Shabby Apple Review and Giveaway

Question: Why am I jumping around like a little girl in these photos?

The Bongga
Once again, Shabby Apple has hit the spot! This dress is absolutely perfect for the spring. I love the combination of mango and pomegranate colors (what a delicious way to describe them!), and the silky stretch top makes it so comfortable. Like all Shabby Apple dresses, it's ultra-feminine and sexy without being revealing, and it has that hint of irresistible vintage glamour.

With such va-va-voom style, you'd think you'd be paying hundreds of dollars, but other than their bridesmaid dress collection and a handful of silk dresses, most of Shabby Apple's dresses cost less than $100. Not only that, most of them can be washed in cold water (goodbye, high dry cleaning bills).


The Blah
Notes for this dress state that it is cut generously. I disagree; I think it fits true to size. Also, I'm not sure why the zipper at the back has to be silver. Couldn't they find one in the same pomegranate color as the top? Or is it part of the design? Finally, I'm not looking forward to ironing that skirt!


The Bottom Line

Be Yummie for Valentine's Day!

Happy Valentine's Day to all you lovers out there! I knew this Valentine's Day was shaping up to be a good one when I was invited to try out Yummie Tummie's Sexy Camie Tank and Pantie set. It was such a nice V-Day surprise, both for me and for Alfie!

I own several Yummie Tummie tops, and this camie has that same shaping, slimming, hold-me-in effect -- so it's great to wear underneath your little black dress to smooth out all the lumps and bumps. And should the dress happen to slip off sometime later, you don't have to go through any of the "What if I look fat / Gotta suck my tummy in / Is this too skanky?" agony. If you're self-conscious or shy, this is the set for you. It's sexy and romantic without being too revealing; in fact it's modest enough that I think posting the photos below won't strip my blog of its family-friendly rating!



It may be shapewear, but this certainly isn't your grandma's girdle! There's lace at the top and bottom of the camisole, and all over the matching pantie, so when you wear the set together, it almost looks like a one-piece teddie. The deep red color is beautiful, and wearing it makes me want to sing that song from West Side Story: I Feel Pretty! And I love how it makes my So-Not-A-Supermodel-Body look halfway decent:



I think I would have preferred the pantie to be cut a little bit lower in the hips -- but then it would lose its tummy-tucking powers, so that's a tradeoff that has to be made. Ralph Lauren Adelle pants

Now that I've got an actual job, I need to get started on updating my work wardrobe. Fortunately, I work from home, so I can still spend most days in tees, jeans and sweats, but I do attend a fair amount of events these days (plus my employer's office happens to be about 40 miles from where I live, so I guess I'll have to put in an appearance one of these days), so I do need some clothing that makes me look like a professional who knows what she's doing. And no, those wide-hipped, tight-cuffed black trouser pants I wore 15 years ago don't count.

Fortunately I happen to be a Ralph Lauren Mombassador (thanks Mom Central for selecting me!), so they got me started on the road to my 21st century working mom wardrobe by sending me a pair of Ralph Lauren Adelle pants to review.


The Basics
Here's a description of the Adelle pant:

The Bongga
This is everything I want in a tailored pant. First off, they feel so comfortable, with that hint of stretch, that I could almost be wearing my ratty old sweats. Second, I don't need to iron them. Third, I think $99.50 is a great price, certainly comparable with other upscale RTW brands, and amazing for Ralph Lauren. Best of all? They're machine washable! I can just wash them on cold and not have to spend a fortune on dry cleaning. No, actually, best of all is how they look:
I don't usually wear my shirts tucked into my pants, but somehow these pants give me the confidence tuck it in and show it off.....


Perfect for date night!

The Blah
Even though I think they look great, the fit is slightly off for me. I have big, ummm, curvy legs and hips, so a size 12 fits those bits of me just right -- but the waistline is slightly loose. Perhaps a different style would have suited me better? Or even better, perhaps I needed the next size down? The fit does seem much looser on me than on the model....


The Bottom Line
You can't go wrong with Ralph Lauren pants; the exquisite tailoring and high quality material turns everyday women into icons of classic style.

Yummie Tummie at BlogHer 2010

How time flies! I can't believe it has been a year since I became a Yummie Tummie Brand Ambassador. This time, last year, at BlogHer 2009, I was in the Clever Girls' hotel room for some reason or another, and Stefania from CityMama handed me a white Yummie Tummie Skinny Tank and said something like, "Try this, you'll love it!". I slipped it on and fell in love. One year and three Yummie Tummie tops later, I'm still a loyal fan of their sexy, slimming styles, spreading the Yummie Message to muffin-top-sufferers everywhere.

This year at BlogHer, Yummie Tummie had a big presence at the Social Luxe Lounge party on Thursday night. I got to meet Yummie founder Heather Thomas, who turned out to be bubbly and friendly and full of great advice on what to wear. She gave me a sneak peek at some of Yummie Tummie's latest styles, like their Shaping Yoga Pant, Gwen Racer Back tank, Short Sleeved Crew t-shirt and Chelsea Classic Button Down shirt. I've been coveting the Gwen tank ever since I saw it online, and it looks even nicer in the flesh, and Heather surprised me by telling me Yummie Tummie would be sending it to me to review!

Speaking of reviews, unfortunately the Yummie Chiffon Tier top that I was supposed to wear to BlogHer did not arrive in time, but I wore my Yummie Ruffle top on Day 1 of the conference, so my fashion moxie did not suffer one bit.

Here I am with uber-celebrity Mrs. Potato Head. She confessed to me that she's been a naughty little couch potato, not getting too much exercise, and she's been feeling a bit lumpy and bumpy. I sang the praises of Yummie Tummie to her, and she loved the way my Yummie Tummie ruffle top kept my wobbly bits in (little British expression there, that's what comes from 4 weeks in the UK) without looking like a frumpy, um, potato sack. I wonder if they make Yummie Tummies in Potato Head sizes?

Yummie Tummie Ruffle Top

Have you seen Yummie Tummie's 2010 Spring Collection yet? My two favorite items are the Ruffle Top and the Cowlneck Tank . Unfortunately the Cowlneck Tank is all sold out but the Yummie Tummie folks must have read about how I'm slobbering all over the Ruffle Top, because they sent me one to review!


Here's my attempt to recreate the photo of the Yummie Tummie model:


Not bad considering the location was my bedroom, not some hi-tech studio, and my six-year old son was the photographer, using a point-and-shoot camera that's older than he is.



It's a really adorable top! The ruffle is flirty and fun, and makes me feel like I should be heading off to Vegas and partying at The Palms for Spring Break.

But, pssssst! I'll let you in on a little secret.

I'm not a college student anymore.

Which means I have a bit more flab and a bit less fab than when I was actually young enough to go on Spring Break. But never fear, this is a Yummie Tummie top, so it smooths out all the flabby bits without making you feel like you can't breath, or make you look like some burrito bursting at the seams because it's got a little too much filling. The material is more cotton-y, not shiny and Lycra-ish like underwear, so you can wear it on its own. Truth be told, I wouldn't have the guts to wear this top if it weren't a Yummie Tummie.

One thing to note: the ruffle badly needed ironing after I put it in the wash -- but the care instruction tag had a big NO IRON symbol on it. I ironed it anyway (just the ruffle, not the tank itself) on a cooler setting, using a cotton napkin to shield the fabric because I was terrified I'd scorch it and ruin my cute new top. It turned out fine.

One other tip I'd give is to order your Yummie Tummies true to size so you take full advantage of its Slimming Superpowers. Against my fellow Yummie Tummie Brand Ambassador Cat's advice, I ordered a size larger than I usually do (I haven't been exercising and I thought I had moved up a size), and as a result, the neckline is a bit looser and the material wrinkles a bit at the waist. My fault, not theirs.

So ladies, the moral of the story is, Trust in The Force their sizing chart. They're like the gods of shapewear; they really do know best. And despite my sizing error, I love this top -- I think it looks hot and I intend to shimmy in it all through the spring and summer!

Maybe I should book a room at The Palms after all.

Shabby Apple dresses are gorgeous! They have such an vintage vibe about them and a hint of old-fashioned glamour. Not that they're something a granny would wear -- these dresses are sexy and stylish. When I slipped on the navy Bon Voyage dress they sent me, I felt like, well, in the words of Shania Twain: "Man... I feel like a woman".



I don't know what it is; the dress is deceptively simple in cut and color, and my proportions are nothing like the ones of the model wearing the dress in the online photo, but I really feel like the dress made me look good. It would probably flatter almost any figure!



Speaking of flattering, I appreciate how they describe how their dresses fit (i.e. generous, snug, true-to-size) so you can make a more informed judgment about which size to get. They also have a great Fit to Flatter tool:



It gives you suggestions on which Shabby Apple dresses will flatter you most, based your body type. And if you do end up ordering the wrong size, just send it back and order another size: they offer free shipping on exchanges.

The Blah
Did I mention I DETEST ironing? I knew that the Bon Voyage dress had pleats all over the bottom, but I still couldn't resist choosing it, and I guess the price I have to pay for being able to waltz around in this dress is having to iron all those pleats. Sigh.

The Bottom Line
Shabby Apple dresses are stylish and chic and feminine to the core. Check out their latest fashions, you're sure to find a dress you love.

Jewelry by LuShae

Valentine's Day is getting closer, so it's that time of year when a woman's thoughts turn to.... jewelry. Yes, we love the dinners and the flowers and the candy and the cards, but there's nothing like the thrill of receiving a beautiful piece of jewelry to wear from the man you love. After all, the dinner and the candy end up on the hips, the flowers wilt and the cards get recycled -- but you can enjoy jewelry year after year! The people behind online jewelry retailer LuShae Jewelry recently invited me to choose an item from their collection to review -- what girl wouldn't say yes?! Here's what I thought of the pendant, and of their site:


The Basics
LuShae Jewelry specializes in authentic sterling silver jewelry with a wide range of precious and semi precious gemstones. They have a wide selection of earrings, pendants and rings in a variety of styles. Prices range from about $60 (sale prices) to $150.


The Bongga
There were several pieces that caught my eye, but I finally chose the Circle Journey Pendant to review, for a number of reasons:

* the five circles remind me of each of the five members of my family;
* it's a perfect match for my wedding and engagement rings, both of which are diamonds set in platinum bands;
* I had a feeling the long teardrop shape would look incredibly sexy dangling by the throat.

Online ordering was easy as pie, and to my delight, my pendant arrived less than a week after I ordered it! It arrived in a beautiful blue and white box that screamed -- no, whispered -- elegance. The pendant feels nice and solid, with a lovely silver shine that's not too bright, not too dull -- much, much more beautiful than I could have guessed from the online photo! Each of the five circles has a cubic zirconia set into it, which sparkles nicely against the sterling silver. Oh, and I was right; the pendant is the perfect way to draw attention to that feminine hollow between my collarbones. I'm so happy with this piece of jewelry and will be wearing it with pride for many, many years.


The Blah
The website does not match the quality of the jewelry, and its lack of polish and flair might turn some people off from ordering. It feels like it was designed and developed by amateurs: there's not much visual appeal, the photos don't do the real thing justice (at least that's what I thought in the case of my Circle Journey pendant, it was so much nicer than I was expecting!), there is no product search feature, and there isn't even a link to the home page! Also, I have to admit that I'm a bit confused about the branding: if the brand and site are called LuShae Designs, then why is the website URL www.jewelryart.designs.com, and why does is the "About" section headed "About Jewelry Art Designs"?

The Bottom Line
You can't tell from the website, but if the rest of the jewelry is anything like the Circle Journey pendant I received, LuShae Jewelry is definitely something any woman would want to receive for Valentine's Day, or any day.

