Why you should stay on-site at the Universal Orlando Resort

Sign at entryway

We had the pleasure of staying at the Loews Royal Pacific Resort for our recent Family Forward Orlando vacation, and whenever I dream about going back, I can't imagine staying anywhere else.  Not only is the Royal Pacific an amazing resort, we also enjoyed benefits only available to Universal Resort's on-site hotels (Loews Portofino Hotel, Hard Rock Hotel and Loews Royal Pacific Resort).  These benefits are so great, they're well worth the price of staying there (I know, I've checked!). Here's a list of reasons you should stay on-site when you visit the Universal Orlando Resort:

Early Park Admission
On-site hotel guests get early park admission (1 hour before regular opening) to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Islands of Adventure.  That extra hour lets you enjoy Hogsmeade with far less people, which means far shorter lines.  That's crucial for Harry Potter's Forbidden Journey and Ollivander's Wand Shop, where wait times often exceed 1 hour (neither has an Express Pass line).  Thanks to that extra hour, we were able to ride the Dragon Challenge roller coaster four times in succession, in the front row!

Hogwarts Castle

Universal Express Unlimited ride access
The Universal Express Pass lets users skip regular ride lines and use a special line only for Express Pass holders.  The Express line is never more than 5-10 minutes long, so this can really save you a lot of wait time on popular rides, which can have wait time of over an hour during peak periods. Having experienced the benefits of the Express pass first-hand, I don't think I could visit Universal theme parks without it.

What's more, you get an Unlimited Express Pass, which means you can use the Express line unlimited times!  Regular Express Pass tickets only let you use the Express Pass line once per ride.  This benefit pays for itself -- staying on-site can actually be cheaper than staying at an off-site hotel and purchasing the Unlimited Express pass (yes, I've checked -- my calculations are on this post).

Complimentary shuttles between hotels and theme parks
The on-site hotels are the closest hotels to the theme parks, but they are still a 15-minute walk away (20-25 minutes if you have a toddler who likes to stop for ladybugs and weird-looking leaves).  Each hotel has complimentary water taxi service that takes you to Universal Citywalk, so all you have to do is cross a bridge and you're at the entrance to Universal Studios or Islands of Adventure.  Boats leave every 20 minutes, so if you've just missed a boat it is faster to walk, but it's a godsend at the end of the day when your feet are tired and sore and you would rather wait for 30 minutes than walk another step.
hotel boat to theme parks

Souvenir Room Keys with charging privileges
Each guest, kids included, receives a personalized room key card with their name and dates of stay. These do more than just let you into your room: you can also use your room key to charge expenses to your hotel bill, like room service or restaurant charges.  This even works inside both Universal theme parks for both restaurants and shops!  This feature is disabled on kids' key cards, but you can activate it for your teenagers.  Don't throw your 3 year-old's card away, though, you'll need it to get your Express Passes!

Complimentary package delivery
The golden rule of theme park shopping is Wait Until the End of the Day, so you're not burdened with plastic bags.  But it's not always practical to leave the shopping till the end, because not all the merchandise is available at the stores near the entrance/exit.  On-site guests don't have this restriction, because they get complimentary delivery of merchandise they've purchased anywhere in the resort, so no-one has to rush all the way to the back of the park to buy a Quaffle Ball at Dervish & Banges or Exploding Bonbons at Honeydukes.

Beautiful surroundings and great service
Loews Royal Pacific is an amazing resort, one of the nicest we've been to. The setting is gorgeous -- with the Orlando humidity, it's so easy to imagine that you're left the US and landed on a tropical island! Here are a few photos to illustrate, starting with the elephant fountain in the lobby's central courtyard:
Outdoor fountain

Our standard room had two comfy queen beds, and enough room for a rollaway bed ($15 per night). Fridges are available to rent at $15 per night.
Guest room interior

The pool area is phenomenal.  There's a water volleyball area, a white sand beach area, a hot tub, and a kids' water play area with water jets and fountains.
Pool area

The attention to detail is astounding, both in decor and in service.  From afternoon juice in the lobby to turndown service to friendly smiles, we really felt like pampered guests.  For more photos, check out my Royal Pacific Resort photo set on Flickr:

I haven't been to either the Hard Rock Hotel or the Loews Portofino, but I imagine they're just as nice (some might say better, but being an island girl myself, I'm partial to the tropical theme!).   Universal has taken a lot of care to ensure that each hotel gives guests a real "get away from the everyday" experience.

