Keep babies safe in the sun with Babyganics Mineral-Based Sunscreen

sunburn

The Pea has fair skin, so we're usually pretty vigilant about sun safety, but there are times when we have slipped up.  I'll never forget the time I completely forgot to lather her up with sunscreen for a neighborhood parade, and she ended up with a nasty sunburn. Think it's no big deal?  Studies have shown that suffering one or more blistering sunburns in childhood or adolescence more than doubles a person’s chances of developing potentially-deadly melanoma later in life.   I know it's not easy to remember to apply sunscreen on your child day in and day out, but the benefits are so worth the effort. Here are three tips that can make it a bit easier to keep your child safe in the sun.

1) Invest in sun-protective clothing (clothing made of fabric with build-in SPF factor) that your child can wear every day.
2) Get into the habit of putting a hat on your children from an early age.
3) Keep sunscreen in your entry hallway, your purse, and your car.

And speaking of sunscreen, don't forget to read the label on the sunscreen you put on your kids!  You can't be too careful about the chemicals you put on your child's skin, especially your baby's skin.

Babyganics, the leading manufacturer of naturally safe and effective products for a “baby-safe world,” has introduced a new product to their sunscreen line: Mineral-Based Sunscreen lotion (50+SPF).  I was given a sample to review and I think it's great!  It doesn't smell like it's full of fragrance or nasty chemicals (and it isn't).  Like all mineral-based sunscreens, it's pretty thick, so you need to rub it in well to get it to absorb into the skin (otherwise your baby ends up with lots of white patches!), but it's definitely not as stubborn as many mineral-based sunscreens out there. It feels more like a lotion that a paste, so you're more likely to apply it regularly.  And it's good to know that Babyganics does not contain any PABA, Parabens, or Phthalates!

Here are some great features of Babyganics Mineral-based Sunscreen:

  • Provides broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection (SPF 50+)
  • Non-chemical, non-whitening formula absorbs easily to skin
  • No PABA, Parabens, nano-particles, Phthalates or fragrances
  • Pediatrician and dermatologist tested
  • Non-allergenic, tear free
  • Contains Babyganics’ exclusive NeoNourish Seed Oil Blend that nurtures and supports baby’s skin.
  • Water resistant for up to 80 minutes

Babyganic’s Mineral-Based Sunscreen lotion (50+SPF) retails for $9.99 and is available for purchase at Babies ‘R’ Us, Buy Buy Baby, Target, and online at Diapers.com.

Leapfrog Download Card giveaway

Today is Mother's Day!  It has been a busy few weeks for me, attending blog events, closing out my duties as PTA president, starting next year's duties as PTA VP of communications, navigating the end-of-the-schoolyear/soccer tournament/dance recital/piano recital craziness, and starting a new job!

Like many of you moms out there, I barely have a moment to myself, so one of the nicest treats I can get as a mom is a few kid-free hours today!  Today is one day I'm not going to worry about whether the kids have practiced their piano or had too much screen time :)  The last thing I want to do is yell and scold.  After all, having kids is what made me a mother, so I wouldn't be the guest of honor today if it wasn't for my kids!

To celebrate moms AND kids, I'm giving away a gift card from one of my favorite kid-friendly brands, Leapfrog.  One lucky Bonggamom Finds reader will receive a $20 Leapfrog Digital Download Card, which can be used to download your choice of hundreds of learning games, eBooks, audio books, apps, and more from Leapfrog.com.  Hopefully it will free up a bit of time for you and treat your kids to some fun and learning at the same time!

Giveaway: Celebrate Science with NCircle Entertainment

As parents, we want to raise our children with self confidence and the belief that they can be anything they want to be when they grow up. Sadly, the struggle to attract young women into STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) fields continues.

