Staying Well with Walgreens this Winter

We've just come back from a 3-day ski trip at Tahoe, and it's amazing how much stuff you need to pack just for 3 days. Part of it, of course is all the extra gear and paraphernalia you need when you go out in the snow, and another part of it is traveling with a fussy Englishman who refuses to give up his endless daily cups of tea. But there's the stuff you can't really avoid, like clothes and shoes and toiletries and medicines -- and given the wintry season, we need more of those than ever to stay happy and healthy!

I was recently chosen by Walgreen's and BlogHer to review the Walgreens' Brand Health and Wellness products of my choice, and the invitation could not have come at a better time, since I was stocking up for our trip, and we buy Walgreens' brand products all the time anyway.

Click here to read about some of the Walgreens' Brand Health and Wellness products that we rely on for our winter getaways -- and enter to win a $100 Walgreens gift card!

Family Travel Deals

Our family does a lot of traveling. With both Alfie's and my parents living on opposite sides of the world, we have to take 10 and 14-hour plane rides just to visit! We usually alternate visits so that the kids can see their grandparents; one year we all go to the Philippines for Christmas, and the next year we all go to the UK for the summer. While we're there, we try to set up some side trips so that we get to see other places and experience new things.

Obviously, all of this doesn't come cheap for a family of five. Plane tickets alone, to such far-away destinations, can cost over $7000 in the high season! So we really have to watch our money and look for the best bargains we can for any of our side trips while we're in the Philippines or in the UK, or when we want to indulge in a short weekend getaway or other (comparatively minor) vacation. Here are some things we do to find family travel deals.

1) Plan, plan, plan
Knowledge is power! The more you know about a place, the more likely it will be that you can find inexpensive places to stay and inexpensive things to do. Search the web for articles on family travel to your destination -- they almost always include information on free or cheap things to do, like parks, museums, free festivals and the like.

2) Search for deals
Websites like Kayak.com, Expedia.com and Travelocity.com are always our first destination whenever we are thinking about taking a vacation that involves plane tickets. They are a great way to compare airline ticket prices to get the best deals. We are lucky that there are 3 major airports in the San Francisco Bay Area, which gives us the option to depart from the airport that shows the lowest fares.

3) Travel in the off-season or non-peak days
I know this isn't always possible (i.e. if you want to see your relatives during the holiday season, you have to travel during the holiday season), but if your schedule is at all flexible, plan to fly in the off-season. If your kids are still in the preschool stage, take your vacations when all the big kids are in school (i.e. September, October, November)! If you have school-aged kids, consider taking them out of school -- bear in mind that travel can be a really educational experience. (when we do take the kids out of school, I always give them workbooks to complete while we're traveling, and have them do a journal so they can do a presentation to their class when they get back). Again, sites like Expedia, Kayak, Travelocity as well as most major airline sites have features that let you compare fares to see which dates and periods the fares are lower.

4) Stay in lower-budget hotels
Don't be afraid of one or two star hotels. They're not all roach-infested dives -- some of them, especially in Europe, are clean, comfortable, small, family-owned establishments! Oftentimes the reason they are classified as one or two star accommodations is that they don't have the facilities of more luxurious hotels -- for example, many places in Amsterdam do not have elevators. Pay attention to reviews by travelers who have stayed in the place, rather than how many stars a hotel has.

5) BYOB -- Bring your own Breakfast
If we can, we take our own boxes of cereal with us so we can forego expensive hotel breakfasts. Of course, it may not be convenient (i.e. we usually only do it if we're driving to our destination and we know the hotel room has a fridge); in that case, we find a local diner or a supermarket where we can buy our own food.

6) Swap homes
Accommodations are one of the biggest cost items on any family travel budget, so consider signing up for a home or vacation swap. Basically, you find a family in the place you want to visit, who wants to visit the place were you live, and you live in each other's homes while you're on vacation. We've never done this, but I've heard that many families find it to be a rewarding experience and a great way to save money. Make sure you do your research beforehand!

7) Drive
For our family of five, the cost of five plane tickets plus the cost of renting a car at our destination can be prohibitive, so if the destination is within an 8 hour drive, we would rather take our car. Sure, it takes a while, but think about how much time it takes to get to an airport -- 2 hours before the flight -- then pick up your luggage and get from the airport to your destination.

8) Check out packaged tours
Sometimes packaged tours can cost less that pieceing together individual components of a vacation yourself.

9) Check out last-minute bargains
Airlines and hotels and cruise ships often have seats/rooms/cabins left unsold, so they offer deep last-minute discounts. If you don't mind the last-minute rush and aren't wedded to traveling to a particular place at a particular time, you could really snag some great bargains.