Style Lab Jewelry Design for Nintendo DS

All 3 of my kids love making necklaces and bracelets. There's just something so calming and therapeutic about stringing beads and charms onto a string, and when you're done you end up with something pretty and unique and personal to wear. They started out when they were very young, sliding huge plastic beads onto pipe cleaners with their chubby 18-month old fingers, then graduated to plastic pony beads.

The beads have gotten smaller and smaller as they grow up (now they can work with seed beads, elastic cord, wire and crimping tools). And now they're delighted to find that one of their favorite craft activites has gone virtual with the introduction of Ubisoft's Style Lab Jewelry Design game for Nintendo DS! It was just released a couple of days ago and we were lucky to receive an advance copy to play with and review.


The Basics
Style Lab: Jewelry Design lets players create their very own pieces of jewelry, try the jewelry on photos of themselves, and upload the jewelry to the web, and order an actual copy of the jewelry for them to wear. Players can choose from game mode (where they pretend to be the owner of a jewelry shop; the goal of the game is to design the perfect piece of jewelry for the customers who come to their shop and earn money so they can buy more beads and charms to use in future jewelry creations), or they can enter a free play mode and design whatever jewelry they want.


The Bongga
The Pea, of course, loves this game; it's her third favorite Nintendo DS game (next to Imagine Salon Stylist and Style Lab Makeover). Even my two boys, 3Po and Jammy, love playing it! They like stringing real beads so it's not a surprise they like this as well. I'm impressed with how Ubisoft really got it right and created so many games that really appeals to girls' interests! It's so much fun to create jewelry, and so much easier to plan it out virtually than to struggle with the real needlenose pliers and crimp beads and such. And since you can actually order your finished creations, you get all the satisfaction of a finished product.

I really love how this game utilizes the best of the DSi's features. You can use the Nintendo DSi camera to take a photo of yourself, then "try on" the jewelry you made in the game. You can use the wireless feature to share designs with friends who also have the DSi and their own Style Lab: Makeover. Best of all, you can even upload your design to the web and order the actual bracelet that you design! Unfortunately we haven't gotten a chance to upload any of our creations to the Style Lab or order them, but you can bet this is one feature that we'll be trying in the future -- and when The Pea's jewelry creations arrive, you can bet I'll be posting photos on this blog!

The Blah
I have to admit I'm a bit daunted at the thought of getting everything set up to be able to order the kids' jewelry creations off the web. I took the first step -- creating an account at www.stylelabgame.com , but it seemed like just another online site for kids, and I couldn't figure out where I could actually order and pay for the jewelry. I wish Ubisoft would include clearer uploading and ordering instructions!

The Bottom Line
Style Lab: Jewelry Design is the perfect combination of virtual gaming and actual shopping. I would definitely recommend this game as a present for an 8-10 year old girl -- along with a gift certificate to the Style Lab shop, so the girl who receives this game can also get a real copy of the jewelry she designs!

Makeover fun with Nintendo DS games from Ubisoft

The Pea is at that age when makeup is just beginning to interest her. And I don't just mean trying it on -- she's been painting her nails and smearing on eyeshadow and lipstick since she was two. Recently she's asked me whether she can wear makeup to school and ballet class! Imagine what the teachers would say if a third grader came to class looking like Ivana Trump. It goes without saying that I nipped that idea in the bud.

Don't get me wrong, I'm totally fine with The Pea experimenting with hair and makeup. In fact, she's got her own little kit with lip gloss and nail polish and eyeshadow and a hairbrush and mirror. I just don't want her going out like that! Fortunately Ubisoft recently sent us two games that let The Pea indulge in her current makeover obsession on the Nintendo DS: Imagine: Salon Stylist and Style Lab: Makeover.

The Basics
Imagine: Salon Stylist is a Nintendo DS game that lets players run their own beauty salon. In the game's background story, you are a salon owner; the goal is to get clients to keep coming back and attract new, celebrity clients -- all of whom give you "money". You please clients by giving them the hairstyles and makeovers and treatments they want, greeting and treating them nicely. Successful makeovers earn you money that you can spend on salon decor and use to unlock new hairstyles and accessories that will make you even more successful.

