Give your Home a Halloween Glow with PartyLite (Giveaway)

I love decorating the house for Halloween.  Every year I like to give the house a spooky air with tombstones in the front yard, petrifying portraits on the walls, terrifying table runners on our dining room table, creepy candles on the mantel.  The people who visit our house love looking in all the nooks and crannies and discovering little Halloween decor, like the vase full of miniature skulls in our bathroom.   It's really the small details that count:  even just a group of lit candles can give your room just the right Halloween touch!

Every year, one of my favorite home decor companies, PartyLite, comes up with a wonderful Halloween collection, and this year is no exception.  Check out some of my favorites:

How cool are these Spooky Eyes Hurricane candle sleeves?  Just put a candle or tealight inside and watch the eyes glow!

These skeleton tealight holders are so cute!  I would use them with battery-operated tealights and put them on our living room bookshelves to give it a playful touch.

Isn't this a great idea -- fill these glass holders with candy corn or eyeballs or miniature pumpkins, then top with a tealight. The best thing about it is that you can change the decorative accents to fit the season.  Think holly berries for the holidays, candy conversation hearts for Valentine's, you get the picture!

This Trick or Treat Fragrance Warmer can be used two ways:  it can give your house a wonderful scent when used as a fragrance warmer, or it can give any pillar candle an extra-special Halloween touch.

PartyLite sent me the Trick or Treat Fragrance Warmer and an orange-and-black striped pillar candle so I could try it both ways.  I just love the way they give a warm glow (not to mention a lovely fragrance) to our home!

I actually prefer using a white pillar candle to using the orange-and-black-striped pillar candle when using the Trick or Treat Fragrance Warmer as a candle holder.  The white really brings out the whimsical design, with its spooky trees and pumpkins!

A look inside the 2012 Toyota FJ Cruiser

This week my fellow Toyota TWIN bloggers are being treated to a fantastic experience:  driving up and down the California coast test-driving a variety of Toyota vehicles, "glamping" at a luxury resort on the outskirts of Santa Barbara, ocean kayaking, and wine tasting.

Unfortunately, I'm not with them.  The kids have too many things to do at school and after school, and Alfie would have had to not just work from home, but take 3 days off, in order to take my place.  We're going on an extended vacation in December and he needs to save up those precious vacation days, so I'm stuck at home while the #ToyotaWomen live the good life.  Don't get me wrong, I'm so proud that 3Po and Jammy will be playing the Tweedle Twins at their school's Alice in Wonderland production, but somehow chaperoning dress rehearsals pales in comparison next to roasting s'mores on the beach with some amazing women.

I think Toyota must know how disappointed I was that I couldn't make it, because they sent me a 2012 Toyota FJ Cruiser to test drive for the next week, so I could go on some adventures of my own. It arrived yesterday morning, and here are my initial impressions:

This is definitely not one of your bland, soul-less vehicles that looks like it came straight off the most automated of assembly lines.   It is chunky and bold and unapologetically IN YOUR FACE. It reminds me of a Hummer (which I hate), but also of a Toyota Land Cruiser (which I love).  I used to ride around in Land Cruisers when I spent my childhood summers on my uncle's sugar cane hacienda, and this has all the ruggedness of the Land Cruiser will a hint of gangsta attitude.  My boys are convinced it's a secret army tank, and on their first ride in it they amused themselves by looking for the hidden missile launchers and ejector seat buttons.  As for me, I can almost feel myself transforming from a minivan mom into a badass babe when I drive it.  Love it or hate it, the FJ Cruiser definitely has character!

The 3-person rear seat is wide enough for 3 adults, with plenty of headroom, but it's short on legroom.   The lack of legroom is fine when you have kids -- but the access-style rear doors (the hinge is nearer the trunk) are not so fine.  Rear seat passengers cannot open the rear doors unless the front door is open -- which means the kids cannot open the doors to let themselves out.  That's a serious inconvenience when you're dropping kids off at school soccer practice!

The interior is strictly no-frills.  Seat adjustment is manual.  There's just 1 USB port.  But once again, the vibe I get is UNAPOLOGETIC, like those fripperies just don't belong in the FJ Cruiser, almost as though it would be wimpy to expect a GPS or leather seats here. Fortunately, it's not too wimpy to allow power locks and windows, or a rearview camera (which you really, really need because the windows are so small and the wide body leaves you with a perilous blind spot on the rear right-hand side), or a killer sound system!

Hey, you still need music when you're making your way through the mud, right.....

Speaking of mud, I don't think I'll ever be taking this car off-road, but I can see it's well equipped, no, ideal, for off-roading.  From the 4.0-liter V6 to the rear-wheel drive to 4WD capability to the dashboard compass to the dashboard tilt-meter to the 60/40 rear seat split to the roof rack to the rear tow hitch, the FJ Cruiser looks ready to rough it in the snow, surf, sand, mud, dirt, whatever.

