When Cheerios asked me what my ultimate family vacation would be, I felt a bit guilty about answering, because we've already been on so many wonderful vacations. So I shirked the question and passed it on to my kids instead. Here's what their ultimate family vacations would look like:
The Pea: I would go on a Disney Cruise with my mom and dad. I might let my brothers come along, maybe.
Jammy: I would take everyone in my family to Hawaii and stay in a hotel. I'd do relaxing things like lie on the sand, search for shells, let the tide wash over my feet, and go surfing.
3Po: The whole family would go to Great America and ride all the roller coasters with corkscrews, then we'd fly to Ecuador and go exploring.
3Po's answer (the Ecuador part, not the roller coaster part!) got me thinking, What the heck, it's a fantasy, so I might as well fantasize big. I'd love to go on an African safari. I've seen so much footage of how beautiful and unspoiled the African countryside is, and I'd really love to see it. Usually when we go on vacation I plan for it months ahead, looking for all the cheapest options, all the free attractions and all the ways we could save money and still have a great time -- but since this is my Ultimate Family Vacation, I'm throwing a budget to the winds. This trip would be a luxury safari, complete with gourmet cooked-to-order meals, candlelight and silverware, and crisp white tents with those wispy white mosquito nets draped over our beds. I want to see green forests and mist-covered hills, golden grasslands and sandy deserts. I want to see lions and tigers and elephants and cranes and silver-backed gorillas running in the wild, not caged in a zoo. I want to explore colorful marketplaces with little treasures and interesting people. Most of all, I want to take the kids to visit Helina, a little girl in Ethiopia whose education we are sponsoring, so we can meet her parents, get to know them, take them out for dinner and an ice-cream, and shower her and her classmates with presents.
It might not be in the same league as Mickey Mouse, Hawaii or Ecuador, but that's my Ultimate Family Vacation -- something so completely removed from my day to day existence, and so completely out of my comfort zone that going there would truly be a once-in-a-lifetime journey. Hey, I can dream, can't I?