Style Lab: Makeover lets players create avatars of themselves and their friends, and experiment with different makeup and hair styles. You use the Nintendo DS's camera to snap a photo of yourself so that you can match it as closely as possible to the available face shapes, skin tones, hairstyles, and facial features. You can complete makeover challenges to earn points that can be used to unlock more makeup colors, tools and styles. Unlike the Imagine series, Style Lab: Makeover does not have a story game component (there's another game for that: Imagine: Makeup Artist).

The Bongga
These two games are The Pea's current favorite! The story component of Imagine: Salon Stylist is secondary to the enjoyment she gets out of playing with the hair and makeup tools. She loves putting makeup on her virtual face and her friend's virtual face, and she loves experimenting with all the different hairstyles. And she loves styling The funny thing is that 3Po and Jammy also like playing with these games! I think they like using the stylus to do things like cut and straighten hair, or trace the outline of a virtual model's lip in order to apply lip liner.

The Blah
Both games are harmless fun, so I really don't see anything wrong with either of them. If I had a complaint, it would be that Style Lab: Makeover doesn't let girls take a photo of themselves and make over their actual face. They just use the photos to help create an avatar that resembles them.

The Bottom Line
Imagine: Salon Stylist and Style Lab: Makeover are two great games for young girls that let them indulge in all the hair and beauty makeovers they can think of. Parents will like it because there's no mess -- no need to buy gallons of makeup remover, and no need for that quick trip to the hairdressers to fix an unauthorized haircut that has gone tragically wrong!

Feeling Yummie at Type-A Mom (even though I'm not going)

This weekend, a bevy of mom bloggers are descending upon Asheville NC for the Type-A Mom Conference, and if it's going to be anything like last July's BlogHer conference, you can bet these women are gonna Bring It. And since the food and drink and merriment is probably going to be flowing, Bringing It is going to be a lot easier if you're wearing shapewear like Yummie Tummie.

Trust me on this one. I'm a Yummie Tummie Brand Ambassador and I was given one to wear at BlogHer. I loved how it squeezes me in without feeling like a corset, and I love how it's thin enough to slip on under a shirt. Now I'm just waiting for Yummie Tummie to start making the Long Skinny Tank in something other than black and white, like purple or brown or leopard print (can you say Mrrrrrrawwww?!).

I adore pearls. Most of my real jewelry has some kind of pearl on it; my most precious piece is a pearl necklace and earring set from Mikimoto, creators of the most beautiful cultured pearls in the world . Call me old-fashioned; I think a strand of pearls on a woman's neck just screams grace, beauty and classic elegance. Parting is Such Sweet Sorrow. No, it's Just Sorrow.

This weekend I test-drove a Lincoln MKT, courtesy of the Ford Motor Company. Before this, I thought Lincolns were for airport limos and Fords were for rental cars. But after 3 days with this baby, I can honestly say that it has changed my perception of those two brands.

This car is luxurious and elegant and sophisticated, something I never thought I'd say about Lincoln and Ford. The interior rivals that of any European luxury car. And the technology behind the car is impressive. The kids are crazy about the reverse camera and SYNC features. Alfie doesn't know how anyone could have survived before voice-recognition navigation systems. And once I stopped freaking out myself, I enjoyed freaking other people out when I used the Active Park Assist (Is that chick crazy, parking with no hands?! Keep her away from my car!). When they came to pick the car up, they almost had to pry the keys from my fingers. Dang, one could get used to driving this car.

To be perfectly honest, I don't like the exterior styling, especially those teeny-tiny rear windows and huge front grill. I've got small issues here and there. Most importantly, I can't vouch for how the quality and performance holds up over time -- I only have word-of-mouth and reputation to go on, which, at least in the places I've lived, is not stellar.

Yet.

If Ford keeps making cars like this, and if this car stays as great as it is five, ten years after today, they'll be changing a lot more minds everywhere.