The heavy duty vinyl mats and floor surfaces are definitely kid-friendly, and I really wish Toyota had this option for other vehicles like the Prius or Sienna.  Yogurt spills, juice spills, mud stains and grass clippings (i.e. the occupational hazards of letting kids into your vehicle) would be NO PROBLEM whatsoever.

I've got the FJ Cruiser for another few days, so stay tuned for more posts about how it drives, how it feels in the back seat and what it's like in the cargo area!

Disclosure: I was selected for participation in the TWIN community through a program with Clever Girls Collective. I did not receive any compensation for writing this post, or payment in exchange for participating. The opinions expressed herein are mine, and do not reflect the views of Toyota.

Pink Pumpkins for Breast Cancer

Every October I decorate my home with pumpkins to celebrate Halloween, and every October I feature pink products on my blogs in commemoration of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month -- so why not combine the two?  Did you know that there's such a thing as a pink pumpkin? Yup, and it's making its debut just in time!

The Pink Pumpkin Patch is promoting a natural pink-skinned pumpkin, which is debuting all across the country this October just in time for National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

These pink pumpkins are part of the Pink Pumpkin Patch Foundation’s national campaign, “Pink Pumpkins on Your Porch – Let’s Unite Against Breast Cancer.” The campaign is designed to encourage everyone to join the fight against breast cancer by placing pink pumpkins on their porches and in their homes as part of their annual Halloween and fall décor.

In support of “Pink Pumpkins on Your Porch,” the Pink Pumpkin Patch Foundation has partnered with pumpkin farm owners and growers across the country who have agreed to $.25 per pumpkin to the Pink Pumpkin Patch Foundation. Funds will then be donated to breast cancer research organizations.

Hershey's Halloween Candy Giveaway

Hooray, my favorite month of the year has arrived!  What's not to love about Halloween?  You get to dress up in costume, you get to decorate your house with all kinds of fun stuff, and you get to trick-or-treat for lots and lots of candy!  Of course there's a definitely candy hierarchy, with boiled sweets going to the bottom of the list (and the trick-or-treat bag), and chocolate being the clear favorite.  Every October I shamelessly abuse my power as a parent and throw on all the parent guilt (I carried you for 9 months! Labored for 48 hours! I have stretch marks because of you!)  to get them to hand over my favorite Halloween candy:  Reese's Peanut Butter Cups.  Alfie, on the other hand, loves Kit Kat bars.   What's your favorite Hershey's Halloween candy?  Share your answer, and you could win some candy of your own!

To celebrate the arrival of Halloween, Hershey's invited us to participate in a fun Hershey's chocolate review!  We received a bag of Reese's Pieces in a fun fall-themed package:

With their orange, brown and yellow colors, Reese's Pieces are always perfect for fall -- put them in a clear glass jar to add some fall color to your tabletop, or use them to decorate your fall goodies (eyes for owls, buttons for witch cookie outfits, roof shingles for a haunted gingerbread house, etc...).  I decided to bake them into my latest batch of brownies:

They looked wonderful, and they tasted amazing!  The Reese's Pieces lent just the right amount of peanut-butter taste to complement the fudgy chocolate of the brownies.  I might have to bake another batch -- but the kids keep sneaking Reese's Pieces when they think I'm not looking :)  I guess I'll just have to go to the store and get another bag!

The second variety of candy we got to review is the new Cadbury's Screme Egg:

They're just like the Cadbury Creme Eggs you get at Eastertime, but of course they gave it a Halloween twist -- instead of the yellow-and-white creme centers (that look like the yolk of an egg), the inside of a Screme Egg is white and lime green!  Too cute!  We were fighting among ourselves to polish off these eggs, and The Pea's friends were scheduling playdates at our house so they could try an egg as well :)  I've been somewhat doubtful about the quality of Cadbury chocolates in the US, but I have to say, the chocolate in these Screme Eggs taste JUST like the Cadbury's chocolate in England, which is to say, THE BEST.  Even Alfie, who grew up in England, can't tell the difference (and we usually can).  We'll definitely be buying more of these!

That's only a tiny sampling of all the sweet surprises Hershey's has for Halloween!  For Halloween, they also have Halloween Kisses (wrapped in black and orange foil), Pumpkin Spice Kisses, Reese's Peanut Butter Pumpkins, special trick-or-treat-sized bags of Hershey's candy and more.  Check out all of Hershey's seasonal candy products, along with Halloween-themed recipes, crafts, costume ideas, coloring pages, pumpkin stencils, and other Halloween goodies at Hershey's Boo Blvd!

Wearables Review and Giveaway

Much as I love Halloween and dressing up for Trick-or-Treat, every year I dread the thought of shelling out big bucks for a Halloween costume.  I used wait till November to buy Halloween costumes on sale and convince them to wear it next year, but now that they're older, they have definite opinions about what they want to be -- and they don't make up their minds until October!  We've had some success at homemade costumes, but I don't have the patience and the time to turn that big cardboard box into a mailbox/R2D2/robot/iPhone.