10) Set expectations
Finally -- and perhaps the most important -- set a budget that you can live with and work within that budget. Prioritize what you want out of the vacation (i.e. do we want to go to Hawaii to surf, or to lay on the beach, or trek into a volcano?) and be prepared to compromise (we can't do all 3, so let's forget the surfing and book a hotel across the street from the beach instead of a beachfront hotel -- we can still lay on the beach -- and use the savings to book a volcano trekking tour).

Good luck, and Bon Voyage!

What's New on Jumpstart: Review and Giveaway

My kids' love affair with Jumpstart, Knowledge Adventure's 3-D virtual world for kids, has been going for almost 2 years, ever since I was first invited to review the site. They really love "jumping" into their virtual selves and going off on adventures all around the Jumpstart world! There are tons of fun and educational activities that kids can enjoy; when playing games on the site, kids can even earn "coins" that they can "spend" on outfits, accessories, vehicles and even pets for their Jumpeez, or virtual selves.

But last August, school got in the way, and my boys were too busy adjusting to first grade to spare much time for online games. Before we knew it, a couple of months had gone by without visiting JumpStart, so when they returned it was like a whole new world! Jumpstart always has fun seasonal tweaks -- like falling snowflakes in the winter, hearts during Valentine's, and now shamrocks for St. Paddy's Day -- but there are so many exciting new things going, which is why they will probably be playing on Jumpstart for years to come :) Here are some of them:

New Rides

There are so many new ways to get around in the JumpStart world now, and I'm not just talking magic carpets. My sons are drooling over all the cool vehicles in the Ridez Shop, including Flying Saucers shaped like hamburgers, pink llamas, winter sleighs, and the latest Pot of Gold cruiser. And they're definitely enjoying the sweetest ride of all -- taking their Jumpeez on the new virtual Roller Coaster ride!

New Petz
Who can resist a pet that follows you everywhere, even in a virtual world? Get your kids to check out the latest pet friends at the Petz Shop. They can use their JumpStart coins to buy cool new pets like Oliver the Icy Owl. And don't forget all those cool dragon eggs that you can "incubate" and "hatch" into cute baby dragons! I think the dragon eggs and dragons must be my kids' favorite part of JumpStart world right now.

New Games

Knowledge Adventure is just as well known for their Math Blaster series of educational children’s games as they are for the JumpStart Learning System, so it was only a matter of time before the two worlds collided, and I'm so glad they did! MathBlaster.com is a new online adventure where kids can play arcade-style math games and complete missions with fun aliens and high-tech gadgets. Kids can easily switch from one world to another using the space portal in JumpStart's DownTown.

New Lands

Jumpstart is adding new lands to their virtual world all the time, and one of the brightest and best additions so far is Windy Hollows, a magical land where kids can let their inner wizards out. Kids can hunt around the area for secret ingredients they can use to brew up a potion and turn their Jumpee friends into fun things like Hocus-Croakus Frogs! My sons love this new area because they get to test-drive magic broomsticks and fly down Main Street!

Can a middle-aged couple learn to ski? You betcha!

Thank you to P&G’s Have You Tried This Yet? program and Kroger for sponsoring my writing about trying new things and breaking out of my everyday routine. Click here to find great savings on high-performing P&G products at a Kroger store near you. I was selected for this sponsorship by the Clever Girls Collective, which endorses Blog With Integrity, as I do.

Practically everyone we know skis or snowboards. It seems to be something that people who live around here do. Lake Tahoe and all the amazing ski resorts are just 4 hours' drive away. Our school district even has 3 or 4 days set aside for a "winter break" so that families can go on their ski trips. Like many families here, we also love to drive up to Tahoe for a short winter getaway, but the only winter activities we would engage in would be sledding, snowball throwing and snowman building.

Until now.

For the past 2 years or so, we've taken the kids to Soda Springs, a small ski resort with a kids' snowplay area. For 25 bucks kids can enjoy sledding, little snow carousels (with snow saucers that go round and round), and skiing or snowboarding on a small slope with a magic carpet. The kids have loved it, but this winter they outgrew the little bunny slope.

You see our dilemma. Sure, we could sign them up for lessons -- but what happens after that? Do we just send them off into and let them hop on the ski lifts on their own while we wait at the lodge? The only solution we were comfortable with was to take lessons right along with them.