Driving the Lincoln MKT, Day 3

Today was all about the Lincoln MKT's Active Park Assist. We actually circled the block around our house to find a spot where I could show Alfie the Active Park Assist and film it for this post. I'm not a control freak, but I still can't get used to giving up the steering wheel and watching as the car acts like Kit from Knight Rider. The spot we chose was pretty tight, but the Active Park Assist came to the rescue and we ended up perfectly parallel to the curb!

My last errand of the day in the MKT was a quick trip to Whole Foods for some milk. I found a spot just beside the store that gave me the perfect opportunity to enjoy the MKT's parallel parking skills once again. As I the MKT was in the process of parking, another car came driving up and began parallel parking on the opposite side of the street (it was a one-way street). I felt so weird just sitting there while the car parked itself that I actually pretended to grip the steering wheel -- I didn't want the other driver didn't freak out and think I was about to crash into his car!

Driving the Lincoln MKT, Day 2

We stayed home most of the day, but we turned an errand to pick up Alfie's shoes into a major family outing, just so we could get back into the Lincoln MKT. Usually even the slightest whiff of eau de errand is enough to send my kids into whining fits, but when I asked them if they wanted to ride in the new car, they quickly put down their drawing pens and scrambled to put their shoes on!

The Bongga
Alfie was impressed with the responsiveness of the car; he couldn't believe it when I told him the MKT has a 350 horsepower engine. And once again, the rear parking camera was a hit. We have front and rear sensors on our minivan to help with backing up and maneuvering, but this is the first time we've tried out the rear parking camera. Thank goodness for the rear camera, because with 2 carseats in the 3rd row, the rear window is almost completely blocked, and there is no way you'd be able to see a kid walking -- acting silly -- behind the MKT. Then again, if the camera weren't there, my kids wouldn't have been posing and acting silly in the first place!






The Blah
I never thought I'd say this, but there aren't enough cupholders in this car. Geez, I've got to get out of the suburbs. You know you've really gotten domesticated when you complain that two cupholders per row aren't enough! But seriously, other than for macho bragging, does anyone ever really need a 350 hp engine?

Two days down, two more to go, and I still haven't gotten to use the Active Park Assist!

Check Out Our Fantasy Fashions

We've really been enjoying the Klutz Paper Fashions Fantasy book that we reviewed last week! The kids -- yes, even 3Po and Jammy! -- have churned out fashion after fashion, tracing and cutting and gluing and decorating almost every day after school. The Pea is using the paper and embellishments not only for the paper dresses, but also for other crafts that she's making, like notecards and little books for her dolls. Not to be outdone, the boys have also joined in. I don't mind at all -- I think all that detailed tracing and cutting is great for developing their fine motor skills, their pencil grip and their scissor grip. And I love seeing them express their artistic side.

3Po made lots of mermaid outfits. For some reason, he really liked doing mermaids. I thought this one was cute because the top part looks like a bathing suit, even though there's no way a mermaid could put it on. Hey, it's supposed to be fantasy, so what do I know?


Jammy, on the other hand, liked fairies. Fairies with long gowns. This one looks like a 70's-era Woodstock fairy. I wonder what kinds of magic mushrooms this fairy was handing out!


When I saw this creation from The Pea, I complimented her on the use of the gauzy ribbon for sleeves. Her response: "Mama, those aren't sleeves! That ribbon is supposed to be a shawl". Forgive my fashion faux pax, Pea, that shawl is beautiful.

Driving the Lincoln MKT, Day 1

3Po and Jammy must have thought I was crazy when I led them to a strange, silver car after I picked them up from school.

3Po: Mama, that's not our car! (And all the while, his face was asking me: Are you stealing a car, mama? I thought it was bad to steal?).
Me: Yes, honeys, it is our car, at least for the next four days. We're test driving this car over Labor Day weekend!
Jammy: Ooooooohhhhhh......

I have to say that Ooooohhhhh.... is pretty much how I felt when they dropped off the Lincoln MKT in our driveway this morning. It's not every day that you get to try out a luxury car, and that new car smell is just intoxicating. I think we're going to have fun with this car over the next few days!