If your daughter loves math and science, there's no time like the present to let them know that math and science are cool -- and if you have a son, there's no time like the present to let them know that girls can be just as good as boys! You can nurture their interest from the start by introducing them to shows like Sid the Science Kid and the Octonauts, and even the Cat in the Hat.  These shows spark kids' interest in the natural world because the characters they love are curious about how the world works!  Below are 3 great DVD's from NCircle Entertainment to check out -- and NCircle Entertainment will be sending all 3 DVDs to one lucky Bonggamom Finds reader!

DVD

The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That!: Space is the Place
Join the Cat in the Hat on a trip into space, and learn why the cosmos is such a cool place! In this new DVD, the Cat and his friends visit each of the planets, the sun and the stars. Young viewers can learn why day turns to night thanks to our friend, the sun.

Sid the Science Kid DVD

Sid the Science Kid: What is a Rainbow?
After a rainstorm, the sun comes out and Sid spots a big rainbow in the sky. He races inside to tell his parents, but by the time he brings them outside to see it, the rainbow is gone. Sid and his friends investigate rainbows at school where they discover that rainbows can only form when light passes through water droplets.

Themes explored include: Where does light come from? How are shadows made? How are rainbows created? What causes darkness?

Octonauts DVD

Octonauts: To the Gup-X!
This DVD includes the following exciting adventures: Captain Barnacles leads a mission to rescue Dashi, who is trapped inside a giant whale shark; Kwazii takes to the skies to retrieve a precious book from a school of flying fish; Peso tries to bandage a Great White Shark without becoming his lunch – and much more! Plus, in a special extra feature, Tweak & Tunip tell you everything you ever wanted to know about the Gup-X!

Required Entry
Leave a comment on this post and share a suggestion for nurturing kids' interest in science and math.

Tracks AIR Wireless Headphones by SOL Republic

Tracks AIR Wireless headphones by SOL REPUBLIC

If you've read my blog for any length of time, you'll know that one of my pet hi-tech peeves is tangled cords.  The OCD in me cannot stand the sight of ugly tangled cords, much less have the patience to untangle them!  I'm forever looking for gadgets and workarounds to keep them neatly wound and bound.

Wake up, Bonggamom!  It's the 21st century!  Maybe the answer isn't the perfect cord winder.  Maybe I need to think outside the box... or beyond the cord.  In other words, why have a cord at all?  We're in the age of Bluetooth and wireless, after all!

Enter SOL Republic, one of the hottest audio brands around. They make amazing performance headphones that look as good as they sound.  And even though they've partnered with musicians like and DJs like Deadmau5 and Steve Aoki, their products are relatively affordable (nothing over $250, most in the $100-$200 range).  Last year they introduced the Tracks Air, a set of wireless on-ear headphones that will spoil you for anything else.  SOL Republic sent me a pair of Tracks Air, and they are the perfect way for this overstressed mom to get away when I don't have the time or money for a getaway!  Just give me a comfy sofa (or bathtub filled with scented bubbles), some chocolate, a good book (or an iPad to browse the web), and Tracks Air, and I can be in my own world for hours....
Tracks AIR Wireless headphones by SOL REPUBLIC

My new Tracks Air headphones aren't just great when I'm relaxing, they're great when I'm busy.  Since it's wireless, you're not tethered to your music device.  You can leave it on a nearby table or shelf, and you have your hands free to cook, fold laundry, garden, wash your car, practice archery, or do whatever you want to do.  You can even vacuum the living room if that's what you love to do -- and even if you hate vacuuming, the music might help you hate it just a little bit less!
Tracks AIR Wireless headphones by SOL REPUBLIC

The headphones are super comfy -- each speaker is nicely padded, and you can slide the speakers up and down the headband to fit your head size.  Since these headphones are wireless, you need to charge them before you can use them, but a full charge can last as long as 15 hours.  The sound they deliver is wonderful.
Tracks AIR Wireless headphones by SOL REPUBLIC

The unit includes a left and right speaker (I wish there were a bigger "L" and "R" printed on the inside of the headphones so it was easier to tell right from left, and up from down!), a headband, a cable with an inline microphone (if you don't want to use it as a wirelessly), and a USB cable for charging (just the cable, though, no charger). I may never go back to tangled wires again!