By the way, when I said "comfortable", I mean "scared silly". I've always wanted to be a skier; unfortunately, my deep-seated fear of speeding downhill makes that kind of difficult. The last time I skied was 15 years ago, and I can count the number of times I've been skiing with one hand. The most I ever did was an easy blue run (I buried the memory because it was so traumatic), and it's not like I'm in the best shape of my life! Alfie, as I mentioned, has never strapped a pair of skis on in his life, and fifty-something is not exactly and ideal age to start skiing. The ground, even though it's nice and powdery, seems so far away when you're a grownup, and your bones seem so fragile.

But we decided it was time to try. I tell you, this is proof that a parent's love can move mountains -- or in our case, ski down mountains with our hearts in our throats.

I'm not sure what I expected. I knew we wouldn't learn as quickly as the kids, but I was hoping we'd pick up enough to maybe survive an easy green run with them. I wasn't expecting to go down the slopes without falling every few feet, I was just hoping I wouldn't twist, pull or break anything. One thing at a time. There's always next year, right?

To my utter surprise and delight, I picked it up fairly quickly. I actually remembered what I had learned so long ago, and after a tense first 10 minutes, I was able to go down a green slope with little difficulty or fear. I even did a blue run! I'm still quite nervous, but I'm even more nervous about my kids going down these runs without us, so . And I have to say, it's so much fun with the kids there.

Even more amazingly, Alfie picked it up just as quickly as I did -- this, from a middle-aged man who has never skied in his life! And he loved it! He told me he could never understand why skiers go out and ski the whole day (how boring is that??), but after we skied for 2 hours the first day, then 4 hours the next day, and given sufficient tea-and-chocolate breaks he admits he could totally be out on the slopes the whole day. He admits he was pretty nervous, but like me, after the first 10 minutes he was pizza and french-frying down the hill with The Pea, 3Po, Jammy and me. He's already starting to do parallel turns! Unlike me, he's a speed junkie, so I'm counting the ski trips until he surpasses me in speed and skill.

I'm so happy that Alfie and I were able to swallow our fears, went out of our comfort zone and tried something new. I'm not saying I'll be going down double-diamond runs anytime soon (I'm speaking for myself, of course; the boys had little difficulty snowboarding down the blue run, and The Pea is leaving us all in the dust), but we're already looking at other resorts where we can practice our newfound skills, try out some different green runs, maybe even tackle another blue. It's so great to have another activity that the whole family can enjoy together. Bring on the powder!

McDonald's Fruit & Maple Oatmeal Review and Giveaway

One of the highlights of my visit to the McDonald's headquarters in Illinois last year was getting to taste some of their menu items that had just been introduced or were in the works. McCafe frappuccinos? We tasted them first. Fruit Smoothies? They hadn't even been rolled out in stores yet when we tried them.

And then there was this product that was so new, they weren't even sure if it would even become a McDonald's product: Fruit & Maple Oatmeal. The participants at the McDonald's Family Getaway were given a bowl of the oatmeal to try and rate, just like a consumer focus panel would. I fell in love with the oatmeal and gave it a "10" on every measure. I started praying to the fast-food gods that the oatmeal would make it onto the McDonald's menu.

That was in June 2010. In August, I got the chance to try it again at BlogHer. When I found out they were serving it at the McDonald's booth at BlogHer 2010, I passed on the official BlogHer breakfast and headed to the McDonald's booth to enjoy that creamy, hot yumminess. It was so good, it made my "Best Of BlogHer 2010" list.

Later in the year (September? October?) I saw a sign for McDonald's Fruit & Maple Oatmeal up at a McDonald's in Santa Cruz -- but it hadn't been rolled out nationwide yet, that was just a regional test market to see if the oatmeal would make the cut in actual stores. Still, that was a positive sign.

Then in January of this year, the heavens opened up: I received word that McDonald's Fruit & Maple oatmeal was available in all McDonald's stores! All day! For just $1.99!

The Basics
Here's a snippet from McDonald's Jan. 3, 2011 press release:
OAK BROOK, IL--(Marketwire - January 3, 2011) - McDonald's kicks off the new year with the national introduction of its new Fruit & Maple Oatmeal available for customers at breakfast and throughout the entire day. Delivering two of the three recommended daily servings for whole grains and about a half cup of fruit, Fruit & Maple Oatmeal is McDonald's first new breakfast offering since 2008. Combining the perfect harmony of flavor, McDonald's Fruit & Maple Oatmeal is prepared with 100 percent natural whole grain oats, light cream and brown sugar, and topped with diced, fresh red and green apples, tangy dried cranberries and two types of raisins. As part of McDonald's ongoing commitment to customer choice, every bowl of Fruit & Maple Oatmeal is freshly prepared upon request: customers may order it with brown sugar or without brown sugar for those who prefer a less sweetened option. Beyond breakfast, Fruit & Maple Oatmeal is served any time of the day in all of McDonald's participating 14,000 restaurant locations in the United States.