Other benefits
Other benefits include priority seating at restaurants, Universal Orlando character dining, character wake-up calls and complimentary shuttles to nearby theme parks.

Free Universal Express pass for on-site hotel guests: Is It Worth It?

Universal Express passes

If you plan to visit the Universal Resort in Orlando at any point in time, I highly recommend purchasing Universal Express passes along with your theme park tickets.  These passes let you skip the regular lines, and they were instrumental in giving my family an enjoyable, stress-free vacation.
Universal Express passes

The regular Express Pass costs as little as $20 per person, but you can only use these once per ride per day.  If you want more bang for your buck, you should get the Unlimited Express pass, which lets you use the Express line as many times as you want, all day.  I know, I know, they cost extra money on top of an already expensive vacation.... but honestly, I would much rather stay at the resort for 2 days and splurge on the Express passes than stay at the resort for 4 days without them, because you can enjoy the same amount of rides (or more) in a fraction of the time, with zero stress.

In fact, those Express Passes are so useful, I would recommend staying at a Universal Orlando Resort on-site hotel (Loews Portofino, Hard Rock Hotel or Loews Royal Pacific) so you can get the benefit of free Unlimited Express Passes.
Loews Royal Pacific, a Flickr photoset by bonggamom

But on-site hotels are so expensive, you say.  True, you do pay a premium to enjoy the benefits of staying so close to the Universal theme parks.

Or do you??   The free Unlimited Express pass benefit for on-site guests is so huge, it actually pays for itself.  I let my inner geek take control and did some simple calculations to see whether the free Unlimited Express Pass is really worth paying more for an on-site hotel.

Option A:  Stay at a nearby hotel, purchase park tickets with Unlimited Express Pass
I used rates from the Holiday Inn Orlando, which is just across the street (walking distance) from the Universal Orlando Resort (note, I have nothing against the Holiday Inn, in fact this one is a Universal Partner hotel, I'm just using it for comparison purposes).  The rate for a standard room, checking in on 9/19/13 and staying for 3 night,s is $92 per night.  Also, I used rates for tickets+Unlimited Express from the Universal Orlando online ticket store, for 2 adults and 2 children ($697.96 for 1 day, $939.96 for 2 days, $1097.96 for 3 days).

1 day
$697.96 + $92 = $789.96

2 days
$939.96 + ($92 *2) = $1123.96

3 days
$1097.96 + ($92*3) = $1373.96

Option B: Stay at an on-site hotel (with free Unlimited Express Pass), purchase standard park tickets
I used rates from Loews Royal Pacific Resort, which is an on-site hotel.  The rate for a standard room, checking in on 9/19/13 and staying for 3 nights, is $201 per night.  We stayed at the Royal Pacific, and it's one of the nicest hotel resorts we've been to (check out photos of the Royal Pacific on my Flickr page!).  Also, I used rates for standard tickets from the Universal Orlando online ticket store, for 2 adults and 2 children ($500 for 1 day, $567 for 2 days, $617.96 for 3 days).

1 day
$500 + $201 = $701

2 days
$567 + ($201*2)= $969

3 days
$617.96 + ($201*3)= $1220.96

..... and the winner is, Option B!!  Staying on-site is still cheaper, even when you compare it to an off-site hotel that's half the price.  And this doesn't even take into account the non-quantifiable benefits of staying on-site, like early admission to the park, complimentary merchandise delivery to your room, and an amazing hotel that really makes you feel like you've stepped into another world:
Pool area

Note, I didn't take any taxes and fees into account in either option, and these are off-season prices, so the actual cost and savings will vary.  I also didn't take into account any park ticket discounts you might be able to find.  Also, the Hard Rock Hotel and Loews Portofino are slightly more expensive ($228 and $251 per night, respectively, for the same dates I used in the calculations above).

You might find a really cheap hotel or stay with your Aunt Agnes and get to use her car for the week.  Your kids might order room service and drive the bill up tenfold.  You might decide not to bother with Express Passes because you like waiting hours in line.  In other words, I can't promise that staying on-site will always be cheaper than staying off-site and purchasing the Unlimited Express passes online.  But it can be.

