It's easy to see why people are fascinated with twins, triplets and multiples: the idea of a sibling exactly your age, an actual genetic clone (for identicals, at least), a lookalike, a "built-in" playmate who shares your thoughts and feelings, is irresistible. Being a mom of identical twins, I'm a daily witness to the twin bond, and it really is quite special.
Only a twin can ever really know what it's like to be a twin, but there are quite a few movies featuring twins to give the general public a glimpse into what "Double Trouble" is like. Now that I have twins, I love watching movies with twins in them, and when I see them on the big screen, there's always something that reminds me of my own boys. Here are my three favorite "twin" movie characters:
Kyle and Nigel Baker, Cheaper By the Dozen: The 2003 remake of Cheaper By the Dozen doesn't have much in common with the 1950 movie or the original book, but I really love 2 characters in the 2003 version: twins Kyle and Nigel Baker. Every time I watch this movie, I think of 3Po and Jammy at 10 months old, crawling their way around our apartment and figuring out they could topple our floor lamp if they work together. Kyle and Nigel are the most mischievous little boys ever, and their antics are classic 3Po and Jammy at their worst!
Fred and George Weasley, Harry Potter movie series: When Kyle and Nigel Baker from Cheaper By the Dozen grow up, they are sure to be like Fred and George Weasley, the readheaded twin wizards in the Harry Potter series. They are always up all kinds of shenanigans, and they are so much alike that even their mother has trouble telling them apart. I frequently make the same mistake, calling 3Po Jammy and vice versa. In my defense, it happens more often when their hair is buzzed short, and when I can only see them from behind. And unlike a certain husband of mine, at least I didn't put them into the wrong cribs when they were babies, only to have them wail uncontrollably until The Pea informed him that he had gotten them mixed up. They didn't stop crying until they were back in their proper cribs!
Susan Evers and Sharon McKendrick, The Parent Trap: This was one of my favorite movies when I was growing up! The story is somewhat improbable -- identical twins Sharon and Susan are separated at birth, find each other at camp 12 years later and switch places in order to reconcile their divorced parents -- but I think 3Po and Jammy could totally pull it off. In fact, they already have. When they were a year old, we took them to a costume birthday party dressed as dragons. They toddled around the house for about an hour, then when it was time to sing Happy Birthday, we gathered them up and carried them into the living room -- and many of the adult guests cried out in surprise, because they had no idea there were 2 little dragons! They thought the same baby dragon had been wandering around!
Of course, Sharon and Susan were actually played by just one actor, Hayley Mills, unlike the Weasley twins (played by James and Oliver Phelps) and the Baker twins (played by Shayne and Brent Kinsman). Not that it mattered; they're still my favorite movie "twins". I also get a kick out of watching onscreen characters who are actually played by twins, like the kid in Adam Sandler's movie Big Daddy (played by Dylan and Cole Sprouse) or Michelle Tanner in Full House (played by the Olsen twins).
Speaking of Adam Sandler, he was in another twin movie recently, Jack and Jill. Adam plays a family man who dreads the annual Thanksgiving visit, by his wacky twin sister -- who is also played by Adam. The thought of Adam Sandler playing a loopy middle-aged woman is just too delicious for words! The Pea wanted so badly to watch this movie when it was in theatres, but we never got the chance. Adam Sandler movies tend to be heavy on the toilet jokes, sexual innuendo and romance, so I was surprised that she showed an interest in it -- but apparently it's really family friendly, and quite a few of her friends saw it and loved it. Fortunately the movie is coming out soon on Blu-ray(TM), Combo Pack & DVD, so she's finally going to get to see it. Jack and Jill will be available on Blu-ray(TM), Combo Pack & DVD on March 6th. You can purchase it on Amazon and other retailers.