All-day comfort for your feet with Reebok Skyscape

I participated in a campaign on behalf of Mom Central Consulting (#MC) for Reebok. I received a product sample to facilitate my review and a promotional item as a thank you for participating.”

I recently started working at the boys' school as Student Activities Director.  That's a fancy title for someone who plays games with the kids and makes sure everyone is having fun!  So far, I'm loving the job.  I get to think up of fun things to do at lunchtime -- last week I was the most popular person at school because I turned on the hose on the hottest day of the year (so far) and sprayed any kid who asked!

The job is a lot of fun, but at the end of my shift I am exhausted.  I'm outdoors the entire time, running and playing with kids who have boundless energy, so I never start work without a good breakfast, sunscreen, a hat.... and a good pair of shoes.

I recently had the opportunity to review the Skyscape Runaround by Reebok (available at Kohl's stores and online), and these walking shoes are just what I need! I can run around with the kids at lunch, and my feet don't ache afterwards.  The upper and the sole are made of a foam-like material, so your foot is cushioned all around.  It's nice and stretchy, and it's seamless, so nothing rubs on your foot and there's no need to break the shoe in -- it's comfy from the start!  The shoe doesn't have arch support, but the sole is soft and cushiony, so it molds to the bottoms of your feet and cushions every step.  These shoes are great for daily wear -- you can go from the playground to the grocery store to the PTA meeting to the bank to the library.

The Skyscape is so comfy, you'd think it would look like some kind of ugly orthopedic shoe.... but it's really quite stylish. Even The Pea approves of my footwear choice -- she's allowing me to wear it in front of her middle school friends!  It has a nice lean silhouette that make my huge feet seem slimmer.  I can wear it with yoga pants, capris, jeans, even skirts!    I chose the black pair with white soles and shoelaces, and I love how it goes with everything.  Last week I ran into a blogger friend, Terri Ann, who is also trying out Skyscapes.  She got the navy pair with electric blue soles and shoelaces -- that was my second choice, and seeing it on Terri Ann's feet I almost regretted getting my black ones because they are also so cute.

Because these shoes are made of a foam-like material, I recommend wearing them with socks.  The foam tends to make my feet sweat, especially when I've been wearing them all day (which I've been doing because they're so comfy), and when it's a hot day (which pretty much describes every day in Northern California for the next 7 months).  Also, because they don't have proper arch supports, I wouldn't wear them for running or working out -- although the thick foam sole does provide some support for everyday activities.   My new Skyscapes are definitely getting a lot of usage on the playground and around the neighborhood. And I'll definitely be trying them out the next time I visit a theme park!

Put some zing in your step with ZBar Iced Lemon Cookie

Have you tried Clif KID's new ZBAR flavor?  Iced Lemon Cookie tastes just like a lemon creme cookie, and it's way healthier!  ZBARs have no high fructose corn syrup, no hydrogenated oils, no preservatives, artificial flavors, or trans fats.  It's a wholesome snack that I feel good about when I give it to my kids -- although I have to admit, the Iced Lemon Cookie flavor tastes so good, I'm always tempted to keep it to myself!  Ever since Clif KID sent us a few Iced Lemon Cookie bars to review, I've been hooked.  They're not easy to find, because they're new, but they're definitely worth the effort because they taste so good!  I recently started a job leading lunchtime activities at my sons' elementary school, and I've found myself tucking a Clif KID bar in my pocket before I set off for work.  Playing with kids takes a huge amount of energy, and Clif KID keeps me going until I can get back home and have my own lunch!

Learning skills and discovering passions at Galileo Summer Quest

This was The Pea at her very first Galileo Summer Quest camp.  She was an incoming 5th grader, and she had the time of her life learning to design and sew her own outfits.  GSQ is where she first learned how to use a sewing machine.  She's now an incoming 8th grader, and one of her hobbies is designing and sewing outfits for dolls. She also continues to wow her friends and classmates with her creative Halloween costumes.  It has been three years, and she STILL uses the skills she learned at that camp!