The Bongga
When I first tasted McDonald's Fruit & Maple Oatmeal, I told the people at McDonald's that if it were available, it would make me visit McDonald's more -- and so far, I've kept my word. I've been buying a McDonald's Fruit & Maple Oatmeal about once a week since I found out it was available. I love it that much!

When it's made right, this oatmeal is warm and creamy. The toppings (a mixture of apples and raisins and cranberries) give some nice contrasting textures (crunchy and chewy), and there's enough brown sugar mixed in to last all the way to the bottom of the bowl. Since each bowl is prepared individually, you can order yours with or without brown sugar, and you can ask the server to go easy on the cream, or to serve the toppings on the side. It has good stuff like fiber and fruit. Yes, it's instant oatmeal (i.e. the server tears open a pack and adds hot water and milk) but it's really quite good -- the perfect fast-food breakfast or quick healthy snack.

How does it compare to other fast-food oatmeals? I've tried the Jamba Juice and Starbucks oatmeal, and I honestly have to say that I like the McDonald's version the best. The Jamba Juice version uses Irish-style steel-cut oats, which are somewhat grittier (I'm not a fan), and I find the toppings too sweet. The Starbucks version comes close, but it's not sweet enough (and it costs more). McDonald's has the Goldilocks of oatmeals for me: it's just right.

The Blah

It breaks my heart to admit this, but I have to be honest -- the quality of oatmeal I've been served has varied widely. At this point, I don't think the stores know how to make it properly. Sometimes the oatmeal is just the right consistency; other times they put too much milk and it is a watery mess. Sometimes the oatmeal is perfectly piping hot; other times it has been lukewarm at best. Unfortunately, I've had to be kind of a diva (a nice, polite diva, but a very particular diva just the same) in order to get the oatmeal looking and tasting just right -- and I hate having to do it, but I have to do it because I know how good it can taste.

I know the real product rarely looks like the product you see on the photos, but trust me, if it's done right, it comes pretty darn close. So my advice to you, dear reader, is Don't Settle. If it's lukewarm, take it back. If it's too watery, wait a minute or so for the oatmeal to absorb some of the liquid. Then, if it still looks too watery, take it back to your server and ask, very nicely, if you could have it made with a bit less liquid. Trust me. The taste will make it all worth your while.

The Bottom Line
Consistency is a key quality component of the McDonald's experience, so I have every confidence that McDonald's will get this right. I really love that McDonald's has put a tasty, healthy, nourishing option on their menu!

Mars Needs Moms Giveaway

Wow, Disney movies are coming thick and fast! I've barely had time to stop raving about Gnomeo & Juliet, and now Mars Needs Moms is blasting into theaters (in 3D, no less!) on March 11. Finally, there are beings that appreciate moms! Sad that we had to go to another planet to find them, but meh, that's life :) The movie features the voices of two of my favorite comic actors, Seth Green and Joan Cusack, and I can't wait to see it. I've been invited to an advanced screening this weekend, so watch out for a Mars Needs Moms movie review on March 11!

Here's the synopsis:
Take out the trash, eat your broccoli—who needs moms, anyway? Nine-year-old Milo (Seth Green) finds out just how much he needs his mom (Joan Cusack) when she’s nabbed by Martians who plan to steal her mom-ness for their own young. Produced by the team behind “Disney’s A Christmas Carol” and “The Polar Express,” “Mars Needs Moms” showcases Milo’s quest to save his mom—a wild adventure in Disney Digital 3D™ and IMAX® 3D that involves stowing away on a spaceship, navigating an elaborate, multi-level planet and taking on the alien nation and their leader (Mindy Sterling). With the help of a tech-savvy, underground earthman named Gribble (Dan Fogler) and a rebel Martian girl called Ki (Elisabeth Harnois), Milo just might find his way back to his mom—in more ways than one.

And here's the trailer:

Raisels Review and Giveaway

I like to give my kids little treats in their lunchboxes, but in the interests of good nutrition and dental health I only send candies on special occasions. For the most part I pack them fruit or yogurt or dried fruit or raisins to enjoy once they're done with their lunch. Team Mom recently invited me to try a great new product -- Raisels, "The Fruity Fruit Raisins" -- that is probably the first real fruit-based alternative to candy out there. Read more below to see why:

The Basics
Raisels are a new, healthier alternative to candy from the National Raisin Company. They are rich in antioxidants, fat free, cholesterol free and contain 100% of US RDA for vitamin C. Raisels contain zero sodium, high fructose corn syrup or artificial sweeteners. These fruity flavored golden raisings come in four flavors -- Sour Apple, Sour Orange, Sour Lemon and Sour Peach -- and are available in six-packs of 1.25-oz (25-g) boxes.