My point is, don't let the higher cost of a Universal Orlando Resort on-site hotel discourage you from staying there.  The benefits of staying there could more than justify the extra cost!  Do your own cost-benefit analysis similar to mine to see actual dollar amounts before you make a decision.

Mosaic: How to capture your vacation in 20 photos

I've been suffering from a severe case of vacation fever.  A couple of weeks ago we visited Universal Studios in Orlando, and had the time of our lives.  3Po and Jammy actually shed tears as we left for the airport on our last day.  It was such a great vacation, and we can't stop reliving all the best moments:  "Remember when we rode the Dragon Challenge four times in a row?"... "Remember that awesome apple pie?"..."No, remember the butterbeer!".

Naturally, we've preserved the best of our memories on photos.  We took almost a thousand on this 5-day vacation alone!  Alfie is a Top-20 kind of guy, so having an app like Mosaic is a godsend.  Mosaic takes your top 20 photos on your iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch and turns them into a beautiful photo book.

The best part about Mosaic is how simple it is.  You can literally create a photo book in 5 seconds.  Just choose 20 photos in the order you want them to appear on your book, click "Create Photo Book", type in your name, address and payment info, and you're done.

To keep things simple, customization is minimal:

* You can determine the order in which the photos appear.
* You can choose whether your photos appear on a white or black background.
* You can (sort of) choose which photos appear on the photo collage cover page (it's a randomized process but there is a "reshuffle" button if you don't like the photos that appear).
* You get one photo per page, no editing or cropping or captions.

It sounds restrictive, but it's meant to keep things simple.  The restrictions didn't bother me because I worked around them.  I just edited the photo itself: cropping to a square (the finished book is 7x7 so a square photo maximizes the page usage), adding text directly to the photo, and combining multiple photos into a photo collage.

As promised, the photo book arrived 4 or 5 business days after I ordered it.  The resultig 7x7 book is absolutely beautiful. From the decorative box to the hardbound linen cover to the matte pages, the Mosaic photo book screams understated elegance . That's an oxymoron, isn't it; maybe whispers would be a better term.

But I do want to scream my delight at how this photo book turned out.  Definitely give Mosaic a try. There's no easier, prettier way to capture memories of an amazing summer trip.

Keep summer in your fridge with Simply Lemonade

Summer may be over but you can still keep the taste of summer in your fridge by stocking up on the great varieties of Simply Lemonade.  We received samples of four flavors:  regular Simply Lemonade as well as their new Simply Lemonade with Blueberry, Simply Lemonade with Raspberry, and Simply Lemonade with Mango.  We can't decide which ones we like best!  The tartness of the lemonade balances out the sweetness of the accompanying fruit, and they all taste so refreshing.  The ingredient list is as simple as its name: all varieties contain water, sugar, lemon juice and natural flavors (I wish they would say just what these natural flavors are, though!), as well as blueberry puree, mango puree or raspberry puree.  Just like summer, they're sweet and simple, but unlike summer, you can enjoy them all year round.

Giveaway: Back-to-School with Ross Dress for Less

Back to School with Ross Dress for Less
I was compensated with a Ross gift card for this post

Labor Day has come and gone, and all around the country kids are going back to school.  Our back to school routine is never complete without a trip to Ross Dress for Less, and this school year was no exception.   To make things more exciting, Ross sent us a $25 gift card to see what back to school outfit we could come up with.  The lucky recipient of the gift card?  My daughter.  She has grown so much over the summer that none of her shorts are long enough to pass her school's dress code!  I got her a pair of casual shorts for just $4.99, and I would have gotten her more, but this denim jacket caught her eye:
Back to School with Ross Dress for Less

This kind of jacket could easily cost $30, but we got it at Ross for just $12.99!

She also could not resist this brand name zip-up sweatshirt.  How could I say no, when it was on clearance for just $7.99? Together, all 3 outfits were just $1 over my $25 budget!
Back to School with Ross Dress for Less

There were so many more things I could have bought -- backpacks, jeans, shoes -- but I contented myself with stocking up on on birthday presents (a toy that I saw for $20 at another store was just $10!), because 3Po and Jammy are extra-popular this year and have already been invited to three birthday parties in September.  Well, for now, anyway.  Once the kids' backpacks burst or they start wearing holes in their jeans and shoes, you can bet I'll be back at Ross to see what's in stock.  Shopping at Ross Dress for Less is like going on a treasure hunt -- you never quite know what you're going to find, but it's sure to be great!