This summer, it's my boys' turn.  Jammy and 3Po have been dying to try Galileo Summer Quest ever since that first summer when their big sister had so much fun.  We would drop The Pea off at GSQ, and they would see check-in tables welcoming campers to some of the coolest, most interesting activities ever.  Videogame design!  Digital photography!  Cooking!  Go-kart making!  Each GSQ major is designed to help kids delve deep into a subject they're interested in, for the entire week.  At the end of the week, they will have learned some pretty interesting things about their chosen major.  They will have completed a significant project in that field.  And they will have immersed themselves in the Galileo philosophy of innovation, trial and error, experimentation, and collaboration.   No wonder 3Po and Jammy can't wait!

This year the boys have decided they want to try out the Inventor's Workshop major.  It was a tough decision -- some other majors calling their name were Chefology, Video Game Design, Go-Kart Builders and Cool Chemistry -- but the lure of inventing their own contraptions was just too great to ignore.  They'll be getting down and dirty with circuits, wiring, and materials.  They'll be exploring the principles of electrical engineering structural engineering, and mechanical engineering.  They'll be learning about prototypes, schematics, and user testing.  This is going to be like all the cool shop classes I took in college, put together!  I couldn't be more excited for them.    In fact, I kind of wish I was going to camp with them :)

This is the wonderful thing about what Galileo Summer Quest did for The Pea, and what it could do for 3Po and Jammy-- even just a single week's immersion in a subject they're interested in could lead to something bigger.  It could become their hobby, their passion.  If just one week can do that, imagine what a whole summer could do -- it could help shape what they do in middle school, high school and beyond!

Check out all of Galileo Summer Quest's awesome summer majors available to kids entering grades 5 through 8.  They have 18 camp locations scattered throughout the Bay Area, so chances are you'll find one near you!

Disclosure: I received a free week of camp for two, as a thank you for writing a series of posts about Galileo Summer Quest. The views and opinions expressed here are my own.

#SprintMom Giveaway: HTC One Max

Sprint Framily plan
I participated in a campaign on behalf of Mom Central Consulting (#MC) for Sprint. I received a product sample to facilitate my review and to thank me for participating.

I have been a loyal Sprint customer for almost 15 years! I have never been tempted in the slightest to change providers because Sprint has always offered me exceptional value for my money and great customer service. That's why I'm excited to announce that I've been named as a Sprint Ambassador for the next 12 months! As a #SprintMom, I'll be trying out various Sprint devices and service options, and sharing my opinions with you.

Now that my youngest kids are getting older, they'll needing phones -- and having FIVE people in the family on a phone plan can add up.  I'm happy with my Sprint Unlimited Data plan and I don't want to switch, but I don't want my kids to have an expensive, unlimited data plan.  That's why I'm delighted to hear about the new Sprint Framily plan.  Here are the deets:

With the Sprint Framily plan, you and up to 10 friends, family members, and even coworkers and parents from the soccer team can be a part of a Framily group with unlimited talk, text and 1GB of data each, while on the Sprint network. Each of the members on the Framily plan receives a separate bill with no annual service contracts or early termination fees, all for as little as $25 a month per line when you have 7 – 10 members in the Framily group.

How cool is that?  With the five of us, we would pay just $35 per line, per month.  If we found just 2 more people, the cost per line would go down to $25 per month! I could still keep my Unlimited Data by paying an extra $20 per month, just for my line -- everyone else can stay on 1GB data (hey, I work in social media, I need unlimited!).  What a great way to save!

Need more incentive to join the Sprint Framily Plan?  How about some great discounts?

Take advantage of special Sprint Framily discounts

Sprint Framily Plan
For a limited time, new customers who bring their number to Sprint and sign up for a Sprint Framily Plan can receive up to $300 in credit for their current phone and a Visa® Prepaid Card worth up to $350 to cover switching fees. This offer will be available exclusively at Sprint stores and online at Sprint.com from April 4 through May 8.