The Bongga
Raisels, where have you been all my life? I love these little treats! My kids love these treats! Here's why:

* Even before you remove the plastic wrapping from the six-pack you can smell a heavenly fruity scent.

* Some kids are grossed out by the dark color of raisins, but Raisels are made with golden raisins so they look really nice.

* They really do taste like candy!! My kids are crazy about any kind of sour candy, so Raisels are right up their alley. We all have a different favorite, but they all taste great. My favorite is the Sour Lemon, which tastes exactly like a sour lemon drop. And they have that great chewy texture, so it feels and tastes just like you're eating a sour gummy candy.

After devouring a box each, the kids made me swear I was going to buy more, which I am more than happy to do after all the unopened boxes of raisins that come back home. This is one healthy treat that's destined to become a regular staple in our pantry!

The Blah
Nutrition purists are bound to object to the added sugar in Raisels, but 90% of the sugar in Raisels is actually naturally occurring (remember, grapes do contain fructose, a naturally occurring sugar, which is what makes them sweet!). Here's a comparison of the amount of sugar in Raisels versus similar snacks:

Raisels: 23 g sugar per 35-g serving (.66 grams sugar per gram of product)
Raisins: 20 g sugar per 28-g serving (.71 grams sugar per gram of product)
Yogurt covered raisins: 18 g sugar per 28-g serving (.64 grams sugar per gram of product)
Sweetened dried cranberries: 29.4 g sugar per 42-g serving (0.7 grams sugar per gram of product)
100% all-natural fruit roll-up: 14 g sugar per 21-g serving (0.67 grams sugar per gram of product)

See, Raisels' sugar content is actually the lowest of all of these... and none of the others taste like lemon drops. Yes, Raisels does have a bit of added sugar, but so does most kids' yogurt, and so does chocolate milk. If packing Raisels in my kids lunch boxes gets them to gobble raisins like candy, I'm happy to add Raisels to my list of approved healthy treats (and I was kidding about the gobbling -- everything in moderation, kids, even Raisels and especially candy).

The Bottom Line
Raisels are a great healthy alternative to candies and soft drinks -- they're your kids' best bet when they need to get a sour candy fix!

Ralph Lauren Create-Your-Own Polo review and giveaway

Who doesn't love made-to-order clothing? Unfortunately, in this day and age, custom clothing can be prohibitively expensive -- but thanks to Ralph Lauren's Create Your Own collection, you can actually add a personal touch to some of Ralph Lauren's most classic, iconic clothing. As a Ralph Lauren Mombassador (thanks to Mom Central for selecting me!) I had the opportunity to create a unique children's polo shirt for The Pea. Keep reading to find out about my experience (and enter to win a Create Your Own shirt of your own!):

The Basics
The Create Your Own collection offers a wide variety of color combinations, different embroideries, and five unique monograms styles allowing you to customize your favorite Ralph Lauren piece.

The Bongga
Creating a personalized Ralph Lauren piece could not be easier! Just go to RalphLauren.com, click on Men, Women, Children or Baby, then select the Create Your Own category on the left. You'll be presented with an array of styles that you can personalize (depending on which department -- Men/Women/Children/Baby -- you selected), from hats to polo shirts to oxford shirts to dresses to baby onesies to bathrobes.

For our review product, The Pea selected a girl's polo shirt. She was asked to select from two options: our embroidered pony at the chest with matching vintage year at the hem or embroidered monogram at the chest with matching pony at the hem (note: other products have different personalization options; for example the Girls' Pink Pony Stretch Polo shirt lets you have a name embroidered at the back of the shirt).

Then she chose a shirt color, embroidery color and monogram font style. She chose her monogram letters, and that was it! Easy and fun. As The Pea made her selections, the image on the site changed to reflect her selections, so we were able to preview the shirt and see exactly what it would look like.

And here's what it looks like:
I am absolutely in love with The Pea's new Create Your Own shirt! It fits beautifully and makes The Pea look so long and lean. The embroidery on the chest and the hem provide just the right subtle touch. I know I'm biased, but I think The Pea looks even more beautiful than ever, just like an All-American Ralph Lauren model :)

The Blah
I usually whine about Ralph Lauren's high prices, but I think it's totally worth it to get a monogrammed Ralph Lauren shirt. The amazing thing is, the Create Your Own line doesn't cost much more than any of the other items for sale at Ralph Lauren! A regular girls' polo shirt is $35, and the Create Your Own polo shirt is just $39.50.