Win a $125 Ross gift card
Join the Ross Dress for Less Back-to-School Fashion Face Off promotion on Facebook for the chance to win one of three $125 Ross gift cards!  It ends on September 6, so hurry and vote for your favorite back-to-school outfit.

Is Your Coin Lithium Battery Packaging safe? (Energizer review and giveaway)

September 1-7 is National Childhood Injury Prevention Week!  Obviously kids will be kids, and accidents are a part of childhood (as witnessed by the daily orange juice spills in our kitchen!), but some accidents are more serious than others, and it's those we want to prevent.

Ingesting dangerous materials -- poisons, magnets, batteries -- definitely do NOT fall under the "let kids make mistakes and learn from them".  Core lithium batteries, for example, are found in so many everyday items like remote controls, car keys, flameless candles and kids' books with sound.  They're small, but deadly -- they can cause serious chemical burns in just two hours after accidentally being swallowed.

That's why Energizer has teamed up with the National Safety Council to share some important tips for preventing injuries from the ingestion of coin lithium batteries:

The 4 S’s of Coin Lithium Battery Safety
· STORE devices that use coin lithium batteries out of reach of children
· SECURE the battery compartments of devices
· SELECT battery packaging that meets federal guidelines for child resistance, such as Energizer’s coin lithium battery packaging
· SHARE this information with your friends and family

The right battery packaging is a simple but effective way to ensure kids' safety.  Energizer was the first to voluntarily develop packaging for its 20-mm coin lithium batteries to meet Consumer Product Safety Commission's child-resistant packaging guidelines.  In order to meet those guidelines, product packaging is tested with groups of children ages 42-51 months and senior adults ages 50-70.  A total of 80% of children tested must not be able to open the package within 10 minutes, and 90% of the adults tested need to be able to open it within 5 minutes.

Energizer sent us packages of their coin lithium batteries, along with some other goodies, so we could see for ourselves what "child resistant" truly means. They also sent us a package of coin lithium batteries from another brand so we could see which one was easier to open.

I asked Alfie to try and open both packages; he predicted the Energizer package would be much more difficult to open because it was encased in plastic while the other package had a cardboard backing.  He was right: he ripped the cardboard package open in less than 12 seconds.  The Energizer package, however, would NOT open, no matter how much he smashed it and thrashed it!  He grew bored after a minute and a half, and hopefully your kids will too :)

Of course, both products will open easily with a pair of scissors, but if your child has unsupervised access to sharp scissors, opening and swallowing a package of coin lithium batteries is not the first safety problem you have to address!  Thank you, Energizer, for designing your packaging with children's safety in mind!

Win an Energizer Prize Package
One lucky Bonggamom Finds reader will win an Energizer prize package consisting of:

Leapfrog introduces its latest LeapPad: the LeapPad Ultra

LeapPad Ultra, a review by bonggamom

When Leapfrog introduced its LeapPad learning tablet a few years ago, I wondered what they
could do to top it.  Now I know: their latest version, the LeapPad Ultra, has really (pardon the pun) leapfrogged its predecessors.  Leapfrog sent us a couple of LeapPad Ultras to try out, and my boys have played with it even more than they played with the LeapPad and the LeapPad 2. Considering they are 1 year older, that says a lot!    I feel like Leapfrog actually listened to the feedback they received from parents, because the LeapPad Ultra has addressed many of the issues I had with the previous versions:

LeapPad Ultra, a review by bonggamom

The first big change is something you can't miss:  the LeapPad Ultra has a much bigger screen (7 inches versus 5 inches for earlier versions.  The bigger screen is great because young kids may not have the fine motor control to navigate smaller screens.

The second big change:  A rechargeable battery, my favorite new feature!  This was a frequent complaint of mine with the older versions so I'm ecstatic that Leapfrog has listened to me and other parents.  Now we don't have to spend a fortune on batteries.

