Sick Just Got Real

When you've got little ones running and screaming all over the house, sometimes it feels as if there's nothing more you want in the world than for them to stop.... until they get sick, and they actually do stop.  Sickness is probably the only thing that would get your perpetual bundles of motion to stop, and then you're so worried about them, you'll do anything to get them back to their normal, loud, crazy selves.

As part of their new Sick just got real.™ campaign, the pediatric brands of Pfizer Consumer Healthcare asked me to share some of my stories about parenting a sick child. Boy, do I have stories! With three kids, how could I not?  Kid delirious with fever? Check. Kid coughing up blood? Check. Kid vomiting into mom's hands? Check. Kid projectile vomiting like a demon from The Exorcist?  Check.

If you're a parent, I'm sure you've been there and you have similar (or worse) horror stories to share about taking care of a sick child. Instead, I'm going to share a story about a child taking care of a sick parent.

One of my sweetest memories of Jammy's babyhood is the time I came down with strep throat, along with 3Po and The Pea. Alfie was at work, and the three of us were burning up with fever. Jammy was the only one who was well enough to play. Actually, he was the only person who was well enough to get out of bed! He spent the day watching tv and playing quietly at my bedside. I felt terrible, both physically and emotionally; I was wracked with guilt that I couldn't take care of my kids.

At one point during the day, The Pea began crying weakly for something to eat. I could barely lift my head, let alone crawl downstairs to prepare anything.  Wouldn't you know it, Jammy took it upon himself to go downstairs and get some cereal for his big sister. He couldn't have been more than two or three years old, and there he was, taking care of us. He carried a box of cereal and a plastic bowl upstairs (he wasn't old enough to open the fridge and pour milk). My heart swelled up with love and pride for my little trooper. He was the best little nursemaid ever!
Is your child coming down with something? Is your heart breaking to see them suffer?  You are not alone! Visit the Sick just got real.™ website to check out virus outbreaks in your location, get tips for dealing with sickness, and learn which of Pfizer's products -- Infants’ and Children’s Advil®, Children’s Robitussin®, and Children’s Dimetapp®. -- can give your child some relief from their symptoms.

Having your child become sick is so difficult and it saddening to see them suffer. I like to give them chicken noodle soup and cuddle with them to help make them feel better.

My son and daughter got sick at the same time with high fevers and coughs and sore throats. It was hard taking care of them, but I make hot soup, gave them plenty of liquids and gave them Tylenol to keep the fever down. Cough syrup really helped with the cough! I made them feel comfortable and we read books and relaxed!

I HATE when the kids get sick. I do everything I can to prevent it...flu shots, vitamins, handwashing, antibacterial wipes, staying away from crowds.

It's no fun when the kids get sick. I try to make sure they get plenty of rest & drink as much fluids as they can.

well I took care of my niece every weekend for years, and often during the week. One time she was sick all weekend my tiny attic apartment throwing up, it was pretty hard for her - and for me!

The first time my son got real sick all he wanted to do was hold me, and all I kept thinking was that I was making him warmer with his temp

Its so hard to see our little ones sick. Our little one got a bad flu bug about a month ago, and did not get out of bed for two days. He was running a high temp...meds would help bring it down a bit. Doctor said to let him fight it unless he got any other symptoms. Was so hard to watch him not fell well.

My daughter was sick a lot between Jan and March this year. I just stocked up on tissues and gave her extra vitamin C, juice and soup.

I'm not a parent yet but I've taken care of a sick sister and sick nephew a few times. It always involved a lot of blankets, juice, and movies.

When my children are sick, we encourage lots of fluids and rest. I also make sure we have a great new movie to occupy rest time.

It was a hard winter this past year, as my kids were sick a lot. I try and make sure they wash their hands now everytime they come in from outside and from school. To destress, we love watching movies.

It is very hard to have a sick child. I sometimes don't know how to comfort my own children when they are sick but my husband is definitely a pro to handle business when our children get sick!