The Bottom Line
Ralph Lauren's Create Your Own line lets you add a personal touch to a Ralph Lauren classic item at an affordable price.

Speaking of giveaways, a PR agency recently sent me a link to AOL Travel's new weekly feature -- they will be aggregating all current sweepstakes that offer a trip as a grand prize. The site, called Win a Trip, will be refreshed every week. It's kinda like this Friday Finds, for travel giveaways :) (disclosure: I was not compensated in any form for mentioning this, I just think it's a cool site).

Tech-savvy parents, here's something to look forward to: Leapfrog will be selling a kid-friendly tablet starting summer of 2011! Finally, here's something that might actually make your child leave your iPad/Kindle/Nook alone. How cool is this? I haven't even seen this device yet, but already I'm loving the 5-inch color touchscreen, built-in camera/video and the backward compatibility with the entire Leapster Explorer library.

Here's the press release:

(NYSE:LF), today announced LeapPad Explorer™, a multifunctional learning tablet that ushers in the next generation of learning, digital reading and personal creativity for children ages four and up, available beginning summer 2011 in global English markets. LeapPad Explorer builds off the success of 2011’s Educational Toy of The Year Award winner, Leapster Explorer™, and is designed to change the way kids learn and play.

LeapPad Explorer is just like an adult tablet, but with endless fun experiences for kids, housed in a durable package. The new device combines the latest technology, educational curricula, and entertainment properties.

“LeapFrog created the first interactive learning experience with our original iconic LeapPad® Learning System in 1998. After 10 years of research into the most proficient ways for children to learn, we are doing it again with LeapPad Explorer,” said Craig Hendrickson, senior vice president and chief product officer for LeapFrog. “LeapPad Explorer is a multifunctional learning tablet that can ignite children’s imaginations and learning, but also handle a little rough and tumble play. This will be the must-have gift for all eager learners.”

MSRP is $99.99 (downloadable games will be priced at $7.99 and game cartridges at $24.99). I think it's time to put your kid's old Leapster 2 system up for sale on Craigslist or Ebay and start making room for this baby! Better start saving up .....

Spreading happiness

Valentine's Day has come and gone, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't keep spreading the love! One of my favorite chocolate companies, The Hershey Company, has just introduced little drops of happiness -- perfect for sharing -- Hershey’s Drops! They are a new bite-size way to enjoy and share the Hershey’s flavors you love. And to help spread the news (and happiness!) they have teamed up with Twitter Moms to ask bloggers like me how we share happiness with the people around.

Last December I participated in the Yahoo! Motherboard's Ripples of Kindness program, which encourages people to do random acts of kindness in the "pay-it-forward" spirit, and it was so amazing how people found ways to do good and spread happiness. It doesn't have to be a huge thing like donating a million dollars to a shelter, it can be something really small, like paying for someone's bridge toll or donating a warm coat to a shelter, or throwing a party at a homeless shelter, or even letting the car beside you on the highway go in front of you when you line up for your exit instead of angrily honking your horn and giving him the finger! We find ourselves so busy and wrapped up in our own lives, so we sometimes forget that making other people happy can make us happy too!

So, what are some of the ways you like to share a little happiness with people in your life? Here's how I do it:

1) Write little love notes and put them in my kids' lunch boxes.
2) Cut their sandwiches in heart shapes.
3) Text my husband with a little smiley face during the day.
4) Do something nice for someone in my family.
5) Make my husband a cup of tea.
6) Offer to babysit for a friend.
7) Give change to a homeless person.
8) Make dinner for a friend who just gave birth.
9) Turn off the computer and take an extra five minutes to read to my kids.
10) Organize a surprise birthday party (shhh, don't tell Alfie!)
11) Call my parents to say hi.
12) Email photos of the kids to my mother-in-law.
13) Tell a friend how great she looks.
14) Comment on someone's blog.
15) Retweet something you find particularly amusing or witty or profound.
16) Share a friend's blog post on Facebook.
17) Listen sympathetically to a friend's woes.
18) Pick up someone else's candy wrapper and throw it in the trash.
19) Plant a tree (hey, even mother nature needs some love!).
20) Put an extra squirt of hot fudge sauce on your child's ice cream sundae!

Here's to spreading love and happiness all around!

Disclosure: “I wrote this blog post while participating in the SocialMoms and Hershey's blogging program, for a gift card worth $25 and some product. For more information on how you can participate, click here.” . The views and opinions expressed here are my own.

