Take a stand against Type II Diabetes
So Halloween has come and gone, and we're left with four carved pumpkins, plastic skeletons and tombstones, and a houseful of candy. With all the sugar floating around, November -- and National Diabetes Awareness month -- could not come at a better time. Most people know that people with diabetes have high blood sugar, but it's important to be aware of what causes it, so we know how to treat, and in some cases, prevent it: * A person with Type 1 diabetes has high blood sugar because his body fails to produce insulin. * A person with Type 2 diabetes has high blood sugar because their body cells have become insulin resistant. * Pregnant women can sometimes develop gestational diabetes during pregnancy. Gestational diabetes usually resolves after the woman gives birth, but Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes are chronic conditions that cannot be cured. And while Type 1 diabetes is considered an autoimmune disease, Type 2 diabetes is actually preventable in most cases. Type 2 diabetes affects 25.8 million children and adults in the US, and it's on the rise, not coincidentally with the rise of obesity rates. It often affects obese individuals, but you don't have to be obese to be at risk for Type 2 diabetes. My grandmother has Type 2 diabetes. She has never been obese, but she has not been active in her old age, and at 92, it has caught up with her. It is not easy living with Type 2 diabetes: she has to constantly monitor her blood sugar and avoid her favorite chocolates and other high glycemic foods. As always, an ounce of prevention is worth a ton of cure, and living a healthy lifestyle can really help towards lowering your risk of getting Type II diabetes. That is why AllWhites and Better’n Eggs ®, two fat-free, cholesterol-free, and low calorie alternatives to shell eggs, has partnered with Oprah's trainer, Bob Greene for a Fit2Fight campaign designed to make people aware of the healthier choices they can make to their diet and exercise. Just a simple switch from regular eggs to AllWhites or Better'n Eggs will help lower your cholesterol and calorie intake, keep you feeling full longer, and provide lean, high-quality protein. They're made from real eggs, so you'll hardly notice the difference! Check out this yummy-looking turkey meatloaf made with Better'n Eggs:
