of price of $12.99! They were so inexpensive, I had enough left over to indulge in these pretty, strappy sandals:

These will go so well with the dress I bought for our school mother-daughter Easter brunch! I'm so excited to wear them! These were only $14.99, so I paid less for those 2 pairs of shoes than I would have paid for just one of them at a department store. In fact, I may run back to Ross and get those peep-toe espadrilles.....

New American Girl Historical Mysteries (and a giveaway for you!)

It's spring, and new American Girl books are popping up like daisies! The American Girl books are one of the most popular series in my kids' school library (as a school library volunteer, I know!), so I'm sure it won't be long before the girls are lining up to read all the new AG releases. We recently received a copy of The Cameo Necklace, and such a great book, it's too good not to share!

About the book:
As Cécile exits a crowded showboat after enjoying a lavish Floating Circus, she stumbles—and when she gets up, she realizes that the cameo necklace she borrowed from her aunt is no longer on her neck. Knowing that the necklace was the last gift Tante Tay's husband gave her before he died, Cécile is desperate to find it. As she tracks down the people in the crowd who were near her when she fell, her search takes her into many corners of New Orleans, from a society tea party to the crowded French Market, even the dangerous cypress swamps...and deep into secrets she never imagined! An illustrated "Looking Back" essay provides facts about the 1850s. 192 pages. Paperback. Author: Evelyn Coleman. Ages 9+

The Cameo Necklace is a great story that's sure to resonate with young readers right from the start. Every girl can relate to losing a valued treasure like a necklace, and going through any lengths to find it!

As a parent, I really like how this book is more than just a thriller; it also teaches many life lessons and provides a historical context for so many of the issues young girls face today. It was quite sobering to read about how Cecile's brother Armand is harrassed and threatened because he is a young black man, especially with the case of Trayvon Martin. Like all the Cecile/Marie-Grace books, The Cameo Necklace provides the perfect talking point for parents to open up conversations with their daughters about race and prejudice.

Also new this spring at the American Girl Bookstore are 2 Historical Characters titles:

The Hidden Gold: A Marie-Grace Mystery
The Crystal Ball: A Rebecca Mystery

and many more, including a new Doll Travel craft book, a new Smart Girl's Guide, a new Treasure Totes line, and new titles in their Innerstar University series. Check out the American Girl online bookstore to see all the new titles!

The elusive Date Night

For Alfie and me, date nights are like unicorns: rare and magical. Oh, we veg out in front of the tv after the kids have gone to bed, and we sometimes we even manage to turn the tv off and have a real conversation and - *gasp!* - a romantic moment or two. I'm talking about actual dates where we go out to dinner and a movie, or dinner and a show, or attend a party (kid-free!) or just dinner. Heck, even coffee after some boring school function counts as a date in my book. Anything that gets us out of the house and away from the kids!

Like many parents, there are a number of factors conspiring against more frequent Date Nights:

* Lack of energy
* Lack of funds
* Lack of people we trust to watch our kids
* Lack of availability of said people

Yup, like I said. Unicorns.

But here's something just as unicorn-like: the relationship I have with my husband. It's rare. It's magical. I value it. I don't want to lose it. And we'll do anything to keep it going.

Date Nights are important, because it helps us reconnect as people, not just as 3Po's and Jammy's and The Pea's parents. We plan to be together long after our kids have flown from our nest, so we do what we have to do in order to keep that magical unicorn from disappearing from our lives. Even if it means packing my husband peanut-butter sandwiches to take to the office or giving up that cute pair of new shoes I saw for spring or waiting till my mom makes her annual visit from the Philippines or playing phone tag with our regular babysitter.

I'll say it again. Date nights are like unicorns. If only it weren't so darn difficult to catch one!

If you feel the same way, check out Sitterscout, the latest and greatest unicorn-catching tool:

SitterScout is an online/mobile tool that works from any smartphone (or on your computer) to help book your existing babysitters faster, by instantly contacting the sitters you choose - and enabling them to respond - via SMS.

SitterScout can be used to schedule any of your babysitters, no matter where you’ve found them - whether it’s the girl down the street, or someone you found through an online sitter service.

You enter your sitters’ information (which is only visible to you,) then choose which sitters to contact when you need some time away. We contact those chosen via SMS, and they can reply back with a simple text message to accept or decline. When a sitter accepts, the parent gets a text message letting them know immediately.

Parents can choose to invite their sitters in “rounds,” so their favorites get first dibs, or they can contact everyone at once.

Check out SitterScout and schedule your babysitters today!

To Kill A Mockingbird: 50th Anniversary Edition is out on Blu-Ray & DVD

I recently wrote about how dismayed I am to see that racism is alive and well, even in this day and age. Despite everything this country has been through, old habits die hard and it is discouraging to realize how difficult it is to eradicate such deep-set beliefs and prejudices. It's a daunting task, but the only way to move forward is to educate the next generation, open their eyes, get them to try and know the people they profess to hate, so they can realize that they are not so different from one another.

This is one of the key messages of To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. To Kill a Mockingbird is one of those books that I can read again and again; it's such a heartwrenching story that I'm surprised I can bring myself to go back to it, but I do. I feel the same way with the movie; Gregory Peck's performance as Atticus Finch always leaves me in tears. If you haven't read the book or seen the movie, I highly recommend that you do. It's amazing.

Incredibly, the movie is now celebrating its 50th anniversary, and Universal Studios has released a 50th Anniversary edition Blu-Ray and DVD. They sent me a copy to review, so I can enjoy time and time again. In the movie, Gregory Peck plays lawyer Atticus Finch, who is the defense lawyer of a black man wrongfully accused of raping a white woman in a small Alabama town. The evidence overwhelmingly acquits the black man, but the jurors refuse to see past their prejudices.

What makes this movie so memorable is the parallel story of how Atticus' teaches his own children, Jem and Scout, about the realities of prejudice, and how they can overcome it in their own lives. It's amazing to realize that this story is so relevant, even today. This book and movie should be required reading and viewing in every school in the US, and if it isn't, parents should take the initiative. The book might be too meaty or verbose for younger kids, in which case I definitely recommend the movie (and Commonsense Media agrees with me). It may be a courtroom drama, but Jem and Scout's storyline makes it interesting for kids, and no parent should pass up the opportunity for such an important teaching moment.

About the movie
Screen legend Gregory Peck stars as courageous Southern lawyer Atticus Finch - the Academy Award®-winning performance hailed by the American Film Institute as the Greatest Movie Hero of All Time. Based on Harper Lee’s Pulitzer Prize winning novel about innocence, strength and conviction and nominated for eight Academy Awards®, this beloved classic is now digitally remastered and fully restored for optimum picture and sound quality and boasts hours of unforgettable bonus features. Watch it and remember why “it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.”

About the 50th Anniversary Edition

New FEED 12 TOMS shoe debuts April 1

Attention, TOMS lovers! TOMS and FEED are pairing up (pun intended) and coming out with a special FEED 12 TOMS shoe, made of burlap and printed with the FEED logo. The purchase of any pair of TOMS results in a donation of a pair of new shoes to a child in need, but when you purchases these special shoes, 12 school meals will also be donated in addition to the shoes! My daughter LOVES her TOMS shoes, and she has convinced me to buy a pair of my own, but I haven't yet decided which color or design. I had my heart set on a navy or red pair (the perfect summer espadrilles!) but now this FEED 12 TOMS shoe is tempting me. Who says I have to limit myself to just 1 pair.....

TOMS founder Blake Mycoskie and FEED founder Lauren Bush have joined together to create special limited edition TOMS shoes just in time for Mother’s Day. The FEED 12 TOMS Classics will be available for women ($58) and toddlers ($34), featuring the well-known FEED stamp on burlap material. Through the simple purchase of these shoes, 12 school meals AND one pair of new shoes will be given to a child in need.

TOMS + FEED Limited Edition Shoes will be sold exclusively on TOMS.com.

About TOMS:
In 2006, American traveler Blake Mycoskie befriended children in a village in Argentina and found they had no shoes to protect their feet. Wanting to help, he created TOMS, a company that would match every pair of shoes purchased with a pair of new shoes given to a child in need. One for One. Just last year, TOMS evolved from a shoe company to the One for One company, now addressing an entirely new need in addition to shoes through eyewear, helping give sight to people in need.

About FEED:
After witnessing the effects of hunger firsthand when traveling as a WFP Honorary Spokesperson, Lauren Bush Lauren co-founded FEED Projects in 2007 with the mission of creating good products that help FEED the world. Every product sold has a measurable donation attached to it and, thus far, FEED has been able to provide over 60 million meals globally through the UN World Food Programme. Additionally, FEED has supported nutrition programs around the world and in the US through organizations such as UNICEF and DonorsChoose.org.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is out on Blu-ray/DVD

When I first heard about Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, I wanted to watch it right away. After all, it's based on the John LeCarre novel and has a powerhouse cast of well-respected actors (note, I said actors, not stars!), so I had a feeling I would enjoy all the mind games and the drama. Alas, I was already too late; it had long since gone from theatres and was already an Oscar and BAFTA- nominee.

Fortunately, I didn't have long to wait to see it: the movie has just come out in a Blu-ray combo pack and DVD, and I was lucky enough to receive a copy for review. In my opinion, watching it on DVD turned out to be even better than watching it in the movie theatre because Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is such a convoluted plot-twister that I simply must watch it again!

The basic story is simple -- the Soviets have planted a spy at the top levels of the British MI6, and it's George Smiley's job to find who it is. But this is a spy story, and nothing is as it seems. Right from the start, your brain has to work overtime to match names to faces and make sense of all the spy jargon. It doesn't help that the movie continually goes to flashbacks, so you have to figure out what is past and present. But like I said, it's a spy story. That's where the thrill comes from -- not from action scenes, but from the suspense of trying to figure everything out. Because there aren't any big action scenes, you don't miss the big screen so much, and you can go back to parts you don't understand, which makes the Blu-ray DVD format perfect for enjoying this kind of movie. And enjoy it, I did. And so will you!