The Complete Idiot's Guide to The Best Family Destinations

Alfie and I love traveling. Between the two of us we've probably visited over 200 cities in almost 50 countries, and that's still not enough. If we won the lotto, that's what we'd spend our money on (aside from a couple of motorcycles, tummy tucks and designer shoes, of course) -- travel, travel, travel. We've imbued our children with the same wanderlust; all three kids ask us constantly which new country or city we can visit next.

Traveling with kids always presents an extra challenge, because you obviously want everyone to have a good time. We don't want to spend all our vacations at theme parks, but the last thing we want is to drag tired, whining (or worse, video-game-playing) kids around to yet another museum. So travel these days requires a bit of extra planning. You'd think that all the travel information accessible via internet has made travel books obsolete, but we recently received a review copy of The Complete Idiot's Guide to The Best Family Destinations, and we're finding it to be quite a useful (and entertaining) tool in discovering great family destinations and attractions -- it's giving us some great ideas on where we can travel to next!

The Basics
Planning a family vacation is exciting, but finding a destination that will appeal to multiple ages and interests can be a challenge. While the internet has become a primary tool for vacation planning, helping families decide when to go, how much to spend, what to do once they arrive, etc., it falls short in organizing information in one place that helps families decide where to go in the first place.

In The Complete Idiot’s Guide® to the Best Family Destinations experienced travel writer Kyle McCarthy, with the assistance of traveler reviews from one of the top family travel sites, FamilyTravelForum.com, takes readers through five U.S. regions, Canada, and Mexico, uncovering the top 200 destinations for family travelers. Destination categories include:

· Top theme parks, family beaches, and other outdoor adventures
· The best road trips
· Most accessible national parks, eco-adventures, and recreation areas
· Rich cultural spots, including the best museum, event, or folk culture
· Can’t miss historical sites
· Budget-saving tips and fun facts to keep kids engaged

The Bongga
Here's what I like about the book:

* All the top family destinations are already compiled for you, so it's perfect for non-internet savvy families. But even people who spend their lives surfing the internet (uh, that would be me) can find this book useful -- try Googling "family travel" and sorting through the mountain of results, and you'll know what I mean! The true value of this book lies in the fact that it's a wonderful starting point for more in-depth research. You can quickly skim through the book to help you figure out where you want to go, then head to the internet to surf out all the deets. We're already using it to figure out what we want to do when we go to San Diego this August, and we're paying special attention to the attractions in Alaska, our next "dream vacation".

* Based on the recommended family destinations around my part of the world, I think the author is spot on. We've been to a few of the places in Part 6 (San Francisco, Las Vegas, Napa, Kauai, Hoover Dam, Lake Tahoe, Yosemite) and Kyle has really picked out the best of the best. I would heartily second her recommendations for things to do there.

* Best of all, it's in an easy-to-read format that the kids really enjoy. Call me old-fashioned, but I'd much rather give this to my kids to read than let them loose on the internet (can you imagine the results they would get for Las Vegas??). The Pea LOVES reading this book! She knows we probably won't get to see everything she reads about, but that's okay. It's giving her an idea of all there is to do and see around the US, Mexico and Canada, and it's feeding her love of travel even more. I have a feeling she's going to have some strong opinions when we start planning our next vacation -- and Alfie and I couldn't be happier.

The Blah
This may be nit-picky, but I don't like the title of the book. I think it's somewhat misleading -- it should read "The Best Family Destinations in North America", or something that reflects the fact that we're only talking about the US, Canada and Mexico. After all, there is literally a whole world of amazing family destinations around the world! Speaking of which, I'd love an international travel edition of this book.....

The Bottom Line
The Complete Idiot's Guide to The Best Family Destinations is a great resource book for families who are starting to plan their vacations, or just dreaming about one!

Make a Healthy Start in your Grocery Cart

Okay, Valentine's Day is over, so now that I've pigged out on chocolates and wine and fine restaurant food, I have no more excuse to fill my body with junk! Okay, that's not true: I actually didn't pig out on any of those foods (although I did indulge in some dark-chocolate covered strawberries, we had dinner at home last night and didn't consume any alcohol). But it is true that I'm determined not to fill my body with junk. I've made a commitment to healthier eating, remember? I'm taking the 29-Day Eat Right America Challenge and Whole Foods is helping me get started -- and they want to help *you* get started, too, with free 30-day access to nutritional tools and emails if you sign up by March 31, 2011 (see my previous post for details). It's all part of Whole Foods' Health Starts Here™ initiative, which offers products, education, practical tools and wellness resources to promote a healthy lifestyle.