I'm still a bit too paranoid about the thought of crashing the car while I'm fiddling with all the gadgetry, so for now I'm just driving it around and getting a feel for it. And rather than do a huge novel-length review of the car at the end of the four days, I'd rather just list down the stuff that impressed or annoyed me about the car as I encounter them. For example:

The Bongga: Airconditioned seats......ahhhhhh! Pure bliss on a day when you've parked in direct sunlight and enter the car wearing short shorts! WHY more automakers don't do this is a total mystery. As for the boys, their Coolest Feature vote is a 3-way tie between the dual sunroof, reversing camera and pushbutton start. For now, anyway (we haven't gotten to the Active Park Assist yet!).

The Blah: No beeping sensors at the front of the car...... arrrrgh! The MKT is a big car with a humongo hood; if you've got sensors at the back, why not have them in the front?

Moxie Girlz

When I attended the BowlHer'09 party in Chicago last month, one of the hot items being passed out as swag was a new fashion doll called Moxie Girlz. I saw women walking out of the party with more than 1 big Moxie Girlz box, so it wasn't surprising that they had run out of Moxie Girlz by the time I got up to the swag table. I wasn't too disappointed, because I thought they looked a bit like Bratz dolls -- and I hate dislike Bratz dolls.

Bratz. Ugh. The name just rubs me raw -- brats are spoiled, selfish, kids. Bratz dolls are all about hair and fashion, which is fine, but their slutty clothing is not something I'd want my daughter wearing. And when I found out that Moxie Girlz is actually created by the company that originally created Bratz, I thought, there's no way I'm going to like these Moxie Girlz!

The Pea isn't interested in Bratz dolls either -- she says they look mean and unfriendly. So when I got back from BlogHer, I was really surprised to see her pick up the Moxie Girl contact card that I had picked up at the party and ask whether I would be reviewing the Moxie Girl doll. I said, probably not, because they looked like Bratz dolls to me. But she insisted it wasn't the same as a Bratz doll -- "Mama, she looks so pretty and nice! I don't like Bratz dolls either, but I like this one!" I was more intrigued at The Pea's attitude than anything else, so I emailed the name on the card and said I was interested in doing a Moxie Girlz review.

Welllll.....whadddayaknow -- Moxie Girlz aren't as bad as I thought! In fact, they're not bad at all! We received Sasha, and The Pea totally loves her. I'm totally reversing my initial snap judgement, and declaring for the record that the Moxie Girlz are welcome in our household. Here's why:


The Basics
Moxie Girlz is a new doll line that encourages girls ages 6-10 to be confident, creative and, as their motto goes, to "Be True! Be You! (TM)". The four core characters -- Lexa, Avery, Sasha and Sophina each have her own style and story. Each doll comes in a basic package, as well as in three themed packages:

Art-itude - the doll comes with markers and a bike that girls can decorate and personalize
Jammaz - the doll comes with music accessories so girls can pretend their doll is a rock star
Magic Hair - the doll comes with fun hair styling products that girls can use on their doll's hair and their own.

The Bongga
Wow. The Pea sure called it right. I have no idea how she made that judgement based on one small illustration, but I'm glad she did. Moxie Girlz are not Bratz. I'm relieved to see that they are much, much more appropriate for young girls! Their fashions are trendy, not skanky. They've got the big, doe-shaped eyes, but their expressions are dreamy, not sulky.

But what I really like is the message that Moxie Girlz sends to girls. Their tagline -- Be True! Be You! -- says it all, and it really resonates with my Girl-Power-conscious Pea. Yes, they're fashion dolls, but they are less about materialistic fashion and more about setting your own style. A Moxie Girl is more than just a pretty face!

The Blah
There isn't much The Pea doesn't like about this doll -- except her feet. Moxie Girlz have not feet; the shoes are the feet. They just snap onto the doll's legs at about mid-calf (our doll Sasha, came with boots). I guess it just takes some getting used to -- but since the doll came with an extra outfit, it would have been nice if an extra pair of shoes/feet/whatever were included.

The Bottom Line
Moxie Girlz dolls aren't just about primping and high fashion. I like the Moxie attitude!