OVERVIEW:
Things aren’t always as they seem in the Oscar®-nominated, suspenseful, and stylish thriller from director Tomas Alfredson (Let the Right One In), based on the classic novel by John le Carré. Focus Features’ Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy will be available on Blu-ray™Combo Pack with UltraViolet™,on DVD,on Digital Download and On-Demand March 20, 2012, from Universal Studios Home Entertainment. At the height of the Cold War, Britain’s Secret Intelligence Service (SIS), a.k.a. MI6 and code-named the Circus, has been compromised. An ever-watchful former top lieutenant and career spy, George Smiley (Gary Oldman, The Dark Knight, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix ), is called out of retirement by the government to help identify and track a suspected mole at the top of the agency. The list of suspects is narrowed to five men. Even before the startling truth is revealed, the emotional and physical tolls on the players enmeshed in the deadly international spy game will escalate…Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is Academy Award®-nominated for Best Actor (Gary Oldman), Best Adapted Screenplay (Bridget O’Connor & Peter Straughan), and Best Original Score (Alberto Iglesias); and is nominated for 11 BAFTA Awards including Best Film and Best Actor.

Also starring Oscar® winner Colin Firth (The King’s Speech) with Benedict Cumberbatch (“Sherlock”), David Dencik (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), Tom Hardy (Inception), Ciarán Hinds (The Debt), Oscar® nominee John Hurt (Midnight Express), Toby Jones (The Hunger Games), and Mark Strong (Robin Hood), Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is “a pleasurably sly and involving puzzler” (Manohla Dargis, The New York Times) and showcases “easily one of the year’s best pictures – Gary Oldman gives a performance that is flawless in every detail.” (Peter Travers, Rolling Stone).

Included with the Blu-ray™ Combo Pack is an all-new UltraViolet™ copy of the film. UltraViolet™ is the revolutionary new way for consumers to collect movies and TV shows, put them in the cloud and download and stream instantly to computers, tablets and smartphones and soon, consumers can download to devices of their choice too. The Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy Blu-ray™ Combo Pack also includes a Digital Copy of the film which is compatible with iTunes®, iPad®, iPhone®, iPod™ touch, Android or other retail partners. So now, consumers can truly enjoy their movies and TV shows anytime, anywhere, on the platform of their choice!

WordLock Bike Lock review and giveaway

We live in the age of pass codes. We have codes for our home alarm system, codes for the garage door, pin numbers for ATMs, codes for home safes, combination locks for school and gym lockers. And don't even get me started with the gazillion-and-one passwords for online accounts. Each one is supposed to be different. Different lengths, different characters. Numbers, letters, a combination of the two. Some have to be changed every six months for maximum protection.

With so many numbers crowded in my head, I can barely remember my husband's cell phone number.

Fortunately, there's a company called WordLock, that makes my life a bit easier. They've come up with combination locks that use words instead of numbers! OMG -- can you say sliced bread? I first discovered WordLock almost a year ago, when I stumbled upon their four-letter combination bike locks at Target. Neither The Pea nor I can ever remember the 4-digit passcode for her combination cable bike lock, so it was such a relief to have locks with passwords that my boys could actually remember on their own! A couple of months after that, by some happy coincidence, WordLock invited me to review their TextLock word-based padlocks. This time around, they sent me a couple of their bike locks to review.

The first kind they sent me was a Mini-Cable Lock, identical to the one I got for the boys, but in pink. The Pea is so happy! She has started biking to school, so this could not have come at a better time. Her old numerical cable lock has started getting rusty, and she has been so envious of her brothers and their WordLock bike locks. Her new lock winds easily around her bike frame, so it doesn't bother her when she pedals. It's light and flexible and easy for kids to handle. The password is pre-set and cannot be changed, but it's much easier to remember than a 4-digit combination. This is waaay better than your run-of-the-mill kids' bike lock!

WordLock also sent me their regular Bike Lock, which is quite an upgrade from the Mini-Cable Lock. It comes with a mounting bracket, so you can get it on and off your bike easily. It's 5 feet long, so you can wrap it around trees and awkwardly-shaped bike racks. It's made of thick, braided steel, so it deters bike thieves. Best of all, you can set your 4-letter password to any word or letter combination that has meaning for you, so you'll never forget it.

Setting the password couldn't be easier -- even I can do it. There's an inner dial with 2 settings. Just open up the lock, turn the inner dial to "set", set your password, then turn the inner dial to "lock", and voila, you've locked in your password! To reset your password, just go back to the beginning of the previous sentence and start again.

If you're worried that someone might guess your password, don't be: you can set up to 10,000 possible letter combinations. They don't even have to be proper words: you can use acronyms (i.e. BLWL -- Bonggamom Loves Word Lock) or that crazy unique name you gave your child (and they all laughed when you named him Zeek, little did they know you were actually creating an easy-to-remember password).