Health Starts Here is all about four pillars of healthy eating:
1) Whole, unprocessed foods
2) A plant-strong diet
3) Healthy fats
4) Nutrient-dense foods

If you eat foods that meet those four standards, not only will sticking to the 29-Day Challenge be a breeze, you'll be well on your way towards a healthy lifestyle! But seriously, it's intimidating. Which foods meet those standards, and which don't? How in the world does one get started?

To get me started on the path to healthier eating, Whole Foods invited me to take a special grocery tour. The manager of my local Whole Foods store, Perry, took me around and showed me some of the ways that Whole Foods is helping customers learn more about healthy eating and make better food choices.

I never noticed it before, but Health Starts Here signage is all over Whole Foods! It's in the posters, on the signboards, on the shelf labels.

Foods that meet the Health Starts Here standards are clearly labeled throughout the store.

In case you're worried that eating the Health Starts Here way means slaving away for hours in the kitchen, Whole Foods has a section filled with prepared foods that meet Health Starts Here standards.

To help consumers choose the healthiest foods, select items around the store are scored according to the Aggregate Nutrient Density Index (ANDI) scoring system (see the ANDI scores printed on the signs, circled in green?).

Foods in the produce section have their ANDI scores printed on their signs, so customers get an idea of how much nutrition they are getting when they eat that food. The higher the ANDI score, the more nutrient dense (i.e. the more nutrients per calorie).

Here are more ANDI scores. Did you know that kale, watercress and collard greens have the highest ANDI score possible, 1000? They are nutrition powerhouses, and I'm going to have to learn how to make meals with them!

Other foods have information signs about the nutrients they contain and the health benefits you can enjoy when making these foods a part of your diet.

The tour was a great educational experience and I wish every shopper could get a private tour like mine! Even if you can't, bear in mind, that everyone at Whole Foods has been trained on the Health Starts Here principles, so they (or the store manager) can answer any questions you have about Health Starts Here, ANDI scores, and the like. And you can always start with the Pantry Basics List on the Health Starts Here section of the Whole Foods website.

Speaking of the Pantry Basics List, the final part of my Whole Foods tour was a tour of a shopping cart -- specifically, a the kind of shopping cart that's going to help me meet the 29-Day Eat Right America Challenge. Perry showed me the kinds of foods I should be putting in my grocery cart to make sure I'm following the Health Starts Here principles -- basically all the itmes on that Pantry Basics List, plus a ton of fruits and vegetables thrown in for good measure. Here's what was in the cart:

Fruits & Veggies: carrots, celery, kale, red bell pepper, romaine lettuce, baby spinach, blueberries, limes, tomato, broccoli, bananas (hidden behind the broccoli), lemons, avocado, apples, oranges, grapefruit)Fruits and Veggies

Legumes & Grains (clockwise, from top: pinto beans, black beans, white beans, steel cut oats, whole grain quinoa, whole grain long brown rice, green lentils)
Legumes and Grains

Nuts & Dried Fruit: (clockwise, from top: raisins, almonds, cashews, dates, walnuts, sunflower seeds)Fruits and Nuts

To my surprise and delight, I also found out that a healthy grocery cart can include canned and boxed grocery items! The last thing I want to do is shop for food every day, so it's nice to know I can stock up my pantry with staples like these:

Bottom row, L-R:
Whole wheat pita bread, organic whole wheat penne pasta, organic frozen berries, organic whole wheat spaghetti

Middle row, L-R:
Organic diced tomatoes, garbanzo beans, black beans, kidney beans, pinto beans, organic tomato paste, organic dijon mustard, organic almond butter, organic sesame tahini paste

Top row, L-R:
Whole grain cereal flakes, organic flaxseed, organic apple cider vinegar, organic vegetable broth, amino liquid, organic soymilk, gluten-free tamari soy sauce, multigrain bread, organic almond milk

Doesn't all that food look amazing?? And it's not because of my genius for photography; it's just because everything is so fresh and wholesome. There are a ton of foods I have never ever cooked with before: kale, quinoa, tahini paste, and just having them in my kitchen makes me eager and excited to try cooking with them. I only hope the kids and Alfie enjoy the results! Will they? Won't they? Stay with me as I continue this series of healthy eating posts over on Finding Bonggamom -- I'll be cooking, eating and blogging my way through the 29-Day Eat Right America Challenge!

Disclosure: As a thank-you for posting about the Health Starts Here Program and Eat Right Challenge, Whole Foods has generously provided all the groceries you see in the photos above. No other form of compensation was given for this post. Any future posts about these programs are neither reqyested, compensated, or expected by Whole Foods. Program information is provided by Whole Foods and is clearly indicated in italics. The views and opinions expressed here are my own.