The third big change: the Ultra now has built-in wifi!  Now parents can connect their kids' tablets to their home wifi network.  It makes downloading apps onto the tablet much, much easier.
LeapPad Ultra, a review by bonggamom

The LeapPad Ultra takes full advantage of its wi-fi connectivity by providing a kid-safe browser so kids can enjoy videos straight from the web.  The browser only shows websites that have been pre-approved by Leapfrog.  I appreciate Leapfrog's concern for kids' security, but I find the browser too restrictive and I wish parents could enter their own websites in a "safe" list.
LeapPad Ultra, a review by bonggamom

Another great feature that wifi provides is peer-to-peer gaming.  If you have two kids, get each kid their own LeapPad Ultra, and they will be able to play games with each other!  They can play simple games like tic-tac-toe....
LeapPad Ultra, a review by bonggamom

... they can visit each other's Pet Pads and chat with each other....
LeapPad Ultra, a review by bonggamom

With apps like Turbo and other racing games, they can even race against each other!
LeapPad Ultra, a review by bonggamom

This makes the LeapPad Ultra  a lot more like a gaming console, so kids will still be playing with the LeapPad Ultra at an older age.

LeapPad Ultra, a review by bonggamom

As always, I love Leapfrog's educational focus.  All LeapPad games help develop specific academic skills, and kids can play at a level that is suited to their age and level of development.  Leapfrog has perfected the art of combining fun (for example, in a racing game, kids can race cars against each other) and education (in the same game, kids have to answer math questions in order to build their own racing car)
LeapPad Ultra, a review by bonggamom

The new LeapPad Ultra has been introduced at a slightly higher price point, $150 instead of $100, but I think the expanded features more than justify the added investment.  Get it for your 4 year old so he/she can grow with it, and you'll get a long, happy life out of it!

Encyclopaedia Britannica introduces the Britannica Kids touchTAB

Encyclopedia Britannica played a huge part in my education; without the internet or even a decent public library, our set of Encyclopedia Britannica encyclopedias helped get me through countless book reports, science projects and term papers.  Nowadays it seems like knowledge is only a search term away, but you can never quite trust all the information that appears on the internet, and there's no substitute for a respected, trustworthy brand like Encyclopedia Britannica.

That's why I was delighted to see that Encyclopedia Britannica has lent their name to a great new learning product for kids: the Britannica Kids touchTAB.  Made by Tek NÄ“k Toys, Inc, it's an interactive tablet that helps kids learn cool facts about a variety of subjects.

We recently got the chance to try out the Britannica Kids touchTAB, and found it to be a nifty little gadget that makes a great road trip companion.  Although the name suggests a high-tech tablet, it's actually a simple device.  It's electronic, but it doesn't have a screen.  Instead, uses interchangeable cartridges attached to illustrated cardboard panels.
Encyclopedia Britannica TouchTAB

To operate the touchTAB, kids slide the cartridges into the tablet slot so the images on the panels face outward, and it looks like a "screen".  They turn the unit on, and touch images on the "screen".  Each image has sensor marks, so when an image is pressed, kids will hear facts about the image.  The touchTAB comes with 3 cartridges: North American Mammals, Australian Mammals and African Mammals.  Parents can purchase additional content packs with 3 cartridges each: Days of the Dinosaur, Exploring Space, Incredible Earth and Amazing Ocean Life.

Obviously, the touchTAB isn't the most high-tech gadget out there.  But it's surprisingly rich in content.   There are actually 3 levels of content, and each image contains a different set of facts for your child to discover.  Kids graduate from one level to another by entering Challenge mode and answering a series of questions to open up a higher level.  Each cartridge has over 200 facts and questions!

What's more, having a simple device does have its advantages.  For one thing, it's really lightweight.  For another, it doesn't guzzle up batteries.  It also doesn't require an internet connection.  All those features make the touchTAB a great solution for car trips and plane rides.  Best of all, at $39.99, the touchTAB is really affordable, which means even aunts and uncles and distant relatives can afford to give nieces/nephews/family friends a touchTAB as a birthday or holiday present.

The Britannica Kids touchTab and all additional themed cartridges are currently sold at Target.com and will soon be available at other retailers such as Walmart.com, Toyrsus.com, Amazon, Fingerhut, and Sensational Beginning. The touchTab has a suggested retail price of $39.99.