Fortunately, there's a new alternative -- Wearables, a do-it-yourself costume that is part costume, part craft and all fun.   There are 3 models -- Stunt Plane, Princess Carriage and Dozer -- that kids can color and decorate, assemble with mom and dad's help, and wear as a 3-D costume!  Wearables are made of sturdy cardboard, and they're pre-cut, so they assemble easily and look great.   They cost under $30, so they're budget friendly, and kids of all ages love them -- including my own boys! Wearables sent us the Stunt Plane to review, and here's why they loved it so much:

1) Kids can  turn the plane into an art project, and decorate it way they want. I love toys that get kids' creative juices flowing!  3Po and Jammy decided to make a rainbow-colored plane.  They started out with markers but ran out of ink (it's a big plane!), so they finished it off with watercolor paints.  It was a task that fully absorbed them over 2 sessions,  for several hours each, and they enjoyed every minute of it!  Wearables also makes a Princess Carriage for girls, and I can totally imagine little girls decorating it with glitter glue and stickers.   Even better, this is one art and craft project that won't sit on a shelf after it's finished......

2)  Kids can wear the plane as a Halloween or dress-up costume.  My boys felt like they were a bit too old to wear the plane as a costume and zoom around the garden pretending to fly the plane -- they are 8, after all!   But this kind of imaginative play would be PERFECT for kids age 3-5, and if 3Po and Jammy had been preschoolers, I know they would be have been so excited to "fly" this plane for Halloween.

3) Kids can use the plane as a prop in their pretend play.  This was the BIG surprise.  The boys may not want to wear the plane for Halloween, but they quickly discovered another use for it -- as a plane for their stuffies!   3Po and Jammy still love playing with stuffed animals.  They pretend their teddy bears, cows, turtles, sharks, and other stuffed animals are ninjas or knights or superheroes the same way other boys play with Lego minifigures or Playmobil figures.  And this plane was the perfect size to transport their stuffies!  They even named the plane Sniffles' and Snuffles' Spitfire, after their twin teddy bears :)

Check out how much fun they are having with the Wearables plane!

One thing to note:  assembly should definitely by performed or supervised (in the case of older kids) by an adult.  Even 3Po and Jammy, at age 8, asked me to help them go over the instructions and make sure they understood it correctly.  More importantly, even though it's made of sturdy cardboard, it's still cardboard, and the tabs might rip if you were to force them (as any overenthusiastic kid would do), rather than gently guide/wiggle them into their proper slots.  The 2 wing pieces received quite a few knocks and bends since they are long and thin.  But honestly, even if some parts do tear, it's nothing that masking tape or duct tape can't fix.

Here's some information about Wearables:

It’s a whole new way to create a one-of-a-kind 3-dimensional costume. Wearables™ by Kid Constructions™ feature multiple die-cut corrugated pieces that children use to create, construct and wear their own creations. All the elements combine for a creative crafting experience that gives kids a chance to put their own unique stamp on Halloween.

Buckled up in the Bulldozer with its front-loading plow, a child becomes a construction vehicle operator. Strapped into the Princess Carriage with its treasure chest and pony, a child transforms into a dazzling princess. With each Wearable children can take on a different imaginary role.

Priced at under $30, Wearables are the perfect solution for a budget friendly Halloween costume.

Wearables are available at Toys R Us, Toysrus.com, and Amazon.com.

CLIF Kid Full Moon Brownie ZBars are back!

October is here, and of course you know what that means!  Yes, yes, of course, I know Halloween is here, but I'm referring to CLIF Kid ZBar's Halloween flavor, Full Moon Brownie.  When it came out last year,  I fell in love with the brownie-like look and taste.  I'm so happy that it's back for the season!  I need to stock up on Full Moon Brownie so I can hand it out to the kids on my sons' soccer team and the kids on my daughter's volleyball team.  They're made with whole grain and are free from hydrogenated oils, high fructose corn syrup and trans fats (let's leave the scariness to the costumes, not the candy!).  They're the perfect healthy treats for October!

His-and-hers Halloween costumes

October is almost here, and you know what that means:  us grownups have an excuse to dress up in costume, all month long!  I'm not just talking about Halloween night, I'm talking about all those Halloween parties.  And if you are taking a date with you to your party, it's a lot of fun if you have coordinating costumes.  I'm not into the gag-type costumes like ketchup and mustard, or tacky tourists, I prefer adult costumes with a hint of naughtiness.  Here are some of the matching costumes for women and men at EdenFantasys:

Both of you can dress up as police offers -- but who will be the good cop and who will be the bad cop?  And who is in charge of the handcuffs?

Male policeman costume:

Here's a female fire fighter costume. What can I say, it's hot hot hot... :)

And here's the matching male firefighter costume:

Another fun holiday to celebrate in October is Oktoberfest. What's not to love -- sausages, beer, music, and late night partying with family and friends!  Some friends of mine recently attended an Oktoberfest gathering, and they had to search long and hard on Ebay for their costumes.  Had they told me, I could have pointed them to this adorable beer garden girl costume:

And here's the matching lederhosen for guys!
